Re: Taylor Swift -- Discussion Thread
The word addiction tends to get thrown around a lot... I mean, there's drug addiction which is a very real thing, but it also gets applied to things like compulsive shopping, compulsive gambling, and compulsive sexual behavior. Addicted to that rush, man.
I think that, yeah, heavy metal can be addictive (in the compulsive sense, no the brain chemistry sense you see with something like heroin). For a lot of fans, it becomes a lifestyle and defining characteristic of their identity. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing... the same thing can apply to sports fans or religious people. Addictive/compulsive in the "I can't enough heavy metal and I'm always looking for my next hit," then, yeah, that's sort of there.

The word "addiction" was being thrown around in this thread, so that's why I used it while comparing Swifties to metalheads.

We all go through it. We dread Monday because we have to go back to work. Tuesday thru Thursday we're normal. We get up Friday in a good mod because dopamine is flowing in anticipation of the weekend. All day long we feel good in anticipation of getting off work. We get off work Friday and that's when the reward hits, like an orgasm. You slowly come down as the weekend progresses until Sunday night when you bun out and dread Monday morning.

I am afraid to google "tight end university" to find out what that is. Pretty sure I will just get gay porn with college dudes.

The Tight Ends and Friends benefit concert welcomed a special guest on June 24. Taylor Swift, who has been on a musical break for six months following her successful Eras Tour, joined Kane Brown onstage at the Brooklyn Bowl for a surprise performance of her "1989" hit, "Shake It Off."
The concert was part of Tight End University, a three-day summit dedicated to uniting the NFL’s tight end community, and the only portion of the event open to the public.
All proceeds from the concert supported three charitable organizations: 87 & Running, the nonprofit founded by Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce that empowers underserved youth; The Heartest Yard, which provides support for children with congenital heart disease; and a third charity selected by San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle.
In 2023, the event raised $800,000, followed by $900,000 in 2024. Here's what else to know about the program.

Good for her and I agree when she says "My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world".
That b&w forest photo on the cover reminds me of a black metal album cover, all it needs is an impenetrable band name logo at the top.

I think it's fantastic! Listened to it over and over again. My indie-loving daughter tells me "Taylor really eats on this album", which apparently means it's very good.
There is a TON of content about folklore on The Ringer website. Good reads, especially this FAQs article which covers several things that I was confused about, like how "the last great american dynasty" is the true story of the person who previously owned Tay-Tay's Rhode Island beach house.

I thought it sucked. Sucked. I was skipping through songs. I made her folder with older hits and just wanted to hear those. This was soulful and adult no doubt, but I don’t really like Swift for that. I guess I just like her pop stuff. This was, with the exception of maybe 2 songs, not at all replayable for me. Maybe I’ll try again after your recommend, but first listen was a travesty...
Born from lockdown and isolation, it was an incredible achievement in low-key home recording.
Rolling Stone listed it as their #5 of the Century so far.
I think it's held up really well.

I will miss his podcast when he officially leaves
Marc Maron said getting the rights to Taylor Swift's music doesn't come without a hefty price tag.
The comedian and podcaster, 61, spent major dollars in order to use a specific song from the pop star's catalog for his upcoming stand-up special, he revealed on the July 25 episode of Vulture’s Good One podcast.
Licensing Swift’s song “Bigger Than the Whole Sky” — a bonus track on the 3am Edition of her 2022 album Midnights — cost about "$50,000," Maron said.
He added that he felt he needed the specific track for a pivotal moment in his HBO special, Marc Maron: Panicked, so he reached out to a mutual friend, Jack Antonoff, for help.
“I know Jack Antonoff enough to text him — and he’s the co-writer on that song,” Maron explained. “I said, ‘I don’t know what’s proper or how to do this, but we’re running out of money on this thing. It’s probably going to come out of my pocket. Is there anything you can do about this song or talk to Taylor?’ “
Maron said Antonoff, 41, advised him to go through official music licensing channels, and he was ultimately able to get approval to use the track.
It was doable,” Maron said, adding, however, that the tens of thousands of dollars only covered the use of one minute of the song.
“I would have gone over the minute, [but] it would have been more money,” he explained.
While Maron didn’t reveal the content of the bit in question, he has spoken about Swift's music — and his journey to becoming a Swiftie — in the past.
“I’m an open-minded guy, and I like music. I [wanted] to try to figure out what it is about Taylor Swift that everyone never shuts up about," he said on a May 2023 episode of his long-running podcast, WTF with Marc Maron.

Maron said he doesn’t know if Swift, 35, has heard the specific joke in the special that her team signed off on, but he was “manifesting” that she would indeed like it if she did — for the sake of his project
“It had to happen,” Maron said. “The real fear [was], like, [if] she doesn’t let you use it, and then what do you do? You can’t do the bit on the special.”While Maron didn’t reveal the content of the bit in question, he has spoken about Swift's music — and his journey to becoming a Swiftie — in the past.

“I’m like, ‘Alright. I get it.’ It’s pop music, but it’s not dance music [and] it’s, sort of, emotional. There’s a lot of longing and sadness and isolation and processing these overwhelming feelings of melancholy," he recalled.

Gotta be honest that spending $50K for a TS song, and then talking about doing it, has created more media interest in Maron's special than he ever would have gotten otherwise.

Life of a Showgirl.
Well, we know one thing about Showgirls, and that's where they're from.
She put up a new Playlist for the upcoming album, and they're all Max Martin songs!
That certainly vibes with Dan's leak photo.
