I believe that was a part of the hallucination. Plus, it was a tree.

Does anybody know what Locke's first name is? On yesterday episode, I heard Jack say "Sean" and then when Jack was talking to Charlie, Charlie calls him "John" like the philosopher. I don't think this is important but it just bugged for some reason.

Cleaver,

The first time Hurley went up to Jin, Jin basically told him that he didn't want to have anything to do with him.

On the sea urchin incident, I think the only words that Jin say to him in Korean is to eat the "mussel" or "oyster".
It wasn't anything important and his body language more or less convey his character feelings.

John. It was mentioned in a previous episode. Jack called him John, not Sean.

Substantially better episode than the previous week. As far as this episode is concerned, the fake out didn't particularly trick/bother me. It seemed an interesting and logical way to flesh out and progress Boone as a character. I'm of the belief that Boone's flashbacks while in his fugue like vision quest were genuine. On this specific point, does anyone believe that Sawyer was perhaps with Jack's father that particular night? Sawyer yells something out at the police station about "his bottle". We'll just have to wait and see how this plays out I suppose.

As for those deriding the "fake death" ratio, I believe Lindelof/Abrams and the writers know exactly what they're doing in this respect, and when a major character is killed off, it will be entirely justified and done with a clear purpose in mind.

Also looking forward to Shannon's flashback episode. Although this was technically Boone's, it's clear she's got some interesting issues playing out in her own life that we'll all soon be privy to. I also wonder if her penchant for choosing disastrous men to have relashonships with (Ex-husband) is due more to her feelings for Boone rather than the money angle as portrayed here.

Jin hasn't learned a single monosyllabic f****ing word of English yet??? Who's he kidding...

Bullshit officially called.

The post is under review.

I guess this means you were snookered. Like others said, it just didn't feel right; Boone getting knocked out, the voice coming from different directions, and Locke being able to go back to the beach, abduct her in daylight, and then bring her all the way back there. Plus as someone who watched Dallas in the 80s (a whole season of deception), I don't always take things at face value, particularly on a show like this.

I'm not so sure Boone slept with Shannon. In my experience women have been the most pissed off at me when i have decided not to sleep with them. After the crash it seemed that shannon was pissed off at boone. Shannon was definitely the initiated the encounter but boone might not have done it or rather her. Boone is one of my favorate characters on the show. unlike locke who knows everything, the doc, even sawyer and kate. boone has no idea what the hell he is doing. like the rest of us who have grown up in society would be. but he is smart enough to learn from locke. if i was on that island i would be attached to locke's hip too. he is the key to survival on the island. he has the knowledge. shannon is annoying but hot so it was cool they didn't kill her off. if you didn't know that scene was a fever dream sequence then you havn't watched enough tv. and god bless you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Jin said "NO!" quite clearly when Hurley was telling him to piss on his foot. So I guess he does know at least one word

LOL, I can't recall if he did or not, but I would hope that he at least has that word at his disposal.

I'm betting Jin knows English fine but is just pretending to not know. He is in the mafia and it would be useful to him to understand another language.

I'm curious to find out what exactly is the deal with the compass and how the island is affecting it. Could it be because is too close to the equator?

Was that when Hurley came close to groping Jin to try to explain? If so, the "no!" could be in response to that....

We don't know that he's in the mafia for sure. It only has been hinted on Jin and Sun flashback that Jin works for Sun's father and that he resorts to beating up people/using violence for her father.

Supposedly, a Jin flashback will be coming soon and may help to clarify what exactly he was doing for Sun's father.

My thoughts:

1) The compass never worked right, and Locke gave it to Sayid knowing this. Locke clearly doesn't see a need to find a way off of the island.

2) There is something on/in the island that generates a magnetic field. Maybe that is why the plane crashed there - it was pulled out of the sky. Maybe some device that can be turned on and generate a lot of pull, but when off, has enough risidual magnetism to affect a compass, but not other metallic objects.

speaking of whacked out ratios of scenes (spoilers from next week's preview):

Spoiler:
Yet another scene of Sawyer having something that one of the "good guys" needs.

"Give it back Sawyer."
"Why should I?"
"Because blah blah blah."
"No."
"Give it back because I said so."
"Okay, fine. (insert smartass comment)"

"Lost" continued its strong run at 8 p.m. with a 12.6/19, far outpacing "60 Minutes," 7.3/11, on CBS. "The SI Swimsuit Model Search" was third for NBC, beating "That '70s Show," 4.0/6, and "Quintuplets," 3.3/5, on FOX. UPN's "Road to Stardom with Missy Elliott" was fifth at 2.2/3. The WB trailed with a rerun of "Smallville."

Strange that both the OC and Lost have subplots this season about stepchildren getting together.

Interesting episode but it gave me more questions than answers.

I wonder what's in Michael's box

Yes, and it's also very interesting that we've seen Locke use their weaknesses to gain their loyalty. Charlie's heroin addiction, and Boone's feelings for his sister.

Also notice that he's been driving a wedge between Michael and Walt... again, preying on a weakness.

So if he's going to use Shannon to get to Sayid, then we've already seen that Sayid feels guilt/regret over his female friend...

I remember in early interviews/comments that Locke was often compared to Randall Flagg. (In "The Stand," the demonic Flagg also preyed upon the weaknesses of his followers in order to gain their loyalty.)

And this episode, we also saw Jack seemingly growing suspicious of Locke's motives. He doesn't seem to trust him.

If the islanders are breaking down into two camps, it's starting to look like this:

JACK: Kate, Sayid, Michael, Sun

LOCKE: Charlie, Boone, Walt, Shannon(?), Jin(? there's a wedge waiting to be driven between him and his wife), Sayid(?)

and where would Sawyer fall? My gut instinct says in the Jack/Kate camp. He seems to be set up to achieve some form of redemption.

Also, seeing Locke whack Boone over the head makes me wonder if he wasn't the one who clocked Sayid a few episodes back.

Ryan and Lindsay are not 'step-siblings.' She would be his pseudo-aunt.

OK, this mat be nothing, or it may be a weird "clue" - Boones struggling to free himself from the ropes resulted in noticable marks on his neck. But, those marks were absent in the end when he went after Locke. Does that mean that his being tied up was also part of his hallucination? Boone did comment on Locke putting the salve on him, which happened when Boone was tied up. So, were the marks only in Boone's dream, and he had actually gotten free of the ropes without injuring his neck? OR did the make-up person on the show screw up?? Or is this a clue??

Hurley is great! Can't wait for his backstory. When he was talking to Jin and asked if Jin could speak English, he added something to the effect "there are rumors that you can" - I immediately assumed that he was refering to us loyal followers of the show who post comments about such things.

I think that Hurley and Jin are going to become good buddies now. I would like to see it, since it would be pretty funny.
