Re: The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread
There were a number of categories where I felt that all of the nominees deserved the win and any pick wouldn't be wrong, and best actor was one of those categories. I can't argue with the decision in favor of Hopkins, he was amazing in The Father.

That’s always seemed to be an issue with the Oscars. The show almost always run long, the producers are always struggling to keep the running time manageable without eliminating any of the categories or cutting speeches important segments short....Then they’ll waste time having a musical pop quiz segment, have Jimmy Kimmel bring unsuspecting movie theater going into the auditorium to gawk at the celebs, or bring out the interpretive dancers.

Last night was the least watched Oscar ceremony on record by only 9.85 million viewers down from 23.6 million viewers a year ago.

No, he already cast his new leads James Franco and Anne Hathaway.
The only thing more boring than that show was Nomadland. No stars, no music, hardly any in Memoriam, but a totally spontanous "Da Butt" with Glenn Close. The only good thing is the win for Anthony Hopkins which I didn't expect at all.

As awful as this year's Oscar show was, it at least had it's share of awkward moments, which is my favourite part every year. I doubt we'll ever see anything as amazing as the wrong movie being announced again, but this year I enjoyed:
- Best Supporting Actress Yuh-jung Youn struggling to climb the ramp to get on stage
- Daniel Kaluuya making his sister hide her face in embarrassment
- When one of the nominee would get a very soulful, meaningful introduction, and then the next person would be blown over with a quick, banal fact like "His favourite food is mac and cheese"
- During the Best Documentary winner's speech when they cut from his closeup to a side-shot of the audience, just at the moment a portly gentleman at a front table was struggling to hitch up his pants
- The tall, Kevin-from-The-Office-looking guy who was silently waving and shooting thumbs-up to the audience during the lengthy video speech
- The guy who stood there waiting anxiously for his partner to give him a turn at the mike, a whole gamut of emotions ran through his face as she went on and on and on, first he looked anxious, then angry, then about to cry. He even tried putting his hand on her back to signal her, but no good, she's still got more to say. I was sure he was going to get cut off, but then when he finally did get the mike he had nothing to say, and just fumferred around.

It'll bounce back but I'd be perfectly fine with this being the start of the death of these stupid awards shows.

The memorial segment isn't that bad if you watch it at half speed on YouTube. Although it does make Stevie Wonder sound like he's drunk.

They had a link to a webpage for the In Memorian and they wanted people to go there to learn more?
In 7 years it will be the 100 year anniversary and will people still care?

If the Razzies happened after the Oscars, the Oscars would have gotten one.
The Chadwick Boseman whining probably comes from folks who have not seen The Father.

I don’t want to turn this into a political argument but you know who “they” is. “They” are the ones who don’t seem to have a problem when Kanye, Scott Baio, Antonio Sabato Jr., Curt Schilling, Brett Favre, or Herschel Walker talk politics but all of a sudden throw a fit when “athletes” and “celebs” make a political statement.
I’ll leave it at that since this I don’t want this thread closed.

Nobody went to the movies last year.
Nothing in the Best Pictures field grossed more than $6.44m (Promising Young Woman). None of the movies really "caught on" last year in any way, shape, or form.
There was no expectation of a major red carpet.
No clips. Terrible pacing. Mildly creepy setup.
No Host. Zero energy.
This shows suck anyway, but this years definitely took the cake. They somehow tried to bank on a posthumous award going to Chadwick Boseman in a movie nobody watched despite it being on the most popular streamer out there, which in and of itself is weird. The ending was a perfect cap off to this whole thing.
Edit: And somehow this still pulled over 10m viewers. Go figure.

There were like no movies released in 2020, why would anybody care about the Oscars this year? I didn't even know they were this past weekend.

I saw one headline of “Low ratings for most diverse Oscars in history.” Sure, blame the diversity, not the fact that the movie release schedule was complete shit.

Maybe the big problem is there are not a lot of movies in the last couple of years that have critical acclaim and huge or big box office numbers or people that can't wait to watch it on streaming.
Then again i thought the Joker, The Irishman, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood fit that criteria in 2019 and the ratings were low.

I bet the NFL Draft will have bigger numbers than the Oscar's and Biden's speech tonight.

Anthony Quinn made the jump from movie stardom into TV stardom in 1971 with an hour-long drama series called "The Man and the City," in which he played the Hispanic mayor of a southwestern city. It was taken off the air after 15 episodes and Quinn lamented to the press, "If ten million people go to see one of my movies, it's a hit. But if ten million people watch my TV show, it's a flop." Granted, today ten million is now considered a very good number for regular shows, but not for typically much-higher-rated events like the Oscars.
