Can someone post a summary of McCoy's Third Man speech? I was watching it and the audio went on the HDTV channel that I was watching so I missed some chunks of it.
I liked the episode, and thought that the sentence was overkill as well. There was a similar case in the news in the past couple of weeks in China where a man sold fake formula, and a couple of babies died from malnutrition. This was in addition to the fake vaccines from a while back as well.

I have no problem with the consecutive sentences. He deserves to be in prison for life. I was surprised McCoy never brought up "depraved indifference" which he likes so much.
One of the better episodes of the season (but still way short of SVU). And
to the new ADA.

"Do you know, I don't ever feel comfortable on these sort of things... Victims?" Lime asks Martins pointing to the people walking around beneath them, "Would you feel any pity if one of those dots stopped moving forever?"
At that point you can see that the defendent finally realized that what he did had consequences and that he was only concerned about the money and not the ramifications of his greed.
Good twist.
I've never seen "The Third Man", but I want to now. Thank heavens its on DVD (Criterion no less).

I don't know much about law but it still seems a little harsh. 15 years is too little but 240 years seems too much. Isn't there a happy medium. I know a lot about the flu vaccine though and you can still get the flu even if you get the shot. It is not %100 effective. How did the kid die anyways? People with access to good healthcare rarely die from the flu without some kind of underlying disease or risk factor.
BTW if you haven't yet get a flu shot. Especially if you have any risk factors. They are available now and in danger of being thrown away for not being used. This is a much milder season but will probably increase in Feb.

Good episode too, although the judge allowing McCoy's speech comparing the defendant to Orson Wells in The Third Man was laughably ridiculous.

Speaking of Det. Fontana, I've resumed my watching of Crime Story S1 on DVD. It is too bad that the eras aren't closer so they could have used the same characters. I think Lt. Torrello would have made a great L&O character.

if anyone cares, they were correct on NY law regarding using deadly force to prevent the escape of a person who has committed murder

4. A private person acting on his own account may use physical force,
other than deadly physical force, upon another person when and to the
extent that he reasonably believes such to be necessary to effect an
arrest or to prevent the escape from custody of a person whom he
reasonably believes to have committed an offense and who in fact has
committed such offense; and he may use deadly physical force for such
purpose when he reasonably believes such to be necessary to:
(a) Defend himself or a third person from what he reasonably believes
to be the use or imminent use of deadly physical force; or
(b) Effect the arrest of a person who has committed murder,
manslaughter in the first degree, robbery, forcible rape or forcible
sodomy and who is in immediate flight therefrom.

That was a good one. I don't recall L&O addressing the citizen's arrest before (sort of came close when they had the bounty hunter case several years ago). Heavy on the law, and I was pretty certain they had the actual law correct (as they usually do). Of course, as McCoy argued that law doesn't give the citizen pursuing the suspect carte blanche to effect said arrest; just like a police officer couldn't do the same. They would be held to same reckless or gross negligence standard. I don't see a jury letting someone like this off (best would be a hung jury), but hey, its L&O.
The confict btwn Van Buren and Fontana and McCoy and Borgia were all well-played too.

I wasn't really paying close attention during that episode.
I was waiting for Alexandra to say she was a lesbian when Jack told her she might want to leave the DA's office if she didn't agree with him

Did they miss a scene last night? Like the one where they first talk to the suspect (stoller?)? I watched the episode with my girlfriend twice last night and we didn't see that guy Stoller until they got him in the interrogation room. In fact the first time I heard his name was when Fontana and his partner were walking out of the hospital room and into the elevator and they mentioned that he lied. Totally threw us off cause we spent the rest of the show trying to figure out where he came from.
On another note....is it me or do the female leads just keep getting worse and worse. I refuse to believe that L&O can't find a better actor than Borgia.

I think she's fine. Of course, given what preceded her, my frame of reference may be all out of whack.

Anyone remember any info on the actual incident this was based on, I wanna search for it and can't remember any details at all. I only remember vaguely what really happened.

So the hunting massacre part was ripped from the headlines; not the reckless citizen's arrest?
If so, that is consistent with my L&O 'ripped from the headlines' theory - when they tangentially rip from the headlines, the plots are generally well done. When they borrow quite liberally from real life, that's where they run into problems.

edit again: found his name searching another forum I occasionally go to
Chai Soua Vang. googling his name should get lots of stuff
