That may have been the funniest foot chase in L&O history. Shaw looked like he was out of breath as soon as he started running and Cosgrove looks like he’s speed walking

Hey...
Not a bad episode at all. The "ripped from the headlines" aspect was still there of course, but wasn't the main focus of the story. Nor was there any extra preaching. The finale in the subway car seemed a little much, but I'll give them artistic license.
I was also wrong in what I was predicting. I thought the legal issue would be

Stop the presses! A Law and Order episode with no preaching, no attempt at relevance of current news events, I don't even think it was based on a similar real-life story. Not to mention a little moral dilemma in that they knew they had the right guy but used illegal means to get him. Not that I like that, but I think we all know it happens a lot and that's one of the things John Oliver was complaining about.
But why do they keep showing Cosgrove's kid? I got a feeling she'll be a crime victim before the end of the season.

I'm wondering if the necklace shouldn't have been thrown out too. What put the cops on to him was his being in the same city as the other murders. Once the trial judge threw that out, what did they use as probable cause to get the search warrant for the building where the necklace was found. They had nothing to tell a judge why they believe evidence of a crime would be found there. You would think they would have to find a completely new reason to suspect him to get the search warrant.

Re: Law & Order -- Series Discussion Thread
The message was, it's wrong to plant evidence even when you know the person did it. A lot of people would be ok with it. As a viewer you should want him acquitted, not convicted. The jury didn't see the smoking gun evidence the viewer did. He was convicted on the necklace and nothing else. Just tell the jury we found the necklace in his possession and the jury automatically convicts. Under the premise of the episode you could plant the evidence on any random person and convict them. No other evidence needed. That's scary. If cops just wanted anybody convicted to solve the case, they could just pick a name out of the phone book.
But as for the part of your statement I bolded, that's what I was referring to as a "moral dilemma". Of course you don't want police planting evidence. But at the same time, this was definitely the guy who did it. I don't want a corrupt police force, no one does, but I also don't want murderers going free, ya know? And that's why it was a moral dilemma, and that makes for good drama. Something that's been sorely lacking since L&O came back

I know the show is still basically split down the middle between the two sections but for some reason I still feel like the police sections are much shorter since coming back. Anyone else notice or feel the same? I know the police parts are still basically half the show’s run time but it feels off to me.

I've noticed that since Mechad Brooks joined the show almost every week features a foot race, with Brooks chasing and taking down the runner. The latest episode changed it up slightly, with Jeffrey Donovan cuffing the perp. I've started to wait for this, if you know what I mean. The previous episode surprised me at first, because the suspect allowed himself to be cuffed. But then there was a second (younger) suspect later in the episode, and he ran.

I still watch it because there’s not much else to watch on Thursday now that football is done, but this cast stinks.

I've started to watch older seasons I hadn't seen before. I'm now in season 14, the last one with Jerry Orbach. I had a big gap between season 6 and 17. The show was definitely better with Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterston leading the cast, although I liked Linus Roache as ADA Cutter.

Did Kelli Giddish want out? Or did SVU dump her?
This new L&O needs stability, but that comes over time that they don't have. Amanda Rollins moving to homicide investigations and being the lead on this series would have been a good idea. A new setting with a new partner, but someone the audience is comfortable with from episode one.

Giddish was let go or quit depending on your view of low ball offers - basically contract negotiations didn't go well. Donovan seems like he doesn't like the character.

Re: Law & Order -- Series Discussion Thread
If articles are to be trusted, Kelli left mostly due to contract negotiations not going well. Not directly due to what she or the show-runner wanted.

Re: Law & Order -- Series Discussion Thread
Well, then that would have been a win-win. Universal didn't want to give her more money on a show with dwindling returns that really just depends on Hargitay to stay. But she could have stepped up in status and helped launch the new L&O series instead of dragging Anthony Anderson back for just one season.
