Or better yet, the US government chases them off, shoots at the ships, etc. After all, do you know how massively disrupting an alien presence arriving on Earth would be? Almost every major religion teaches that God created life ONLY on Earth. The arrival of the Galactica would cause chaos. Better to chase them off and keep us blissfully unaware.

I think I figured out a major spoiler about the cylons. Of course I could be totally late on this (I don't read spoilers myself), but...

Spoiler:
the cylons are ANGELS! Think about it... they have no souls... they have no free will... they're talking about the "one true God"...

Which leads me to believe that Baltar is maybe not "Jesus", but Adam.
