Does anyone know if this F&G set has the "Grateful Dead" episode? It didn't air when NBC was carrying the show. The episode involves the guidance counselor lending the main character a copy of "American Beauty" record. She ends of getting coerced by her hippy friends to go on tour with the Dead instead of going to summer camp.
It does. The DVD set has all the episodes that were produced.

I did that, too. My wife wasn't happy about it - "You haven't even seen the show, that's probably wasted money" (actually, I had seen a couple episodes). She watched a few of the episodes with me and later apologized.

The Halloween episode is one of the funniest hours of TV ever made.

Great stuff, I should go through my set again, haven't watched it in awhile. I love the yearbook, best packaging ever... but i have to keep it on my bookshelf... no room for it anywhere else.

It is a great show. Our library has it, and I'm on disc 6 now. I'm kinda sad that I'll be through watching it soon. One thing that I noticed, though, was when Bill was watching the Dinah Shore show, Gary Shandling was on it, and his teeth were horrible!!! I had no idea. No wonder they look so good now (and have for as long as I remember him seeing him).

I love the soundtrack. Sorta b-sides like "Gonna Raise Hell." It was good to hear Kiss' "Do you love me" rather than the obvious "Detroit Rock City." Nice touch...I have not seen the Grateful Dead show yet.

The last time I cried watching a TV show was when the pilot aired. That was an amazing start to a series.

Thanks for the heads up. I have been in the TV dvd club(now discontinued) but still haven't finished my fulfillment requirements.

For anyone who has this in their backlog and has yet to seen an episode, I'd suggest just going for it. The episodes are so good and packed from beginning to end that you'll knock off a good chunk of the set in one sitting.

Series like this make me utterly angry at the feeble minded morans at the networks. This show along with Undeclared are two series that definitely got the shaft from the no-nothing suits at the networks.

Great show. Every time I watched it, it felt like a semi-autobiographical portrait from different points of my life from the same time period. I strongly identified with Sam Weir and hung out with someone exactly like Bill Haverchuck. I valued the show so much that I bought that yearbook fan edition instead of the regular version.

NBC never gave it a fair chance and dicked around too much with putting it on random timeslots. Whether the show sank because of that or people couldn't relate to it, preferring the more romanticized and unrealistic version of high school (a la "Beverly Hills, 90210"), this was one show that should have lasted a bit longer. But had it not been cancalled, it's unlikely we would have been given the deluxe DVD treatment as it is.

Just curious here, but...how long do you guys think this show could've lasted...like, what would've happened after two or so years when the Freaks graduated high school? What about when the geeks graduated in three years...Or when the geeks go through puberty after two seasons and have deeper voices and get bigger?

I love the show, but I wonder how long of a run it could've had on television...

I thought the show was superb and could have lasted for several years until everyone graduated.

Of course, I also think a sitcom about the geeks during or after college would have been hilarious especially since Neal and Sam would have probably still looked like kids.

Like I said I haven't seen this yet, but in real life there are Freaks and Geeks of all ages. It isn't just relegated to high school.

My point was just that I don't know if they could've moved the show out of the high school realm--where everyone is self conscious and people get insulted on a daily basis and just overall a place that can be uncomfortable for some--and still have the show work as well as it did in 2000.

I think it would have been interesting, after a few years, to go back and forth between Lindsey in College and Sam finishing up high school.

I did the same thing. Greatest TV show behind Buffy as well as greatest limited edition set. I'm so glad they got the original songs on the DVD's.

I did that, too, though I ended up selling the $45 version to someone else (it was a blind buy for him, too). And I still haven't gotten around to seeing "Discos and Dragons".

I received the Freaks and Geeks DVD set as a gift recently and what an incredible surprise this was. I'm sad I wasn't there for the show when they really needed me. Before the network suits decided to yank it I could have been one of those letters sent to save this amazing show.

It simply is one the greatest TV shows ever. I knew there was a lot of hype surrounding this show but nothing prepared me for what I was about to watch. The writing, characters, situations, and humour all transcended the usual TV cliches and slick characters we see on TV. And damn is this show funny as hell. And its no wonder why most people who see Freaks and Geeks have so much affection for all the characters. No matter where you were in the High School food chain I think everyone can identify with every character in the show; not just the freaks and geeks but the smart or popular kids as well. Its simply the most realistic and funniest show I've seen. TV or on the Big Screen.

