oh, well, i know she won Critics Choice, but not GG. really didn't know that she was that much in contention. thought Davis or McDormand, especially were the favs. my bad Deck. no need to get snippy.

I think Tom and Jerry had a longer run on HBO Max than Judas and Black Messiah.

Collective, which is nominated for Best Doc and International film, is now available on Hulu. This was in my top movies of last year. I consider it one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Incredible filmmaking and editing. Definitely check it out.

Damn. Another movie I want to see on Hulu. Maybe I'll finally break down and subscribe. I've been debating it for a while.

If you're mostly interested in just movies on Hulu, just get the $5.99 plan with ads since they generally only play before the movie. Use it for a month and cancel.

Hulu is better than Disney + if you like movies

Yeah, I caved and signed up. Thanks for the tip.

Hulu has always seemed to have just enough exclusive content to tempt me. Browsing around, I'm leaning toward keeping it - at least at the 5.99 plan.

re: The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread

I was thinking of cancelling but I did not finish all the movies in my watch list.

I heard the Academy is banning all zoom coverage.

If a lot of people don't show up will they be forced to use Zoom?

Re: What do you think the Oscars will look like in 2021?

Oscar attendees won't be wearing face masks during the telecast, though they will be wearing them during commercials.

Just quoting myself as I ended up being 100% right on this one occasion.

Sounds like they’re considering it a “TV Production” so they can get away with not masks. I guess technically it is but still feels like a loophole to me.

I’m not sure wearing them during commercial breaks does anything at all aside from appeasing some sort of COVID protocol rule.

I’m still not clear on WHO will be in attendance. Are they allowing medical/ first responders/ etc. in and having the nominees available virtually? The article says they’re going to rotate attendees on and out to keep the audience at 170 max capacity. I can’t see them ushering Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks out of the auditorium so someone else can take their seats. Who knows.

re: The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread

The New EW has Viola Davis on the cover and twice mentions her "record breaking performance" (on the cover and at the start of her profile) but nowhere in the article mentions what record she has broken. I'm guessing acting nominations for a black actress? Very weird to not say.

Edit : Yeah, that's it. It's on the website. I guess they realized their mistake after it went to print.

^ So who holds the previous record and how exactly has Davis “shattered” it?

It’s her fourth (Doubt - Supporting, The Help - Lead, Fences - Supporting, won).

Octavia Spencer had three Supporting Actress nods and one win.

Re: Vote for your favorite Best Picture nominee. (2021 Oscars)

It’s a very different looking telecast. It definitely feels smaller. And I’m glad they are having the presenters and audience not wear masks.

Re: Vote for your favorite Best Picture nominee. (2021 Oscars)

Looks like an unconverted dvd.
Also looks like A 2:35.1 aspect ratio.
On screen graphics are very low resolution.

Not sure what the reason is for this look..

They couldn’t get full 1080 hd cameras in there?

It's definitely an interesting look this year, although I'm not sure how well it works, it looks a lot more like the Golden Globes.

Happy for Promising Young Woman, but disappointed for Minari (eh, maybe they didn't give her script because they figure Picture, Director, and Editor awards are enough )

Re: The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread

Feels like these speeches are just hanging out in dead air, though, with the smaller crowd and lack of the big sweeping orchestra playing them off...

Also, for crying out loud, play CLIPS from the movies actors are nominated for. This is often the only way people even see some of these movies and I can't count how many movies I was introduced to after seeing an Oscar show clip. We don't need Laura Dern speechifying instead of showing us the actors work!!

Re: The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread

The energy of the telecast is very low. For casual award show watchers, this would probably be pretty boring.

Glad Kaluuya won for supporting actor. He was mesmerizing in Judas and the Black Messiah.

Re: The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread

The intro for each nominee feels like an eternity. And the acceptance speeches twice as long. I read somewhere they expect this to be the lowest rated Oscar show in history. At this rate, I can see people tuning out fast.

One of my friends said she would watch this while doing laundry....I think the laundry would be more exciting than watching this.
