re: MasterChef (FOX) -- Gordon Ramsey -- Series Thread
Ugg...
I am not sure I like the premise of this show, where an obviously VERY talented individual can be eliminated before ones of obviously less talent.
While I do not really like Sharone (? - Whatever his name was), he was obviously better than that Indian girl.
But, at least the 3 food critics were honest in their opinions of the food.
Oh... And I guess they are all given recipes and instructions for preparing these dishes. The young girl was studying/reading something during that soufflé comp.

Gordon demo'd how to prepare the souffle before they had to make it. That wouldn't be the case when they have to come up with their own dishes.

True, however that's the nature of competition ... unlike, say, Hell's Kitchen where Gordon just pitches whoever he wants.

The previews lead me to believe that there would be more instruction too. I thought it would be taking true armature chefs, teaching a lesson, and then eliminating them based on how well they executed that lesson. This is more like Top Chef (though not as good and with more manufactured drama).
Don't get me wrong, I like the show and I am very surprised at the fact the competition seems real. Contestants who were "personalities", had heart warming stories, or added drama were being sent home left and right, based only (it seems) on the quality of their last dish. Something even Top Chef can't claim lately (IMO).

I think I'm done with this fake BS show. Whitney's voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Seriously, she is dumber than a box of rocks. Anyone find it convenient that there were two desert challenges in the show when everyone knows Whitney's strength is baking? Sharone was easily the best chef in the competition, but he gets kicked out for a baking challenge? He was the one who won the most challenges and consistently had the best dishes. More fake Faux drama I suppose. Fox loves young girls and underdog victories. Watch Whitney win this scripted garbage.

Sharone didn't get kicked out solely on the souffle challenge. He was also kicked out because he had one of the two worst fish dishes -- something that never would have happened if he really were easily the best chef in the competition.

Others have made multiple mistakes that should have gotten them kicked out, but they got to stay. What about Sheetal and her nonexistent desert? She is still in the competition despite her several mistakes. Sharone cooks one bad dish and he is out of the competition? Doesn't sound very fair to me.

Sharone was almost as much of a douche as Ben from last seasons Hells Kitchen. Both think they are better than everybody else, and wont stop talking about it. Even after the "experts" tell them they arent as good as the others.

Sheetal's non existant dessert was one bad thing, and it got her into the bottom three if I remember correctly. But someone else was worse. This is a round to round competition. Everyone gets a fresh slate so to speak, for the next round. IE someone can go from bottom three to top two and there is no penalty for being in the bottom three last round. They are judged on THIS dish, and THIS dish alone. Sharones fish dish sucked. He got 4 out of 12. That means that two of the critics gave him 1s. His souffle was soup. Undercooked. He fucked up two dishes in a row at a time when that got him booted from the show. Sucks for him.

You have to remember, this is not Hell Kitchen where you could get booted off if you made string of mistakes.
jjcool have said pretty much spot on. Sharone fucked up on fish dish - trying to service fish liver to critics isn't a smart move. If he didnt add fish liver on his plate, he probably wouldnt be on sudden death. It was unfortunately for him

Well with Sharone gone, the next most talented chef is Lee. Hope he wins. I just know we will get some typical Faux BS ending where the underdog ends up winning though. Sigh.

I hope the recipe for the buttermilk pan-fried chicken with creamed collared greens is in the book. Seemed easy to make.

Meh.
Lee should have moved onto the finals... that was BS. He had the most appetizing looking entrees. I mean cmon, Whitney's cheesecake was barely a cheesecake... it was whipped cream!
I know I'll have fun debating this tomorrow with the cooks at work though.

I think that Whitney won because she had the most potential.
From what was shown, it was clear that the other guy was more sophisticated in terms of cooking technique. His palette was also pretty good. But I think it's equally clear that Whitney, although young, is a phenom and will grow by leaps and bounds as she gets more culinary experience. You can't teach genius.

I just watched the finale and it wasn't really "shocking" that Whitney won. I didn't like David Miller and that raised eyebrow thing he always did so I'm okay with her winning.
I think I'm gonna miss the show between now and next summer though since I love the over-the-topness, and the deep breaths and looking up in the sky each person did after a challenge is over or while waiting to hear the results of what the judges thought of their dish.
Bring on season two!
