Re: Hulu to start charging for content as early as 2010

The blog posting I saw led off with "ad-supported" so I was surprised at the $10 fee.

Yeah, seems fine to me - pay a relatively small fee to watch current and past episode whenever you want? What's the problem here?

I usually just need recent episodes anyway, and I don't mind the 30-60 second ads. I won't be subscribing.

I was hoping to see TiVo included in that list.

I'll suffer through using the PS3 instead.

I see no problem with this. It's allowing you to watch every single season of most current popular shows and alot of older shows with no expiration dates on the episodes. Plus, it's now allowing you to watch content on your IPad, IPhone or Itouch & other machines.

It's definitely a cheaper alternative for those who don't want/can't afford cable.

I have a Samsung Internet enabled BR player. I'm hoping it's compatible with this because that would be awesome to watch Hulu content in my living room as well.

It's coming in 2011. You can unofficially use it with the 360 on Playon right now.

not worth it to me. I just use Hulu usually for Hells Kitchen. 10 bucks a month, i dont think its worth it. I already got me a Netflix Account. I dont think they are gonna have much success with Hulu Plus.

If they have complete seasons of shows that won't be deleted everytime a network has a hissy fit, it would easily be worth 10 bucks a month, as long as I can get a box to stream it to a real TV.

Quite the contrary, I think they'll do just fine. A vast majority of people aren't tech savy. Most people don't know a thing about torrent or file conversion. It's so easy to just open a browser and watch episodes. On this alone, it'll attract a lot of tech retards.

@ $10 month. Hulu should learn from Megavideo. They only charge $40 a year unlimited streaming and get to watch almost any show and movies.

If you look on the 1st page, it says they are carrying every season of House, The Office, Desperate Housewives, 30 Rock, Grey's and hundreds more.

I missed last season of Bones and the final 2 seasons of Ugly Betty and I wouldn't mind having the ability to stream those anytime I want without buying the DVD sets or waiting to see if Netflix will carry them. Plus, there are no expiration dates on the episodes which is nice too.

I don't want to get into a debate about Piracy, but the people who upload stuff onto Megavideo record it off the TV and cut out the commercials. Alot of them get taken down right away. At least with Hulu Plus, you have the option of having a larger backlog of shows you want to watch and devices you can use them on. If your too cheap for that, there is always the regular option with the last 4-5 episodes for free.

I'd consider doing it for a month or two, just so I could catch up on a few shows, but I wouldn't make it a regular thing.

Yeah having no expiration date is very important to me so I may do this eventually. Having a backlog sucks on Hulu since many show eps get pulled after a certain date while others stay for a long time.

Hulu has been good to me because I'm a person with no DVR or cable. Also, although I'm fine watching shows on my PC, like Deftones, I'm looking forward to seeing this on XBOX LIVE.

Hopefully this doesnt affect Netflix's streaming of tv shows like The Office, 30 Rock, X-files, Arrested Development, etc. I'd consider this depending on how it works on the PS3 and if it gets support for Insignia BD players.

I'll wait and see. If $10 a month gets me the shows I want, it would be well worth it even with some ads.

Re: Hulu to start charging for content as early as 2010

You know this intrigues me. We currently are at the $120 mark for cable and internet. Sure I love HD and love my DVR, but with three kids and two in sports I only have so much time for TV. I could easily cut that bill in half if not more. Everyone has a computer so access isn't an issue for us. I don't mind the ads just as long as it doesn't get as long as regular commercials. I'll watch this a little closer now.

Not me- my TV comes in over the air for free (and I STILL rarely watch it because of onscreen network logos, excessive and repeated-ad-nauseum commercials, and since the 'advent' of digital I get compression artifacts on top of all that!) The purpose of commercials in the beginning was so TV stations didn't have to charge their viewers (and until the 1980s there was usually TEN MINUTES maximum commercial time per hour!) The success of cable shows how stupid a lot of Americans are (cable started out with NO commercials or any of the other things that hindered broadcast TV, now you can hardly tell the difference between the two!)

Again, I'd pay for a quality on-demand service (Netflix comes close though their picture quality leaves much to be desired) but NOT for Hulu the way it is now. If I were an advertiser I wouldn't even want to buy ad time on it since they run a countdown clock onscreen during commercials.

Not if you have a DVR. I can honestly say that since getting a DVR 2 years ago, I rarely ever watch ads. And I say rarely because the only time I do watch ads if when I'm watching shows on Hulu.

The thing that bother's me (I won't speak for anyone else) is that to watch a HD show on "Hulu Plus" or whatever it's called, will require a lot of waiting. I will have to wait for it to load (Which with HD could take awhile...) and on top of that I will have to wait through commercials. So by the time I actually finish watching an episode of whatever show, I will have waited at least 30 minutes (usually more). That's a lot of waiting for one TV episode. Since people will be paying a premium for it, I think Hulu should do the best they can to cut the waiting time down, and cutting out commercials is an easy way to do that. It's not that big of a deal, and it probably won't affect whether I subscribe to it or not, but I would think that since they are being paid for the shows and not giving them out for free, that the ads are a little unnecessary. But that's just my opinion, I'm sure you and other people feel differently.

I bet most people with DVRs only watch commercials during live sports broadcasts.

Television back in the 80's and before then was alot cheaper to produce. Do you know how much a 1 hour scripted drama costs nowadays? Anywhere from $2M to $5M per episode and that doesn't include the licensing fees that the studio who produces the show charges the network. The money to pay for these shows has to come from somewhere and that's why we got 15-18 minutes worth of commercials as opposed to 10 minutes or less before.
