Just trying to refresh my memory here - is Sherlock likely to be edited for time on PBS? I seem to recall some discussion in the past about PBS not having the full episodes. I'll be buying the Blu-ray either way and I'm trying to decide if I should just wait until then to watch it.

I was going to buy this at Vudu, but they're charging $14.99.

I don't know, this one was a little too self-aware for me. It was still a fun romp but not the best of the series.

I guess I watched this too late.
Is there a write up that breaks it down? I guess I don't see what over an hour in his mind palace convinced or proved to himself that M is truly dead (other than the obvious of him shooting himself right in front of Sherlock.)

For the series? Not at all. Season 4 starts filming in April for a 2017 premiere. And I read but forgot where that both Cumberbatch and Freeman have signed for a Season 5. Which I guess we'll see sometime 2018 or 2019.
PBS is showing it again Saturday, January 9th if you are inclined to watch it from the beginning.

As a bonus the PBS airing included a non-stop Downton Abbey screen bug as well as frequent animated Downton Abbey ads that blocked whole portions of the on-screen action. Now I need to track down a clean copy to actually watch.

I felt that way about the first hour (every series has that episode where they decide to have "fun" do an "alternate reality" where the actors play different roles that comment on their usual roles), but I felt as the twist(s) played out it took on more gravity and became a fulfilling episode.

"That would take weeks, even with my resources."
"Got it!"

I kind of would've rather they just did this as a straight one-off Victorian-era episode, trying to tie it into the overall series with all of the Inception stuff got to be a little much. So what about the body of the Bride's lookalike? Did he find it or not? I suppose that'll tie in to what they reveal that Moriarty is planning to do next. I imagine that we'll find out Moran is behind it in some fashion. The feminist message was worthwhile, but the way it was presented felt like an after-school-special. I think this outing bit off a little more than it could chew. And I have no clue what that final shot was poised to be about
? Was it just supposed to be a neat trick to remind us that he's the same character in every era?

Re: Sherlock (BBC/PBS) Series Thread
*** Spoilers abound ***
The reviews I've read so far (especially the ones from the UK) agree with you. I'm kind of glad Moffat put in the Inception stuff to at the very least explain why we were getting a Victorian Holmes adventure. I have to admit that the dream-within-a-dream stuff and the questions about what is real and what's a dream did require more mental gymnastics than my brain was able to perform. Still, I thought it was rather clever that the story left open the possibility that it is the modern Holmes that's the 'conjecture' of the Victorian one--a nice out for hardcore traditionalists (like my wife) who can't accept Sherlock Holmes existing in the 21st century.
I didn't get that part at all. Why was Holmes so convinced that the lookalike would be buried underneath the real one? And how were he and the others so sure the coffin they dug up actually contained the real Emilia Ricoletti? I guess it doesn't really matter in the end since this sequence was just part of Holmes's drug-induced fantasy...which is the big problem with much of what happens in this story.
It's either that (which I suspect is what they were going for since Holmes says the 'man out of time' bit just before that final shot), or it's that thing I mentioned above about Victorian Holmes imagining what it'd be like for him to live in the future.

Good grief. In the very first shot the episode told you it was a drug induced vision. And then it was reiterated twice in the next ten minutes!

Funnily enough, the online reviews I've read make no mention about the episode giving the game away from the start, so I guess a whole bunch of people were in the same boat as I was and didn't see the first 10-15 minutes. That must be it, right?

Didn't really like the episode as a while, but did like pieces of it. Much too self aware. But I do like Groucho's theory above.

Hey, did you watch the episode on TV? Because I was nowhere near a television set on Friday and had to monkey with the PBS site to get their live feed working. And guess what? I couldn't get it to work until almost 15 minutes into the show, so I had no blessed idea about any references to a drug-induced vision in the first ten minutes.
