Re: Taylor Swift -- Discussion Thread
I have 100% not held anything against Taylor Swift for all of the variant-style packaging and multiple releases of her music. Make art, get paid, go for it.
I will say, however, that as the dad of a Swiftie who was so excited to go to Target to pick up the new CD last night on release day, I absolutely did not appreciate the email I received from Taylor Nation this evening, less than 24 hours after opening the new CD, which said for just 24 hours only that I can order a special CD release of the album with bonus acoustic versions of the songs, as well. The timing on that feels like such a cash grab and a slap in the face to fans who bought the record on day one, just the day before.
And again, I'm usually on the side of an artist doing whatever they want, but come on. Families aren't made of money. I'm just going to hope my daughter never finds out that dad got this email and I can slink away from this one.

^ I guess The Bodyguard didn't hit #1 at the box office because I think that would be the only other female singer with a album, song and movie released at the same time. I doubt 9 to 5 had an album or was #1 at the box office..

Edit : I can't see exactly how the film did at the Box Office. It came out on Thanksgiving 11/25/92. The Album debuted at #2 and hit #1 in its second week, on 12/12/92.

You're forgetting Kdogg. Songs and Albums didn't use to debut at #1. It took weeks to rise to the top of the charts (which was stupid because of course the hot new release from a superstar artist would have been the #1 selling album that week). They used to rely on the memories of sales managers rather than sales data to chart albums. Songs didn't debut at #1 unless they were We Are The World or something like that. By the time The Bodyguard rose to #1 it was probably no longer the #1 movie in theaters.

For reference,
I Will Always Love You was released on Nov 2, 1992, but didn’t hit #1 on the Billboard chart until Nov 28.
The full soundtrack album came out on Nov 17, 1992, debuted at #2, then spent 20 non-consecutive weeks at #1 for over 20 weeks.
The movie came out on Nov 25, 1992 and was in third place opening weekend and stayed in the top 10 for 10 weeks.
I don’t think any of this is really comparable to the modern landscape where the world’s top-selling act can release an album and first single on the same day, along with amovie extended EPK exclusive to movie theatres. It’s both a triumph and manipulation of all three charts, yes, but also basically impossible to replicate, past or present.

^ Absolutely. It kind of bothers me a tiny bit that the #1 movie in the country isn't even a movie (and for all intents and purposes no longer exists).

Regarding replication, it's unlikely, but theoretically possible that the feat could be duplicated in 6 weeks if the Wicked 2 soundtrack takes off. There will certainly be a lot of interest in the new Cynthia Erivo composed and performed song.

Cool, Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield has updated his comprehensive rankings of all 286 of Taylor's songs. Highest charters from the new album are Opalite (27), Eldest Daughter (21), Elizabeth Taylor (16) and The Fate of Ophelia (10!). Lowest is CANCELLED! (250)

As I told my Swiftie friend this morning : It's just one guy's opinion.
I just enjoy watching his list form and evolve. He doesn't re-rank, per say, just inserts the new songs into his previous rankings.
He started his list 8 years ago with her full catalog of 115 songs. To explode that list to 286 in less than a decade is actually an insane output of material.
I was hoping WOOD would be in the 270's. Didn't search for it yet.

I know... ask 100 swifties and you're gonna get 100 different lists.
WOOD, musically, is a great song... let down by the lyrics.

until after Gangnam Style was stuck at #2 for weeks.
The Fate of Ophelia is rising fast but is still 40-something on Radio Songs.
Golden isn't going to fall much next week as it's #8 on Radio Songs
(and probably pass a couple more this week) and still has 30M streams.

This and the Pixies Where is My Mind on Actually Romantic I caught on the first listen because those two songs are in my wheelhouse. I don't think the Pixies would have a case (based on the Taurus/Zeppelin/Stairway case) but MoTown would (based on the Gay/Thicke/Blur Lines case). Apparently there are several other through out the album include a Spanish language song. Considering her people asked Olivia Rodrigo for a song credit for less and she gave Michael one for something I tiny, I can see a few of these folks looking for a credit.
Taylor Swift’s Showgirl era has reportedly been overshadowed by controversy following allegations that her new single, “Wood,” bears a strong resemblance to the Jackson 5’s 1969 hit “I Want You Back.” Sources claim that the new track is an exact copy of the classic. Some also accuse her of lifting the “entire groove.”
Industry insiders told Rob Shuter that the rhythm and melody of Taylor Swift’s song “Wood” not only draw inspiration from “I Want You Back” but are almost a copy of it. According to one producer, “She didn’t just take inspiration — she lifted the entire groove. It’s Motown wrapped in glitter and marketing.”
In response to these similarities, entertainment lawyers are reportedly reviewing potential copyright claims on behalf of Berry Gordy and The Corporation, the creators of the original track. “The Life of a Showgirl” continues to dominate streaming and vinyl sales. However, the allegations threaten to overshadow what was expected to be another record-breaking moment in Swift’s career.

They’re soundalikes at best. I doubt there’d be enough of a legal basis for either party to get in a fuss about it. The difference between those and the George Michael credit is that she flat out uses his vocal melody with a few very similar lines. That one would have never passed without scrutiny.

To get sued for the absolutely worst song on the album would be kinda funny though.
