The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread

Do you think the Oscars will be conducted over zoom? Or will they be held live with social distancing guidelines in the audience?

Will there be enough content to warrant a full roster of nominees?

Will Netflix sweep the Oscars, because a majority of the movies will have been streamed rather than released theatrically?

I know it's too early to tell, but we can speculate....

No Oscars in 2021. The show on Feb 27 2022 will be the next one and will include 2020 movies.

It won't be over Zoom, that's for sure. If anything it would be in a largely empty theater - no need for Seat Fillers any more. They have already said that it will almost certainly be delayed. We really need to see how Fall releases are going to go. If most prestige movies also get pushed to 2021 I wonder if they even go forward with the ceremony - there needs to be a decent selection of films to qualify.

This seems like the smart move. The Right loves to attack Hollywood for being hypocritical. The most tone deaf thing they can do is go through with an award show during the pandemic (even if a vaccine has been created by then). And no matter what safety precautions they take, they’ll still be criticized for congratulating themselves while people die.

2020 should be a wash. Whatever few quality releases are released this year should just be rolled into next year’s awards for the 2022 ceremony.

February 2021 is a LONG way away, and movies are going to start coming out again as early as July. Given that "most" (not all, of course) nominees in the past have been released in the fall, why not have a ceremony?

If nobody complained about the NFL doing a draft and awarding million dollar contracts I don''t see why anybody should complain about a Oscar ceremony. It would be a diversion from real life.

If it is a regular show I hope they get a host

Just don't get Kimmel again.

Nah, no Oscars this year. People aren’t going to go back so soon and there is no way to be safe now and foreseeable future. It’ll be streaming Oscars and Extraction will be best everything.

Guess I'm in the minority, and agree with Shannon Nut. It seems pretty clear theaters are going to be open nationwide by July with new releases coming out. Yea, maybe at limited capacity and with masks required, but they'll be open. July through December is 6 months, and most Oscar movies come out in the Fall anyway. The Oscars will proceed next year.

No Oscars needed this year. The release schedule will be sparse for the next few years. They can't even get a crew together right now to work on a movie. There won't be a glut next year because so many movies aren't going to be released on schedule. Just skip it this year and do it next year when it's hopefully a little safer.

There is SO much money from ABC to AMPAS from the Oscars telecast that there's no way they skip a year. Maybe delay it until April or May and include Q1 2021 in the eligibility period. But it will happen.

But will anyone really watch? I haven't, and don't really care to anymore. Not when every news outlet gives us "breaking news" on the newest winner.

From TV Line:

The 93rd Academy Awards, originally slated to be held Feb. 28 and air on ABC, instead are now scheduled for April 25.

The eligibility window for the 2021 Oscars, which typically runs Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 of any year, has in turn been extended through Feb. 28, 2021.

Interesting. That makes sense. I do wonder how many Oscar-worthy films will be released in Jan and Feb now.

In 2020 it was on too early but April 25 is really late and I might have to wait a couple hours since I don't want to watch it live with the afternoon sun still out after 7pm and the show starting at 5pm

All these months later and we still don't know. Are studios still planning on bringing out prestige award-contending films in the first Quarter of 2021? I haven't heard of any.

Re: What do you think the Oscars will look like in 2021?

This year's Oscars should be Your Favorite Moments in Oscars History. It would be hit movies that got awards, stars still popular today that got awards, acceptance speeches that played well, and the best jokes from the MCs. Maybe they can have an Odd Moments section with clips of Roberto Benigni saying that he wants to lie down and make love to all the audience or Brando sending a stand-in to refuse his award.

This prediction did not hold up well.

This seems the most likely unless they only invite certain categories idk

They need to at least show an "In Memoriam" tribue on whatever show they produce this year.

We've lost so many in 2020. Sir Sean Connery deserves recognition, but I wish it were applause from a live audience.
