The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread

re: The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread
Come on... you know the categories are stupid and how this game works. Neither of them were likely to get a main actor nom, so better to put them in the supporting. It is a dumb.

Cool to see Love and Monsters get a nom for vfx, I thought the fx work was surprisingly solid for a mid-budget film.

Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz were nominated for supporting actress in The Favourite. Stone has the main story of the movie and the most screen time, Colman who was nominated for Best Actress (and won), has about the same amount of screen time as Weisz. It's not the same, at all, but it seems to be getting more common.
The FYC for Judas and the Black Messiah has Lakeith Stanfield listed for Best Actor, Daniel Kaluuya and Jesse Plemons for Supporting. This was probably the work of somebody's agent since there's no way Boseman won't be getting a posthumous award.

The White Tiger gets a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay. It's a damn good movie. It's on Netflix in 4K DV / Atmos, too.

Some weird choices there. I loved Judas and the Black Messiah, but both of them for supporting? Boseman for lead? It just felt like those needed to get shuffled up.
Also, I know it's not a super popular opinion, but I wasn't a big fan of Boseman in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. I thought it was too broad, way too theatrical for me. I would have been much happier if he were nominated for Da 5 Bloods. I thought that was a much better representation of his talents.

I liked The Trial of the Chicago 7, but I thought Cohen was noticeably too old to play Abbie Hoffman, kind of like Kevin Spacey in that Bobby Darin movie.

Least happy about these nominations : The 1969 Chicago Police Department.

I find it supremely satisfying that the one nomination Mank did not get was for screenplay. Glad The White Tiger was recognized there.

Considering the year we've all been through, I'm surprised that two movies with depressing themes (The Father and Nomadland) were nominated for Best Picture.
I have seen Nomadland which is pretty good, but I don't think it's best picture worthy.

Wherever this list was copied from, they need to be consistent... keeps flipping back and forth from "Trail" to "Trial" for "The Trial of the Chicago Seven".

Feel the same way. One Night In Miami is my favourite of all the nominee's I've seen. Happy that the nomination Da 5 Bloods got was for Terence Blanchard, I've admired his scores over the years.

I’m glad to see that Leslie Odom Jr. got a supporting actor nomination. He was fantastic in One Night in Miami. I’m guessing there are rules around Hamilton being nominated for Academy Awards. It would have been interesting to see him nominated for that as well.

Yeah Hamilton was expressly ineligible for the Oscars (because it was a filmed stage production) despite being nominated for the Golden Globes.

^ Thanks. I figured it had something to do with being a filmed stage production.

Ugh, Mank. One of Fincher's worst films and a disgraceful slam to Orson Welles, of course it gets nominated.

I've seen 2 of the best picture nominations. Minari and Judas and the Black Messiah. I need to check out a few more that I have access to on streaming.
But, I have zero interest in Mank. I like Fincher, but that type of film doesn't interest me at all and it doesn't help that a lot of the comments here about it have been lukewarm.

Of the best pic nods I've seen Mank, Chicago 7 and Sound of Metal, and Chicago is probably my fave of those. Really keen to see Minari and Nomadland and Judas though, Promising and The Father less my cup of tea.

I know how the game is played, but I think it's pretty obvious that Lakieth Stanfield was the lead of that movie. As much as they play fast and loose with the category classifications, I don't recall a time when both title characters competed in the supporting category, not that I can think of many titles like that (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, McCabe & Mrs Miller, The Falcon and the Snowman, Thelma and Louise, Victoria and Abdul, The Two Pope's, When Harry Met Sally, Frost/Nixon).

I haven’t seen Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom yet so I can’t comment on the performances and by all accounts Boseman was a pretty decent guy in real life so I’m not against posthumous awards but regardless of merit, I think we all know why he was nominated (and why he’ll probably win).
