Re: What concert did you recently attend?

I like punk and metal, but it's incredibly rare I recognize more than one band on xcore's posts.

As I just mentioned in the dedicated discussion thread, saw Haim kick off their 2022 tour last night at the Chelsea theater at the Cosmopolitan

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Again, folks like asianxcore can certainly illustrate it better, but I think other than the "arena rock" phase of the 70s, the "hair metal" craze of the 80s, and a few bands like Metallica after that, metal has mostly stayed an underground genre. But certainly a popular one with a dedicated fanbase. I used to work with a lot of Finnish guys, and they wore shirts of bands that I'd never heard of. Hell, I didn't even know the bands' names after seeing the shirts because apparently it's required that a metal band's logo be completely illegible. I always tell the story (maybe even here at least once) of these be-suited Finnish execs demonstrating our new product at an all-hands meeting by showing a video of Manowar.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

I saw Steve Hackett last Saturday (4/23) at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. He and his band performed all of Seconds Out and Selling England By The Pound. While I would have enjoyed more of his solo work, who am I to say no to any live performance of classic Genesis material by an original member?

I'd say the average age of the crowd was probably around 58. South Florida isn't exactly known for having enthusiastic rock crowds (unless it's a huge arena/stadium tour that will attract South American residents and tourists). But it was a sold out show and the crowd was totally into it. Not even kidding, there were a ton of standing ovations. And the roof was nearly blown off entirely after all 24 minutes of Supper's Ready. I may have peed.

I find it really interesting that small bands can have a much bigger following than when I was younger. It used to be if you didn't hear a song on the radio or read about them in a magazine, you'd likely not discover a band unless a friend or clerk at a record store told you about them. Now it's easy to float from one band to another on Spotify or Pandora. And while the barrier for hearing most was the cost of an LP (which isn't insignificant for a lot of folks), now it's just a button click and a few minutes of listening time. Completely different sort of musical experience, and a different relationship with an artist's music as well.

I've got front row for The Cult tonight at Graceland Live. Time to relive my high school days when I wore out a cassette of Sonic Temple in my tape deck.

Would love to see The Cult again, Sonic Temple tour was the last time I saw them but not coming up to Seattle. Hopefully they'll do more dates later in the year.

Had a local music festival this weekend and I was able to see The Drums and Trail of Dead. Both sounded really good and Trail of Dead was at a smaller stage and got to get really close. I was at Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats a week earlier which was an awesome show.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Live Nation Concert Week started today. $25 all-in tickets for a bunch of artists. It varies from market to market but there are quite a few good shows. I picked up tix for The Who, Bauhaus, and Peter Hook. Still considering a few others.

I looked at Bauhaus in Dallas, but they only listed the standard $55 ones.

Yeah, each market is different. There are some artists' shows in Houston that are not available in other cities. Conversely, there are some artists' shows in other cities that are not available here. I am not sure what it is based on. Venues? Ticket Sales? Who knows.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Saw Phoebe Bridgers tonight, first stop on her World Tour. It was at a new venue, an Amphitheatre in North Las Vegas, which is extremely unusual for this town, but Phoebe had already stated that she would only perform at outdoor venues for this tour. Fortunately the weather was nice this time of year so it was a wonderful evening out. I think Phoebe is amazing and it was a terrific show. Seats were pretty good as well, it's a tiny venue.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Nice! I saw her last year and it was excellent. Seeing her again at a much bigger venue next month, but my seats aren't nearly that good.

Flew down to LA last weekend for Cruel World Festival. Such a packed 80's weekend it was!

First time seeing Paul McCartney. At 79, he went nearly three hours with no break. Great time.

Bauhaus and Devo alone made it worthwhile.

That's a cool line up. Saw Morrissey back in September and thought he was great.

Last show of their 40th anniversary tour in North America. 2 years delayed because of covid. It's a pretty daunting schedule, but they were in great spirits. Just a genuinely happy and thankful pair of blokes.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Wow, that is a LOT of Phish. Do they do a completely different set every night?

I know they have a loyal and dedicated following and that it's probably the same crowd who followed the Dead around. That seemed strange to me as well. I guess the difference is, for me, at least I knew a handful of Dead songs. If you held a gun to my head and asked me to name even one Phish song, I would cry and come up empty.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Yeah, they’ve never played the same set twice, and have never afaik played the same song 2 shows in a row.
