Amazon Prime Instant Video Service Officially Announced

Amazon announcement on their home page: http://www.amazon.com

Engadget's Review:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/22/a...deos-hands-on/

Amazon has just turned on its Prime Instant Video service, letting paid Prime subscribers (sorry, students) in the US (sorry, foreigners) stream any of 5,000 movies and TV shows directly to their machines free of charge -- well, free beyond the $79 Primers already pay. Jeff Bezos has confirmed that there will be no extra charge going forward for this service and that Prime itself will not be getting more expensive to pay for all these bits and bytes. Right now the selection is limited, particularly if you already have a Netflix subscription, but we just had to try it out. Click on through for our impressions on a variety of devices.

-------

So it's finally here...what do you think? No Amazon app for the PS3 (for now) so it sort of limits me at the moment.

$6.58 a month for expedited shipping and free movie streaming? That's well beyond the definition of a bargain.

We also have threads going in TV and Blu-ray Bargains. Would it be desirable to combine them, maybe in the Store forum?

No, we need as many threads about this as possible. Why should The Dark Knight have all the fun?

Amazon Studios - Developing Original Shows for Amazon Instant Video

Amazon is going to start producing original content for their Instant Video store.

Amazon TV: Retail Giant Gets Into Original Programming With New Comedy And Kids' Shows On The Way

Amazon is looking to add some new shows to its streaming video library -- specifically, yours.

The online e-commerce giant with the burgeoning Instant Video site has announced a major initiative from its Amazon Studios wing: Starting now, Amazon is accepting ideas for TV shows from anybody who has a pilot script, an idea for five or six episodes, and an Internet connection. Amazon says that it will be selecting one idea per month to put into development. If it passes muster and Amazon decides to produce a full slate of shows, the creator will be given $55,000, up to five percent on sales of licensed merchandise, and "other royalties and bonuses," per a press release from Amazon.

Amazon is looking, specifically, for comedies and kids' shows; if you are submitting either, you need to have a completed pilot script in order to be considered.

The Amazon Prime Streaming Thread

What are you all watching for free?

I was about to sign up for a month of Netflix to watch Spirit of the Marathon since I'm watching part II at the theater next month and was happy to see Amazon has it as part of Prime Videos.

Re: The Amazon Prime Streaming Thread

Amazon Prime's strength lies in its TV shows: Justified, The Good Wife, Bunheads (Gilmore Girls 2.0), Suits, Grimm, The Shield

The "newer" movies are more or less the same on Netflix and Prime (Hunger Games, What to Expect When You're Expecting, Cabin in the Woods, Safe, etc; ) TBH, I mostly just use Netflix and have Amazon Prime as a bonus. I use it more now that I have a Roku 3 w/ that search functionality, but it's still my secondary streaming service.

What's wrong with the current topic discussing Amazon instant freebies and interesting other things to watch?

Re: The Amazon Prime Streaming Thread

They don't specifically address what's free all the time for Amazon Prime, I think it's a different enough kind of topic.

Viacom made a deal with Amazon, so MTV shows, Comedy Central shows and Nick/Nick Jr shows will be returning there.

I'd recommend the second season of Alphas for fans of adult-oriented superhero fantasy. Yes, it does end on a cliffhanger that will never be resolved.

They also have a bunch of the older Real World/Road Rules Challenges available.

Rubicon is available. Fantastic one season series that did a slow burn over 13 episodes. The final episode was disappointing, but the first 12 were terrific.

Just finished up the first two seasons of Falling Skies last weekend. Might have to buy season 3 since it'll be nearly a year before it goes up on Amazon Streaming.

Also just finished up season 1 of Sons of Anarchy last night. I will probably take a quick break to rewatch Breaking Bad season 5 part 1 on Netflix, before returning to SoA to hopefully catch up before it returns for the new season.

Just noticed that Paprika is on here, been meaning to rewatch it for some time. It's the subbed version.

It's Ghost in the Shell to Inception's Matrix. If that makes any sense.

Also happy to see Audition and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer on there.

Re: The Amazon Prime Streaming Thread

I finished up Justified season 3 this past week. Gonna obviously wait a bit before they make season 4 available for PRIME. Started Suits season 2 in the meantime. I did watch the first episode of Falling Skies but am not sure I want to keep going, because I was not impressed at all by it.
