Welp. I've finally had it happen - a movie got removed from my library.

Amazon sent me an email, notifying me that The Horn Blows at Midnight was no longer available: "This content is no longer available to customers through Prime Video". They put the cost of the video on my to my account balance.

Well, that is something at least. Sucks that it happened, but I wouldn't feel too burned if they refunded me what I paid.

If it's a one-off or very rare occurrence, I'm not too bothered by it (although there are a few specific titles that I would be very annoyed if it happened to). But it does give me concerns more generally about having so much of my stuff in the cloud (from videos to music to books to games).

Amazon is different from other streaming services. They allow individuals to create an account and submit content for sale. That's why you see so many poor quality videos for obscure movies on Prime Video. Lots of times they aren't properly licensed or they're "public domain" prints. Sometimes the proper rights owner demands that Amazon pull the content down. That's happened in the past with bootleg Kindle books. At least that's my understanding. I could be wrong.

That does suck. I'm sure we will be seeing more of that as years go by.

While I would gripe, as long as a) I'm notified and b) I get a refund or credit for the full amount, I wouldn't hold too much of a grudge.

I've definitely got a ton of stuff in the cloud - between Vudu purchases, Amazon music library stuff, my preexisting music library I uploaded years back to Amazon (which at least I still have on CDR and hard drive), digital games (some of which I've already lost with no recompense - Rocket Riot, Battleborn, some Rock Band tracks).
It's an interesting shift. I think it's quite likely "they" would be totally happy moving away from the whole concept of "ownership" in favor of streaming and cloud based services. My son uses Spotify for his music (rather, to listen to music, it's not his), I'm betting a large portion of <30 year olds are the same.

Same thing happened to me today, was notified that the Dublin Dr Pepper documentary was removed and credit to my account. Amazon claims they lost the license, but still selling and why would it matter. I could understand to no longer sell, but to outright remove. Not sure how that's legal.

As noted by another user above, it's legal because it's almost always that whoever uploaded it in the first place didn't actually have the rights to do so, because Amazon's system has a relatively weak system in place to ensure content is legit. I remember it happened with One Cut of the Dead as well.

It sucks for you, as someone who bought the stolen content, but Amazon puts themselves at a higher risk if they keep that content accessible to people at all, even if they paid to watch it (rental or digital purchase). It's why they also refunded you in full. It relieves them of liability for the transaction taking place.

There's no way you could have known it was bootleg content, but that's not a legitimate reason for Amazon to keep it on their server, hidden or not.

And even if it weren't bootleg, the 'fine print' for all these 'sellers' of digital content basically says "You have access to this stuff until we decide you don't." There hasn't been a solid or high-enough-profile "ownership of digital content" argument or case to really push it yet.

Sony was apparently concerned that since little kids under 12 can't get vaccinated, it would be highly unlikely many parents would take their kids to see this in the theater, since this is the primary audience.

That's probably a good call. Have any kids movies released only in theaters? I know that the Pixar stuff has all been on Disney Plus, Raya was Premier Access, Spongebob was Paramount + and Boss Baby was... Peacock, I think?

The biggest story in that article is not the headline but a passing reference the author makes to Amazon's "purge" of content:

I checked my own Watch List (comprising hundreds of titles) and learned, to my shock, that 90-95% of the titles are either:

1) "currently unavailable to watch in your location”

2) now charging rental fees of varying degrees

3) “Watch Now Free with Ads – IMDB TV”

Most of the titles I saved to my Watch List were "Free with Amazon Prime"--without ads--when I saved them. Now, only a handful of the ones I checked remain that way, including a few seasons of Pokemon and other random anime series; some Amazon Original series; and lots of black-and-white B-movies, including westerns, from the 1930s and '40s. Not quite the range of choices that drew me to the service originally.

I really hate the IMDB-TV "free with ads" titles. I understand wanting to provide a free service for people that can't/won't pay for Prime, but if I'm paying for Prime, I feel like I should be able to watch the IMDB-TV titles ad free as well. There's not even an option to pay more to make IMDB-TV ad-free. I've been avoiding watching the new season of Leverage due to this.

I feel like the past year or so the amount of new content (monthly) has dropped significantly too. They used to have huge announcements of acquiring catalogs of stuff too. I guess they're banking on MGM.

I hate all "free with ads" content. Now that I have access to ad-free content it's hard for me to watch content with ads. About the only thing I watch regularly with ads is stuff on Pluto or Airy.

I won’t be watching the Bosch spinoff for the same reason.

I understand this sentiment that you and others here don't like watching "free" shows and movies with ads. I don't know this for a fact, but it's probably possible that Leverage was financed under a different business model and it's being paid for by ads pre-sold ahead of time. Same goes for the content they acquire to be streamed under this model. None of us here are entertainment business lawyers, so we don't know the intricacies of how these deals work.

For the record, the ad breaks on Leverage are not that intrusive. The breaks only run maybe 2 minutes tops.

I went through Amazon last night and noticed they wiped out a lot of content that I had saved in my watch list that was previously available on Prime. A lot of it was some 1980s and 1990s B action movies. I guess they did do some kind of purge recently. Or maybe no one was watching those movies because no one knew they existed on the service? I only found them on a whim through the recommendations they gave. Some of them I just didn't have time to get to.

Can anyone in the US verify that the UK series Fat Friends S4 is still available?

I can't tell if it's not available because I'm in Canada, or that the content was removed.
