This will be the one show on HBO where we don't know where the new season is going to take us. All of the other HBO shows basically have the same cast and storyline coming back year after year. The big question is, will some of the "bad" guy characters be back for the second season? There are a couple of them that I would like to see back next season.

Hopefully they reair it... I watched the first episode when it was originally on, and liked it, but then got involved in other stuff, or something, because I didn't watch it after that.

I wasn't here to testify about it, but I was there from the start. Having watched Homicide: Life on the Streets loyally for seven years and being treated to the best dramatic program in the history of American TV, I know the name "David Simon" means very high quality.
This was the best miniseries I've ever seen. It was the best show on HBO this year (and I love Six Feet Under). It will likely get nada at the Emmys, what with all the Sopranos and West Wing ass kissing, and that's a shame. The Wire was so much truer, more realistic and so much more honestly dramatic that those two overrtated shows. (Yes, I did say that.)

It seems that HBO is the only network these days that knows what shows to keep and what shows to discontinue.
with that said, I can't wait for the second season of The Wire.
Im also dripping in anticipation of Oz. Is the starting date still around january 16th?

Here's an article from the Baltimore Sun talking about the upcoming season.

If they're going to focus on the port, that would seem to mean a lot of screen time for McNulty.
(It was kind of interesting to me to be watching Surviving Picasso a couple of weeks after the show ended and suddenly realizing that it was Peter Geherty and Dominic West speeding down those narrow roads together in the car and on the bike. "Who's your daddy?" indeed )

HBO The Wire Discussion
I only caught a few episodes of this. I thought it sucked for the most part. Does anyone know if HBO will continue this series or not?

Fantastic show. While it's closer to Oz than The Sopranos in terms of mass-market appeal, it's the type of top-notch programming HBO needs to hang on to with those two shows going into their final seasons. HBO did in fact order a second season, and if I'm not mistaken, they're currently casting new characters.
Very light information about next season but possible spoiler to those who haven't seen the first season (albeit VERY mild):

The Wire was a great show. It was quite slow with character development/introduction, but was excellent after the first few episodes. Don't sell it short if that's all you saw. Glad to see it is sticking around.

There will be a second season? Yhe way it ended I thought there was no opening and I heard that it was always planned as a one off season from the start. I loved the show myself and would be psyched to see it come back....

But this was a show that was very complicated, that did not have an arrest of the week to tie up that episodes loose ends. Even the ending arrests were not really that satisfying, since there were no big shootouts. I think this show was a realistic portrayal of how police work is done and that it is not always exciting and glamourous.
But one thing it did for me, was give me a greater appreciation of the lives that many inner city kids have to face. The saddest part was the young kid who was executed by his friends near the end of the series. He wanted a better life for himself and his family and saw selling drugs as that way. But when information that he gave to the bad guys, leads to the death of another bad guy, he reevaluates his life and takes a step away from the drug selling, but is ultimately drawn back in, which ends in his shooting death.
So, if season one is repeated, I encourage everyone to watch this show from the beginning and give it a chance.
Chris
