Re: The Roku Thread

Wow Drew Carey,Moonlighting and Dream On shows many thought would never make it to streaming due to music/footage rights issue all released withing 1 year. Wonder if that leaves hope for Muppet Babies which has similiar issues to Dream On as the show used a ton of clips from tv/movies

Re: The Roku Thread

The new Roku Ultra is on sale for $79.99 at Target and Amazon:
Amazon Amazon

The reviews have been very positive. I'm debating getting the new Ultra or switching to Apple TV so I can watch iTunes extras. My current Roku Ultra LT is having remote control problems. When I press the volume down button, it's exiting out of videos and apps. I guess I may have dropped it one too many times.

Re: The Roku Thread

We've been using the Roku Stick for 2 years and besides having to replace remotes because our kids are rough with them, what's the big advantage of the Roku Ultra? It seems to basically do what the Stick does, except I need to find counterspace for it instead of have it hang off the back of the TV. Any thoughts?

It's the fastest and most powerful Roku model. It has the new updated remote and has an Ethernet and USB port if you want to plug in and not have to rely on WiFi. I switched to an ultra model after my streaming stick 4K started having issues overheating. I've had no overheating issues since.

Re: The Roku Thread

Hmm, okay, that does sound pretty good, thank you for the info.

We use T-Mobile Home Internet with Google Nest. Both the T-Mobile device and the primary Nest device are literally next to the TV, so the connection is likely fine, but using an ethernet cable may be all the better. May be worth the upgrade.

Anyone else?

Re: The Roku Thread

I've got a couple of Ultras and a Stick. I like having the Ultras for the fast Ethernet connection.

Box is more versatile in placement. Stick can only stick in TV.

I mean you can just get an hdmi extender and then you can put the stick anywhere, right?

I guess you're right on that one. Box also has more memory so you can download more apps.

Re: The Roku Thread

I ended up ordering the new 2024 Ultra. It won't be here until Monday or later unfortunately. I really want a Apple TV 4K, but I can't really justify paying $129.99 or $149.99 for one.

Re: The Roku Thread

I have both, only thing I really use my Apple TV for is Apple Music (which has been glitchy since the last update) and games.

I'm curious what makes you use the Roku instead of the Apple TV? Certain features?

Re: The Roku Thread

Mainly Movies Anywhere and Vudu (I refuse to call it by its new name) work better on the Roku. The NVidia Shield is my main unit above those 2 though, mainly for SmartTube (ad-free YouTube with better flexibility than their regular app.) The Shield doesn’t however switch to 24fps for the regular movie apps.

I have the Apple TV 4k model and no issues with either Movies Anywhere or Fandango at Home.

Re: The Roku Thread

You can’t rent or buy from the Apple TV app, and I don’t think it even shows your TV show library. The Apple does play 3D titles in side by side format though, the Roku won’t play them at all. Don’t know why they disabled that on most devices.

Re: The Roku Thread

The Apple TV app itself? You can most certainly rent and buy from it. Or are you talking about the MA/FaH apps?

Apple merged the movies and tv together starting with 17.2 but yes the Apple TV app shows them.

Apple Music has been glitchy for iPhone, too.

No glitches here either but I haven't been an iOS 18 guinea pig (aka unpaid beta tester).

Re: The Roku Thread

I ended up fixing my Roku Ultra LT remote problems. I ran the remote control setup again and it fixed it. It doesn't exit out of videos and apps when I press volume up or down. Now my Roku is working fine after I ordered the new 2024 Ultra....

I was able to cancel my order. My current Roku Ultra is working fine now that I was able to fix the remote.

Re: The Roku Thread

I ordered one of the new Ultras on sale. My current Roku stick on our main TV is probably close to ten years old and it's starting to get flakey, I'm well overdue for a new one anyway, I didn't realize that I had my current one so long as it always worked great until now.

Re: The Roku Thread

I don't really know if I NEED to upgrade my Ultra, but I do need a new remote for it. That said, getting the new Ultra and moving my OG Ultra to the, not used as much but still used occasionally, TV upstairs may not be a bad Idea.
