Ok, got back into the show - again - after giving up on episode 2. Now on episode 6 and loving it a lot more.

Re: Does Breaking Bad ever get good?

I read an interesting article on the show's creator today. He said the idea for the show just popped in his head, but after weeks of working on a pitch, he was devastated when one exec said it was the same idea as Showtime's "Weeds". Suburban parent gets in the drug biz to support the family. He wasn't aware of the show. But the network felt a show about crystal meth would be different enough.

He said if he knew about Weeds before the pitch, he would have given up on the idea.

I don't understand how this people can be in show biz and not know what the show "Weeds" is??? Too funny. Glad it worked ou the way it did.

Gotta consider when he was probably pitching the show... Weeds started in '05, he probably pitched Breaking Bad in '06 or '07 considering it started in '08. I can see not being current on every new show out there. For some reason it takes an extremely long time for the first season of some shows to come out, not sure when BB was initially pitched but a good example is Game of Thrones, which was first publicly announced in January 2007 with a 2011 start date.

With that said, Weeds had 2 good seasons and has gotten worse as its gone. Breaking Bad has had 4 great seasons and gotten stronger with each one.

I'll ask this here, since it's the most appropriate place.

I just read that cellist Zoe Keating did a cello version of the Breaking Bad theme that appears somewhere in Season 2. No idea which episode, though. Does anyone here remember hearing it?

edit: she just posted the info on twitter. Season 3 Episode 6.

Speaking of similar ideas for shows, for HBO, David Milch wanted to do a show about Rome, but was told that a Rome show was already in pre-production. So he came up with Deadwood instead. Deadwood premiered well over a year before Rome (makes sense though since it probably involved an insane amount of research and pre-production).

I'm like 6 episodes into season 2 of Breaking Bad and I'm still not loving it. I just don't like any of the characters. Walt is boring. Jesse is annoying as fucking. Both women are ****s. Only the brother in law is remotely likable.

Then you should just stop watching, if your not in to it by now(and you should be) just stop, and move on to another show.

Someone who finds fucking annoying has bigger problems than disliking Breaking Bad.

I'm watching this show for the first time, and I'm on season 4, episode 4. Loving every minute of it, this is a fantastic show. Bryan Cranston deserves every accolade he gets for his work. Wow.

I also recently saw a great Weird Al Yankovic tweet: "I enjoy Breaking Bad so much more when I imagine it as a prequel to Malcolm In The Middle."

Finished season two. Great stuff, though the ending was quite a bit different than I was expecting it to be. I've heard season three is the slowest, so I'm a little wary of that, but still enjoying it so far.

It may start out a bit slow, but it gets really good.

Re: Does Breaking Bad ever get good?

I've seen every episode of the show so far, and while I like it quite a bit, it does pale in comparison to the HBO greats imo (specifically The Sopranos and The Wire). It's a good show no question, but I'm finding Walt's evolution into 'the ultimate badass' a bit too linear and forced, especially given that's it only been a year since the show started.

I don't think any show will pass The Sopranos for me though.

Re: Does Breaking Bad ever get good?

BB has a chance to do something the Sopranos couldn't - end strong.

I'll give you the first two seasons of the Sopranos is better than almost any other series I've seen, but they started fading gradually from there. The Wire was awesome and ended well but not on a home run IMO.

BB has a chance to really nail it, and if it does, it will definitely go down as one of the best series ever. it's only gotten better season after season instead of starting strong and petering out.

Re: Does Breaking Bad ever get good?

The Sopranos had a better ending than The Wire's, which was just safe and predictable. I'll agree that the first 3 seasons are the strongest, but 6 is up there too. They stumbled a bit with 4 and 5, but they're still great in their own rights.

Re: Does Breaking Bad ever get good?

I love Breaking Bad but the writing on the show, while amped up and intriguing, just does not have the quality and nuance of a Mad Men, Sopranos, Deadwood or Six Feet Under.

BB's writing style is out-there, extreme and relies on a lot of suspension of disbelief and easy outs. Love every minute of the show, though.

Re: Does Breaking Bad ever get good?

I think Sopranos S6 could have been better if it wasn't split into 20 episodes, which is precisely why I am worried about BB continuing to expand. Did we really need a multi-episode arc about
Spoiler:
Vito being gay
?

Oh, and I vote for changing the thread title to "Is Breaking Bad ever not good?".

I don't think the Vito arc was that bad, maybe not the most interesting but not terrible. The one arc that really stuck out to me as boring was the Furio/Carmela storyline, mostly because I didn't ever like it when Carmela was in the spotlight, but also because the writers transformed Furio from a mysterious badass to a lovestruck pansy in the blink of an eye. By the time he was written out of the series I didn't even miss him.

Keep in mind that much of the storyline of later seasons had to be rewritten because of Nancy Marchand's death,
Spoiler:
and Steve Buscemi's character wasn't originally supposed to die at the end of season 5, but he had other obligations

which impacted the direction the series took.

Re: Does Breaking Bad ever get good?

I would be that guy...

Don't talk about other shows please. I have Sopranos in my "to-do list" and now I know that
Spoiler:
"Vito is gay".
I don't even know who he is, but when I watch the show, that's the only thing I will think about.

I still see Breaking Bad as something of a comic book series. The show isn't anchored in reality, but isn't so overthetop it's distracting. It's just fun.
