Re: Official New & Upcoming Exclusive Steelbook Discussion Thread

I'm not nearly as severe about it as OldBoy, but I have also slowed down my purchases of SteelBooks. I have a shelf full of Blu-ray SteelBooks, but for the most part I feel that's enough of a...

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Arrow doesn't own the movie and is often reliant on the originating studio to provide a 4K scan, as is typically the case with other boutique labels. What they may do is their own color grading, HDR,...

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Cecil B. Demented was distributed by Artisan back in the day, but the film is owned by Studio Canal. I'd expect those old distribution deals to have expired by now, so it would depend on who Studio...

Re: Disney laid off their entire home entertainment team

Poor dynamic range on Disney sound mixes (and Atmos remixes of older movies) has been a problem for years now, at least as far back as Age of Ultron, which is when people really started noticing it. ...

Re: UHD release announcements

Again, intentional. The movie looks like it was shot on the fly with low-quality home video cameras. It was also shot in PAL format, which had to be slowed down from the original 25 fps to 24 fps for...

Re: UHD release announcements

The movie was never meant to look good. Danny Boyle shot it with "prosumer" standard-def cameras even though higher quality digital cameras were available. Attack of the Clones came out earlier the...

Re: Official New & Upcoming Exclusive Steelbook Discussion Thread

The Mel Gibson movie The Patriot? You sure you're not confusing that with another movie? Or talking about watching it at home rather than the theater? There is almost no circumstance where that movie...

Re: UHD release announcements

I loathe the Speed Racer movie, but it seems to have generated some cult fandom over time. I don't get it, either. Watching that movie was pure misery for me.

Re: The survival and revival of video stores and physical media

A lot of them do, yes. And they also don't understand the difference between material shot for movies vs. television. It's all just "old" to them.

Re: The survival and revival of video stores and physical media

Saw another set of photos on Facebook yesterday of a 4:3 disc stretched across a 16:9 HDTV. Initial comment from the poster was to insist that it's correct. When pointed out that he's clearly,...

Re: The survival and revival of video stores and physical media

The only somewhat valid argument to be made here is that older video formats such as VHS and Laserdisc do typically look better on CRT TVs, because the poor resolution of those sets hides or...

Re: The survival and revival of video stores and physical media

As someone who was huge into Laserdisc in the 1990s and early '00s, and still has a small collection of discs and a passive interest in the format, what I see on Facebook is that modern-day LD...

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I'm sure it will benefit from HDR and Wide Color Gamut. Unfortunately, all of that 1998 CGI (and this movie has tons of it) was rendered at about 1080p resolution and composited to the film the same.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

Not gonna lie, this actually makes me want to watch it. Though I have seen Jade, and that one was just dumb and boring.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

I suppose it's meant to pair with their recent release of Jade, which was equally perplexing.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Seeing talk on social media today that Arrow's version of Hard Boiled has very different color grading than Shout Factory's, with a lot of debate about which is "correct."

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

The streamers make more money from ads than they do from "premium" subscribers. If anything, they're going to downplay the availability of premium tiers and try to push everyone into the ad tiers,...

It's not my favorite, but it's nowhere near as ugly as the SteelBook, IMO.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The terrible Atmos tracks on Arrow's 4K releases for Conan the Barbarian, The Warriors, Barbarella, and other titles definitely suggest otherwise.

At best, the Atmos will be a reworking of...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

Are you comparing the same content on both formats, sourced from the same underlying video master? Or are you comparing a new 4K remaster versus some edge-enhanced and DNR-ridden Blu-ray from 2006?

Re: UHD release announcements

Which sadly means it probably won't work in half the UHD players people may have.
