Re: The Roku Thread
Roku just essentially bricked my Ultra player because it's trying to force me to accept some new Dispute Resolution Terms. Something about agreeing not to participate in a class action lawsuit against them.

File a class action lawsuit for that!
It’s been probably a year since I last used my Roku. Only things it’s best at now are Vudu and Movies Anywhere.

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.
This way, when an owner of a Roku TV takes a short break from playing a game on their Xbox, or streaming something on an Apple TV device connected to the TV set, Roku would use that break to show ads. Roku engineers have even explored ways to figure out what the consumer is doing with their TV-connected device in order to display relevant advertising.

Re: The Roku Thread
^^ I get that would be annoying and I wouldn't want it either, but note that could only work for "Roku TVs", not the Roku box devices.
I wouldn't be surprised if someday they start showing ads instead of the screensaver on the devices, though.

Right, the purge in my household would be more on principle. Plus I have a Roku TV. Although I guess I can disconnect it from the internet and use an external streaming box if it comes to that.

Roku got hacked. Over 570K accounts compromised. Probably should change your passwords.

Re: The Roku Thread
If bad actors used stolen passwords from another account then Roku wasn't hacked, unless I just don't understand the definition of being hacked.
Then the first response to this tweet is someone who claims they got this email but used a unique password...

On the other hand, they changed their dispute resolution terms on March 17, 10 days after they were alerted to the strange activity, and a month before they publicly notify their customers. It seems like they at least for a while thought they had royally fucked up and were wanting to cover their asses by having almost all users agree to the new terms before telling anyone. See this post RocShemp made a month ago:
If the Stop the FOMO guy's suspicion is correct, this was all about Roku trying to cover their butts after a user data breach.
Here's an article about the breach, that was posted over at AVS Forum.

Companies know their customer data is extremely valuable but they don't want to pay the expense for serious IT maintenance and security. I've grown increasingly numb given how many prominent national companies have been hacked.
