17th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread
17th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread!

Rules: Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st
Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.
If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.
Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.
As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.
Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.
3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.
Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.
Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.
Exceptions: 1: The Tarzan films are eligible to watch and count for the watch list, but not for the check list.
2. Superhero films. If they do not have a sci-fi/fantasy tag, they count for the watch list, but not for the check list.
Audio:
Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio
I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.
If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.
1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.
1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.
3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.
1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.

1. Liquid Sky (1982)--Criterion--Aliens arrive on Earth for heroin, but settle for orgasms instead.

2. Enemy Mine (1985)--TV--This feels like a sci-fi update of a WWII movie. A human soldier and an alien are marooned together on a derelict world where they have to band together to survive.
3. Virtuosity (1995)--TV--This virtual reality thriller, a relic from the 1990s, centers on a wrongly convicted cop, played by Denzel Washington, who is recruited to chase an online character that has been unleashed into the real world. Russell Crowe delivers a standout performance as the monstrous SID 6.7.

4. The Girl With All The Gifts (2016) --Blu-Ray--.Using the same "fungus turns humans into zombies" idea from The Last of Us, this movie focuses on Melanie, a young girl who is part of the second generation of fungus-infected humans who retain their humanity;

5. The Angry Red Planet (1959)--TV--For low-budget drive-in fare, this isn't bad, although the red effects depicting Mars are distracting.
6. Pitch Black (2000)--Blu-Ray--It's been a while since i've watched this Vin Diesel flick and it holds up.

7. 1984 (1984)--MGM+--In this turbulent election year, dystopian fiction has an unsettling resemblance to reality. Richard Burton delivers a chilling final performance as the ruthless Inner Party member O'Brien, while John Hurt's portrayal of the doomed Winston Smith deserved an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
8. Them! (1954)--TV--Them is without queston one of the most effective and unsettling horror/sci-fi movies from the 1950s. 70 years laler. the giant ant effects hold up well.

8. Children of Men (2006)--MGM+--It's 2027 and cicivilization has collapsed after 20 years of global human infertility, leaving Britain as a brutal police state. This is a a work of genius, one of the best science fiction movies of the past quarter-century..

9. Dreamcatcher (2003)--Streaming--A poor movie from a subpar Stephen King novel.
10. Ghosts of Mars (2001)--Streaming--Even though this is a really bad movie, it's a fun watch

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)--MGM+--This fun fantasy adventure was thoroughly enjoyable, despite its reliance on familiar character archetypes like the mage, thief, warrior, and shapeshifter. However, the clever dialogue and strong performances elevate the film, making it a genuinely entertaining experience. Given the director's deft touch, I hope he will adapt a Discworld novel in the future.

12. Gorgo (1961)--YouTube--The premise of Irish salvage explorers discovering a baby kaiju and bringing it to London, only for the mother to arrive searching for her lost offspring, has the potential to be an engaging creature feature. However, this particular execution is a snooze, especially compared to more character-driven monster movies like Cloverfield and Godzilla Minus Zero. The film's introduction of three characters is ultimately abandoned in favor of scenes depicting a man in a monster costume destroying cardboard London landmarks - an approach that fails to provide the character development and psychological depth of better films in this genre. I would have enjoyed Gorgo much more if I had watched it for the first time as a child, but for an adult viewer, the lack of compelling characters and overreliance on monster spectacle renders it unengaging.

13. Nope (2022)--TV--Nope was the first film in years to give me nightmares after seeing it, so by horror movie metrics it's a success. Jordan Peele is a fantastic director with an unerring sense of how to shock audiences. Keke Palmer gives an Oscar-worthy performance as the co-owner of a Hollywood horse ranch who discovers an aerial predator stalking her property. The metaphors here are obvious: the movie business devours people and spits them out If you give it your attention it will feed on you. Nope is a masterpiece and I need to watch it again. It's the kind of movie one really needs to discuss with a friend afterward.

Characters are shallow but at least they're not annoying.

The story has absolutely NOTHING to do with The Mummy films from where the Scorpion King character comes from and just comes off as a third-rate Conan rip-off.

I just had a tv crap out on me. It was 15 years old, so I thought I got a good run out of it. But that seems pitiful compared to all the electronics hundreds of years old still running fine. ****

And also like a lot of other recent movies I've seen, the story ended up seeming metaphorical (rather than what we were seeing being what it's really about). ***1/2

Visuals still hold up, showing the care the filmmakers took to make this and all the real locations, sets and practical effects (not just CGI). *****

40. The Brood (1979): Speaking of Cronenberg. Cool to hear Howard Shore's first score (after watching the LotR trilogy recently). His intense orchestral style really elevates the movie (and the other Cronenberg movies he scored). This movie makes so much sense when realizing Cronenberg made it in the aftermath of a bitter divorce. Taken on its own the plot is silly, but looking at the bigger picture the movie is a powerful experience. ****
41. First Men on the Moon (1964): I'm a huge Ray Harryhausen fan, but to me this is one of his lesser movies. Not his fault though ... the alien sets and creatures are great. I just didn't care for all the slapstick comedy, and the character of Prof. Cavor was unrelentingly annoying. Surprising at first to see Nigel Kneale wrote the screenplay, since his work has such a serious and intelligent aspect to it. But then I see they brought in another writer to "jazz" up the script, because the producer though fantasy and science fiction movies were too serious. ***

43. Sleeping Beauty (1959): While not one of my favorite Disney animated classics, it's a really striking movie. The animation style is done to look like medieval tapestries. And instead of the Broadway-style music you associate with Disney, this is classical (Tchaikovsky specifically). ****
44. Tron (1982): Screw you guys ... I still like this movie
Even though the CGI is primitive, I think it fits with the early 80s aesthetic and still looks cool. Especially since the setting is an artificial one, where many examples of life-like CGI from a lot later than this look cringe-worthy today. ***1/2