Its too bad mediocre movies like Dodgeball, School of Rock, and Napoleon Dynamite that has elements from Freaks and Geeks get all the glory. I don't think I could recommend any other DVD this year to anyone until everyone sees Freaks and Geeks.

well I just finished the last episode....and i'm sad.

I don't think i've ever been truly angry like I am now at the asshats of NBC that canned this utter masterpiece of television. what a travesty. With this kind of writing, characterization, and acting, it could still be on today, I have no doubt about that at all. simply amazing stuff. I know I saw a few episodes when it originally aired, but it seemed like it was on a different night every other week, and then gone for weeks at a time, and then back again at a different time. How on earth they could cancel it after never giving it a fair shake is mind boggling. stupid fucks.

I was thinking about ordering already, but damn. Even if I could sell mine for $45, that is $75 more for 2 bonus discs of features, and some fancy packaging. I would bite for around $80, but $120 is outrageous for what you get.

I just started watching it this week. Finished about 10 episodes. Brilliant. Not much to add to what has already been said. I do have a couple small critiques but they are minor.

1. Other than the pilot, Sam and Lindsey have barely interacted at all. They had a great scene after Lindsey broke up with Nick at the dinner table around the 9th episode, but most of their scenes are in passing or throwaway scenes, like at the dinner table with mom and dad.

2. Timing - for some reason they have this 24 time lapse thing going on. They will show Lindsey at home, or out, then the next scene is Sam at school or vice versa. It has happened a couple of times. Very weird.

3. Breaking the rules - for a show that is very unique and breaks all the usual cliches, the second episode we get the very cliche, parents are out of town, lets throw a party, scenario. Then the whole shcool shows up. Very original. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, but very cliche.

I haven't watched the entire series yet, in fact, I'm still on disk 1 [trying to make it last], but regarding your complaint #1, I see that as accuracy. Both Lindsay and Sam are going through lots of changes, and HS is stressful enough as it is--I think more siblings of that age would have 'separate lives', at least in HS, than not.

2. I have noticed that as well.....call it poetic license or something . I recall somewhere, maybe in the yearbook, Judd is asked "Why are the kids trick or treating in broad daylight?" and the answer is that since they're kids, they have limited time to film, and didn't want to film outside at night or something.

3. This is true, of course, but while the show does break a lot of cliches [imho, more with the accuracy and lifelikeness of the characters, than a lot of the plots], there are certain things that pretty much *everyone* who went to HS knows about and dealt with, so of course there are going to be some things which could be called 'cliches', or could be called 'representative of real life.' Hence the universality of the show. I don't see that as an inherent flaw. Geek desiring popular girl; freaks acting out through their freakiness even though they do have some positive things to contribute; unsure girl trying to determine where she fits in; etc. They're all cliches, but the difference is, F&G does them so well.

Your Freaks & Geeks story

I was just looking through the "what tv shows do you own on DVD" thread, and I noticed a lot of people owned Freaks & Geeks. I was just wondering how you came to purchase/watch one of the best shows to ever air on tv (in my 19 years of existence at least)? Did you catch it on tv a while back? Blind buy it based on word of mouth? Etc, etc.

I personally watched the few episodes that aired on nbc back when I was in jr. high. It was then cancelled when I was in 8th grade and I was praying for a dvd release. I signed the petition for everyone in my family. FINALLY, sometime during my senior year of hs, I read that it was being released. I couldn't afford the limited edition set being sold through the F&G site, but I do remember going straight from school the tuesday it was released and snatching it up. I then proceeded to watch it all over again and really wished it hadn't have been cancelled. I was very saddened that this show wasn't on during my freshman yr of hs, which I HATED. I was, however, extremely happy that it was finally released (better late than never), and I began to show it to my friends, who ended up loving it even more. I even compared the pilot episode to Paul Feig's book "Kick Me" ad showed the entire pilot episode to my english class senior yr. And I continued showing people F&G during my freshman yr of college. To me, it is one of the most relatable shows, and definitely one that I can watch over, and over again without losing any of it's quality or personality.

Ok, sorry that was SO long. So what's your story?

I don't think I ever watched it on NBC, mainly because they put it on Friday night. It's not like I'm never home on a Friday night, but more that Friday night tv usually sucks. Someone at work was raving about it being their favorite show, but it was close to the end. I might've caught one episode before it was gone.

I made sure to watch Undeclared when it started and I loved that show. The first real chance I got to watch Freaks and Geeks was when The Family Channel reran it. I just set my Replay to record it whenever it could find it because they were running it something like every other weekend at midnight. I think I saw about half of the episodes. They didn't even end up showing all of them
