The Wire on HBO --- Discussion Thread

So is this show just not finding a fan base? Project green light and Sex both have threads, this show seems to get the shaft a bit.
I was suprised to see it start at 9:30 last night. I only watched the first few minutes (we have a 2 week old and we are on her schedule now) but it looked like another good episode. I wish HBO had held off on the premier and ran the show in the same time slot, they are using Fox tactics to loose viewers, I don't recall anything about a time change.
At any rate I'll post my thoughts on the rest of the episode tomorrow but I hope others are giving the show a chance. I don't think thoses of us that hung in last season were disapointed and I don't think I will be this year either.

During the first season a lot of people professed how much they loved this show, yet there wasn't a huge thread about it each week. I've also noticed that at least 75% of the threads about tv shows on DVDtalk are all nitpicking and complaining about said show. Makes me wonder if people just don't have anything to complain about when it comes to "The Wire".

Yeah, I don't know what to post about it except that it kicked ass ... again. I liked this show from the beginning, and yet I still fall more in love with it with each new episode. The interaction between the detectives is hysterical.

I like this second season better than the first. I like how they put the team back togehter this episode. It should get even better now. Can't wait to see how the D and Avon plot is going to develop.

Yeah this show is great. I watch it every week, but don't really have much to say about it. It's well written, with great acting, and I can't wait until next week. Is the 9:30 time change permanent, or will Project Greenlight go in after sex and the city to bump it back to 10?

I believe the first season of "The Wire" didn't get alot of attention here until it was almost over. Since the case from last season and this season are being put together slowly I think it's hard to say anything about it until the puzzle is almost solved.
Favorite lines from yesterdays episode:
Junkie:You wanna get with Omar? You need to stand out on a corner with a bigass package...and you'll be seeing that ***** soon enough!
Detective Freeman:Kinda smart for a fatman.
Rawls:He quits or he drowns. Thats the only way he gets off that boat.

I loved McNulty's trip back to Homicide. His salute to Rawls was absolutely priceless. Jay calling him "Gilligan" and "little buddy" was good for a laugh, but McNulty one-upped him by looking at the river of red Jane Does and going "Oooh. Ouch."
As usual, the small moments were the best. Frank and Nick talking about how it used to be, and Freeman and Bunk taking the PA cop (I need to learn her name, because she's cool as hell and is fitting right in...) out to the docks and getting the lay of the land from her. I loved her story about how she became a cop.
On a completely crass note: Nick's girlfriend:

Although it's the very definition of slow moving, this show keeps getting better.
I just wonder how McNulty will be able to get back together with the team. 'Cause you know it'll happen.

Another quality episode. One of the things I noticed about the show is that the people are all so average looking, none them are much above average (although a few are sharp dressers
)
This is one of the few shows I'm following at the moment, I wouldn't put it with SFU or Sopranos, but definately better than the average craptacular stuff on TV.
The only thing I don't like so far this season is Ziggy and his shall we say, exhibitionist qualites.

Personally, I find it easily better than both. The last season of Sopranos was a big disappointment, and I lost interest in SFU rather early in this season.

This show is much more grounded and real than either. (And they're all miles ahead of anything on poor ol' Showtime
)

"The Wire" 29-6
"...or else I'll be with Muffy at the club..."
Omar is the man. Indeed.
Did I really see Valcek *gasp* actually do some police work?
Things starting to take shape.

Loved this episode as well! It's good to see the plots starting tocome together. I also love Omar's character, and Bubs telling McNulty that he almost pissed his pants from Omar's shotgun was priceless!

It looks like somebody's in trouble with that print Valchek lifted. He's not as dumb as he looks.
I also liked Omar talking to the prosecutor and McNulty ready to crack up.

Defiantely one of the best shows on TV. Another solid episode.
I liked Jimmys wife showing the house to the dock worker.
Its nice to see the murder investigation is already moving to the wire with Jimmys old partner sitting down with the Lutenant.
I'm hopping Ziggy doesn't come up with the money.
I loved him getting beat down at the start of the episode. Got to wonder why he wouldn't go to his dad for the $$ if it means dying. His cousin has real stones going up to the dealer and negotiating with him but Ziggy is a loser and a lost cause.
Oh and I also love that everyone knows more about boats than Mucnulty. I do have a feeling in the end he won't be on the team but he'll be the one to crack the case. He's a stand up guy.

Another great episode. I cracked up when McNulty was reading "Boating World" during Omar's interview.
I didn't realize that was McNulty's wife that was showing Nick the house.
I too hope that Ziggy bites it next week.

I didn't catch either of those: 1-it was McNulty's wife or 2- he was reading boat world! That's hilarious!!! I loved Bubs showing him how to tie a knot- great episode!
By the way- what were the beads that the Greek was holding? They looked like rosary beads, but they were on a string... anyone know?

Yep, another solid episode.
Trivia note: the building the police team is based out of on the north side of the harbor, even though it's supposed to be in the SE district. Also the diner where the dock worker and the ganster meet is just down the street from that building. The diner is as "greasy spooish" (if not more so) as it appears on the show.

Cool, we've got Charm City guys on the board who can vouch for the show's authenticity.
The running joke about McNulty's inability w/ knots is brilliant. I loved his partner a couple of weeks ago: "Why don't you just tie a couple of bunny ears while you're at it?"
I wonder if Bubbles might have been in the Navy in the 'Nam era?
Another vote for Dead Ziggy here.
And let me state, again, that I LOVE LOVE LOVE Callie Thorne, who plays Jimmy's wife. She added a lot to Homicide when she came on as Seatlle Laura Ballard, ace detective, Pembleton foil and 1st class babe. They need to make up...

Additional trivia: the Diner is steps away from the "John Brown" from the first season of the Wire. And also a couple of blocks away from where McNulty's boat is stored.
Deep trivia: when McNutly is tying up the boat, a couple of red brick buildings are apperent on the waterfront behind him. These are the "Tindeco Wharf" buildings providing housing for Yuppies wanting to live downtown. Tom Clancy owns a condo there.
