When they released a bunch of front row behind the stage tickets on Monday, I was VERY close to booking a flight and going down for the kickoff. I have a pre-COVID credit for United that I've been sitting on, but the flights jumped up too much last minute since when I looked at them last month. Maybe I'll go to Texas next week... If not... still looking forward to the other dates I'm going to!

sorta what I did. Booked a flight down with points (refundable) a week ago and got some dropped tickets the day before the show.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Recently got tix for a Godspeed You! Black Emperor show at a bbq place outside Palm Springs. Will be literally the second concert I've ever been in my life, and I have no clue what to expect. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8 ... do people normally line up right at 7 for these things? Or generally start to migrate in sometime when they think the main act will go on?

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Last show I went to that was general admission, we got there 30, 45 minutes before doors opened, and there was a line from the venue's doors to the corner of the block.
If it's a gen-ad show, I usually try to get there at least 30 minutes before doors open. If there's a line, there's less of a line than there will be later; if there isn't, great, I can wander the venue. I like just walking around, checking out the merch stand, other people's shirts, etc. I also like to have more choice in where I'll be standing (or sitting).
People arrive anywhere from way before doors open till just before the headliner gets there. I like to see all the bands, I've found some cool bands that way.
Just depends on what you want your concertgoing experience to be.
If it's at a bbq place, you could go way early and have dinner

If it's assigned seats, I try to arrive midway between doors and show. Closer to doors open time if my seats are in the middle of a row.

Speaking of arriving early - my son went to a show last year, 4 hours before doors opened. We said, well, you'll be bored, but whatever. It turned out he got to hang out with the performer before the show, went with him to pick up coffee and go to a Gamestop, and he got upgraded to VIP for free. That was a very lucky and extremely memorable occurrence for him.

Bobby Bare Jr
Steven Conrad

Judson and Moore Distillery
Chicago IL

Huge Bobby Bare Jr fan here, and he doesn't tour much solo since joining Guided By Voices. This intimate set at a small distillery was fucking wonderful, even with Bare Jr's combination of admitted nervousness and perhaps a few cocktails. Talked to him for a few minutes before his set and he admitted to being a bit scared to get back on stage solo. Played a big batch of some of my favorites, including a pair of hits from his father. Closed his set with a few songs featuring a full band, aka The Jones Sisters - featuring Steven Conrad and Jim Becker. Conrad - the creator of the series 'Patriot' and 'Perpetual Grace', as well as a songwriter/performer - opened the show with a 30 minute acoustic set, and the guy told some great stories.

No pics, because I was enjoying the moment....

I still have a ton of photos from the 70K cruise that I can share, but I'll post a recent show, Fleshgod Apocalypse at the Forge in Joliet

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Thanks for the kind message. My first 70000 Tons of Metal cruise was a fantastic experience. 60 bands, 120 sets over 4 days. I pushed myself to see 40 different bands with a total 45 sets, but I still have regrets on not pushing myself a little more to squeeze in a few more.

But for this post, these photos are from last night at the Forge in Joliet, Swiss folk metal band Eluveitie. I saw them once before in 2015, and shortly afterwards, most of the band members were replaced, and for this tour, their main member Chrigel dropped out of the tour at the last minute for an undisclosed family emergency, so this tour was a real showcase for the rest of the band to continue the tour to sold out shows.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

That is a LOT of metal! Over ten sets a day? Up to 15? That sounds exhausting. Those are what 30-40 minutes each, I suppose?
Are you wearing hearing protection for this?

Days 1 and 3 are half days where the shows started at 5pm, the other days started at 10am. Shows ran until 6am the first three days. Day 2 included an all day meet and greet schedule which added to the complications of catching shows. Sets were 45 minutes or an hour typically.

I caught 9, 12, 9, and 15 sets on the 4 days. Day 3, I cut pretty short missing 4 sets that I had planned, but I was fresh for Day 4 at least.

Yes, it was exhausting. Here is the day 2 schedules with highlights showing what I was able to do that day.
