I don't think there's ever experience needed to become a sound man. There are some guys who are very bad at it.

No real surprises, since he's been playing essentially the same show for the last 10 years at least, but the whole thing felt fresh. He really connects with the audience too. He went out into the crowd like he always does, but he's stopped going up the stairs and going through the balcony seats. Hardly surprising. He's definitely not being dragged out on stage in a shambles to make money for someone else like BB King was.

Opening act was Colin James (not the Men at Work guy), who I never heard of but has apparently been at it since the late 80's. By the numbers blues but a solid performer. He came out and played with Buddy at the end of the show and the two sounded really good together.

At 85 it's unlikely I'll see him again, but I was surprised to see him touring again now, so anything is possible I guess.

One other thing, I saw very few people using their phone cameras during the show. Yes, the crowd skewed older since it's a blues show, but it was refreshing to see people enjoying the show instead of documenting it. Cameras were abundant when he went into the crowd, but that's to be expected.
Took my son to see Buddy at the Ryman in Nashville a couple of weeks ago. Great show! He's a fifteen year old guitar nut, and I'm trying to take him to see as many of the greats while he and I can (he's jealous that I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan when I was 16). We're headed back to Nashville tomorrow night for John Mayer at Bridgestone Arena.

Animals as Leaders/Intervals last night in Boston. Didn't know either band, only went because a friend had an extra ticket. Ended up enjoying it more than I expected, both bands were pretty tight.

Wait. Was this at the San Diego Sports Arena? If so, then no wonder the sound was muddy. There's sound waves from a Zeppelin show back in '75 that are still echoing in the rafters there.

Yeah not the best sounding place, but Ive been in just about every section of that place and I can hear the difference for sure, but at times, I could hear Arnel just fine. Other songs were just blasted with instruments, just drowning him out.

Cool. I've seen good Dylan shows and bad Dylan shows where he clearly didn't give a fuck.
How long was this set?

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

4/8/22: Sepultura with Sacred Reich, Crowbar and Art of Shock. All bands killed it! It helps that Sepultura played a mostly old school setlist.

4/15/22: Napalm Death with Final Conflict, Death Bed and Triste. The show was actually at our local brewery. All bands were great. Finally got Napalm off of my bucket list.

4/16/22: Apocalyptica with Lacuna Coil. Great show, just wished Lacuna played longer and included some more older songs in there set. Kinda surprised Cristina didn't join Apocalyptica so they can play "S.O.S. (Anything But Love)." Maybe it was too obvious.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Hey Asian core, just a question I have wanted to ask you for a while (without being pejorative) : You go to a lot of shows, but they're always several bands, almost none of whom I have ever heard of (Deftones excluded) . Do you know these bands, are you familiar with their music? Are they just local bands or are they small tours? Is one a headliner and the others opening acts? And how many people are at these shows?

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

asianxcore can obviously speak for himself, but we do have one metal club here in my city and there's multiple acts playing damn near every night. Not sure which ones are touring and which ones are local. But the club seems to do ok so I can assume they're getting enough people in the door. Metal fans do seem to support their scene.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

So with you, they're mostly bands you don't know, playing original songs you don't know? And you're there for the scene and the thrashing and stuff?

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Oh, I don't go to those shows. I'm just aware of their existence. And like I mentioned, they seem to have a lot of them so the club must be turning a profit. In other words, they're drawing decent enough crowds.

Yup! Almost 99% of the time I'm attending shows where I am very familiar with the bands playing.

The line-ups depend on what I'm attending, so it's a little hard to answer your second question.

For example, the show I went to last night was part of a 12-date tour of Desolated/These Streets/Mugshot. Desolated (who headlined) was traveling from the UK, playing half of their dates on the West Coast and the other half in the Midwest/East Coast. The other 4 bands that played were all local to Northern California but range from new/up-and-coming to well-traveled and well-established.

For last night's show, there were probably 100-150 people there in a space that holds only a little bit more than that safely.

Overall attendance depends on the venue's capacity but most of these shows are always well attended.

With other shows I attended in the past few weeks, all were full US Tours.

These are all shows housing bands with established or growing fan bases, versus the random casual Metal or Punk act you see at local bars.

A friend of mine used to be the drummer for Animals As Leaders.

Those guys are technical maniacs live and in-studio.

Woah! Yeah, they are obviously crazy talented. Not the kind of music I'll listen to on a regular basis, but I enjoyed the live show. Was surprised by the mosh pit though!

Last night - Melissa Etheridge at Casino Ballroom in Hampton NH. It was "an evening with", so no opening act. She played almost 2.5 hours, including every hit you can think of. Sounded great overall, just a wonderful, straight-ahead rock show. Although a small nit-pick - I did notice she dropped the keys on some of her older songs, to make it easier to sing. To my ears, its took away a touch of the energy. (I'm used to the original key, as my weekend-warrior club band plays 3-4 of those songs.)

4/22/22: Dragonforce/Firewind/Visions Of Atlantis/Seven Spires. Amazing show! I was really impressed with Seven Spires. I wouldn't mind seeing a headline show from them one of these days.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Billy Joel tonight in Charlotte at BOA stadium. Absolutely incredible show. He apologized for the show being canceled for 2 years, and said he’d do the hits tonight. And that’s all he played. The only song I think I wanted to hear that he skipped was The Longest Time.

Don't worry Tommy. You're not alone. I'm in the same boat -- and I went to Billy Joel just last month.
