Have you ever used the mobile Roku app? You can use your phone or iPad as a remote with the app. The only thing it won't do is change the input, turn the TV off, or adjust the volume.

I haven't used it for a while but I have used it a lot. I think an update made some changes I didn't like. Anyway, it was great for using the ear buds because the phone battery didn't' run down like it does when using the ear buds on the Roku Remote.

Re: The Roku Thread

Just a remind that the new Ultra is on sale for $79.99 and the Streaming Stick 4K is now on sale for $29 at Amazon.

Re: The Roku Thread

Does the Roku stick 4K give Dolby vision and Dolby Atmos for Peacock?

Peacock doesn't supply DA/DV on the Atv4K or the Amazon Firestick.

Okay from from Roku com
Looks like it has hdr10+ and DV but no Armos

Need to buy the Ultra to get that.

Re: The Roku Thread

Peacock needs to get their head out of their ass and fix DV/DA on the 4K Apple TV.

Its not only Atv4K it's almost all devices that aren't a Roku.

Re: The Roku Thread

Not Roku, but the Kodi addon for Peacock called "SkyOTT" works perfectly. Passes Atmos, works with adblockers, and no on-screen crap from the native app.

Re: The Roku Thread

I’ve never figured out how to get a Kodi to work on my firestick.
Maybe I’ll revisit that in a couple of months after we move into the new house.

Re: The Roku Thread

My remote control problems started back up again. I've ran the remote setup multiple times and no luck. It's still exiting out of videos when I press the volume buttons. I went ahead and ordered a cheap $9.99 remote from Roku.com that's compatible with my Ultra LT. I'm going to try that instead of buying a new Ultra. If that doesn't work, I'll buy the new Ultra. My Ultra LT is only two years old. I bought it from Walmart on Black Friday for $30. Hopefully this will fix it.

Sorry, I didn't see this until now. My new Ultra is working well except for a couple minor annoyances:

- the remote's voice control feature was sometimes triggered for no reason, unless perhaps something that was being said on the video I was watching set it off. So the sound of the video would then mute as the remote was trying to understand the command it thought it was hearing, kinda annoying. My old remote wasn't overly sensitive like this. I don't use voice control anyway, and there's a switch on the side of the remote to turn it off, so that's what I did.

- the volume overall seems lower on some of the apps than with my old Roku. With the old one, I could watch most videos at around a 15-25 level according to my television's display. Now with some of the apps, like Disney+, I have to turn it up to 35-40 for the same volume level I'm used to. Not sure what's causing that, especially with some apps like YouTube the volume levels seem the same as it used to be.

That was happening with my last Roku as well, one reason why I bought the new one.

Re: The Roku Thread

The Roku models are still on sale. They used to only be on sale on Black Friday week and cyber Monday. I bought the new Roku Ultra since the remote on my Ultra LT was glitching and driving me crazy. I set it up last night and so far so good. A few glitches. It started with it wired and then tried to set up WIFI as a backup and it wouldn't connect. I restarted it and then it would finally connect. I like the new remote, but it lights up every time I touch it. I find that a little annoying. I'm sure it's helpful for some people, but after ten years I basically know my way around a Roku remote by touch.

Great to know as I need to pick one (or two maybe) up for a friend who I'm switching from a $300 DirectTV package to YTTV and the Disney/Hulu/Max bundle.

Roku Being Sold? Amazon is Reportedly a Possible Buyer According to Reports

Roku, the streaming platform that once faced Wall Street’s skepticism, is now attracting renewed attention from investors and analysts alike. After a prolonged slump that saw its stock price plummet from its 2021 peak, Roku has experienced a recent surge, with shares rising 26% since late November. This resurgence is fueled by growing speculation that the company could be a prime target for acquisition in 2025. his raised the question of who will be the likely buyer. Now, according to Laura Martin, there are several likely buyers.

With that, Amazon is now listed as a potential buyer. Martin also pointed to Amazon as a potential acquirer, emphasizing the value of Roku’s first-party data for training large language models and the potential for Amazon to tie Roku’s advertising to purchases on its platform. This is all according to Laura Martin at Guggenheim.

Re: The Roku Thread

I read a different article on buying TVs in 2025 and to expect lower prices, more ads and OS war. It did have a section on a Roku potentially being acquired but didn't mention Amazon.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024...and-an-os-war/

If Amazon did buy them, would they keep both platforms? Roku and Fire.

Re: The Roku Thread

Just when Roku can't get any worse... "testing" ads BEFORE you're allowed to get to the home screen.

Owners of smart TVs and streaming sticks running Roku OS are already subject to video advertisements on the home screen. Now, Roku is testing what it might look like if it took things a step further and forced people to watch a video ad play before getting to the Roku OS home screen.

Reports of Roku customers seeing video ads automatically play before they could view the OS’ home screen started appearing online this week. A Reddit user, for example, posted yesterday: “I just turned on my Roku and got an unskippable ad for a movie, before I got to the regular Roku home screen.” Multiple apparent users reported seeing an ad for the movie Moana 2.

When reached for comment, a Roku spokesperson shared a company statement that confirms that the autoplaying ads are expected behavior but not a permanent part of Roku OS currently. Instead, Roku claimed, it was just trying the ad capability out.

I'm switching to Apple TV if I have to watch an ad just to go to the home screen.

Re: The Roku Thread

Anyone with a quarter of a brain would be able to determine that more ads would piss people off, so what kind of information is Roku trying to collect from simply "trying the ad capability out"?

It's not about whether it will piss people off, it's about how many people will tolerate it compared to how much extra revenue it will drive.

Companies nowadays are all about making their product shittier if it will make them more money. They don't care if they lose some customers, as long as the total amount of money from the remaining ones mean they have more revenue and/or are more profitable.

Re: The Roku Thread

Exactly, what is the threshold where people are annoyed but not enough to stop using their products. It's a delicate balance.

But for the most part these are people who have already spent money on their ecosystem and unless they already have alternatives, will stay if things aren't egregious. Like what choice do you have if you have a roku tv? I wonder how they measure people like me who won't even look at their stuff anymore when shopping because of things like this.

They can do some polling to try and see if people are going to avoid them entirely after an antic like this, but it's largely a blind spot.

There's an phenomena I've read about called the Trust Thermocline, where a company keeps making things worse gradually, until they make some minor change, and everyone abandons the platform. Many companies don't realize how close they are to the edge until they cross it, and then it's too late.

Be sure to submit feedback to Roku, including that you're considering a different product. The only way Roku dials this back is if enough people complain.

Re: The Roku Thread

In case anyone here has noticed...

An update to Roku OS has resulted in colors looking washed out in HDR content viewed on Roku apps, like Disney+.

Complaints started surfacing on Roku's community forum a week ago. On May 1, a company representative posted that Roku was “investigating the Disney Plus HDR content that was washed out after the recent update.” However, based on user feedback, it seems that HDR on additional Roku apps, including Apple TV+ and Netflix, are also affected. Roku’s representative has been asking users to share their experiences so that Roku can dig deeper into the problem.

Just noticed on my Roku that it’s “Streaming Day”. A bunch of discounts on short term streaming app subscriptions. Some as low as 99 cents.
