Didn't watch but am catching up on all of this now. (gotta watch Coda!) By CA law, doesn't a person have to be taken into custody even if no charges are filed? (this just happened to a Seahawk a few months ago)
The elites will always come out fine, Smith's career will go on as if nothing happened.(but the excuses being made for him are just nauseating) Words can be ugly but they aren't violence.

Rock probably had a sore face for 2 or 3 minutes.
Words really can hurt you and leave permanent scars.

But the most shocking thing for me is the normalization of the violence. How someone can hit someone on national tv and then gets an standing ovation 20 minutes later.

CODA winning BP. Is this the second time a remake won BP (along with The Departed), or were there more?

i don't even know what to say at this point, but all in all, even with the gratuitous violence, the show sucked, the hosts sucked and everything in between sucked. it was predictable with no upsets or real surprises, but i am happy for the winners, especially Kotsur and CODA. very well deserved.

But I can say that the Oscars have gone through periods of disappointment before (most notably, Miramax's using the awards to promote their three star movies in the late 90's).
Off to Youtube to catchup.

I think this is the end Oscars viewing for a lot of people. I haven’t watched it regularly for years, and after what I’m reading about it here I see no reason to watch again. Most of my friends feel the same way. Our movie viewing habits aren’t even shaped that much by the winners of the awards.
Most of my friends and I agree that Summer of Soul was the best film they saw last year and it wasn’t even nominated in that category. At least it won Best Doc.

I can almost excuse the Academy for not taking immediate action last night because I’m sure everyone was in shock and didn’t really know how to handle the situation but unless some meaningful steps are taken in the next day or two to show they really don’t condone that type of behavior, I’m probably done watching the show.
I suspect it’s all going to come down to the court of public opinion in the next few days as to how people will react to this. I suspect that it will be nothing more than a couple snarky jokes at the beginning of next year’s show and that will be it.
Maybe they’ll surprise me and release a statement saying Smith is no longer welcome at the awards ceremony and a “special guest” will be arranged to present the Best Actress award next year. I’m not counting on it though.

For the show itself- it was alright. The "we don't talk about Bruno" song was weird with how much they hyped it up, and then diverted from it.
No real suprises. I thought the jokes were pretty funny.
Not sure how you cut 8 awards and still end up 30 minutes over.
Will Smith laughed at the joke at first, but then caught Jada's side-eye.

Wow, the only part of the Oscars I saw yesterday was the Bruno song that I googled to watch on Youtube, and I thought they did a solid job with the presentation of the song, but I wake up to stories about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, and I am just confused as to how this could happen. The first true return to form for the Oscar's (actual hosts, folks in the audience, song and dance numbers, etc.) since Covid and now all that most folks will remember about the Oscar's is the slap seen by world (or at least several million people, as the show's ratings are not quite DOA yet).
Sigh, I almost want to ask if Trump had anything to do with production of the show, because we all know the saying about how everything he touches turns to sheet. FYI Mods, I am just making an attempt at humor, not trying to politicize this thread, seriously, just trying to be funny. I have no desire to get banned over a comment in a thread over a show I do not watch. Lol.
Happy Monday folks!

I pretty much enjoyed all aspects of the show. Such events are never perfect, but it was generally funny and entertaining throughout, with some really emotional and well-deserved wins. The slap just catapults it up to 5/5.

Even if the slap didn't happen, it was turning out to be one of the most awkward Oscar ceremonies ever, but the wheels really started coming off after that. I was really hoping Smith wouldn't win. That would have been the ultimate comeuppance for him, but when he won, I thought maybe he had a chance to truly comment on it and smooth things over. At times, I couldn't figure out whether he was reciting the speech he already had planned - and at times realizing how hollow it sounded considering his actions minutes before - or whether he was trying to just justify things. Either way, it was cringe TV. Not good at all.

I just really hate biopics. From an acting standpoint there isn't much of a stretch (especially with still living subjects) as all you have to do is copy mannerisms and speech (makeup can take care of rest....or CGI). From a story telling standpoint there is usually nothing that intriguing, especially when you consider that they tend to leave out more negative aspects of the subject (not saying they did that with this movie but in general)

So… Riz Ahmed is an Oscar winner now. That’s cool.

In other hair-themed Oscar news;
Julia Fox’s Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2022 look was made with human hair
The “Uncut Gems” muse certainly made a statement at the 2022 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, wearing a black Han Kjobenhavn dress featuring a hand around her neck and a purse covered human hair.
