I don’t care if the joke was written or ad-libbed, or if Rock knew anything about her condition. I understand thinking it was a bad joke, or even rude, but the fact that anyone could in any way defend violence over it either in public or private is sad.

The ratings the last few years would suggest that's not the case.

I'm glad it's back to a full show as opposed to that scaled back train station show from last year.

I should've been more specific. "People" = forum members.

Right. I think the handful of us on a movie forum aren’t really representative of the general public’s interest in the Oscars.

I watch every year but it’s becoming less and less interesting. The era of big movies and big movie stars is over. As much as I follow movie releases news, I still don’t know who many of the actors/actresses/filmmakers are. I can only assume the casual movie watcher has even more unaware of who these people are.

Counter to that is that Will Smith will be the most famous and popular movie star to win an Oscar since at least Leo and maybe since Julia Roberts. His winning WILL be a big deal and will probably draw more eyeballs to the telecast than most in recent years. Certainly more than last year when nobody cared about the nominated films.
And it's kind of impossible to know how popular Coda is, but it seems well liked which would make it a different sort of BP winner than we have seen in a while.

Lin-Manuel Miranda will not attend the Oscars tomorrow because his wife tested positive for Covid.

Damn… how was SLJ receiving an honorary Oscar (presented by Denzel) not brought in to the main show. Now that was entertaining.

Happy to say I’ve seen 8/10 BP nominees. Didn’t see WSS or DMC. I hope CODA wins.

I'm 9/10, I haven't watched Drive my Car. The other ones are pretty underwhelming. Dune is the only one I completely liked, but it has no chance of winning. Of the rest The Power of the Dog is my favorite.
CODA was fine, but pretty superficial. The parents is the only thing that makes the film somewhat special. There is just no depth in anything in the movie. All problems are easily solved, neither the romance nor the teacher/student relationship are substantial and she sings perfectly from the beginning.

I heard a kind of cool bit of trivia for Steven Spielberg this year. With his Best Director nomination for West Side Story, he becomes the first director to receive a Best Director nomination in 6 straight decades.

1970s: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1978)
1980s: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)/E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
1990s: Schindler’s List (1993)/Saving Private Ryan (1998)
2000s: Munich (2005)
2010s: Lincoln (2012)
2020s: West Side Story (2021)

i think when you compare critical success, Pitt wins hands down and can surely be considered as big as Smith. Sure Bad Boys 2 made money, but it sucked.

No doubt. Pitt is a much better actor with better choices in movie parts (but he did make Meet Joe Black and made it three hours long). But as far a a huge “Movie Star” Will Smith is bigger. Which is what I said initially.

All this talk about movie stars and box office actually seems appropriate for a thread about the Oscars.
