Ahsoka has an interesting arc through the Clone Wars series, but it seems awkward to have her be Anakin's Padawan when there was zero indication that he ever had a Padawan in the films. As I said, it makes her seem fan-ficcy. I think she would have worked better as just another Jedi and not Anakin's Padawan.

And the Mortis Gods? Yeah, that's just too much explanation for The Force. The Force works best when it's something mysterious that doesn't have a face. Or faces. The more we learn about it and quantify it -- either with midichlorians; fathers, sons, and daughters; microscopic Whills; Force Priestesses -- the smaller and more limited it seems.

I've often compared George Lucas to Gene Roddenberry. They both created really cool and immersive worlds, but never quite knew what to do with them or what worked and what didn't. Star Trek was always better the further they kept Roddenberry away from it -- see the TOS movies (V notwithstanding) and TNG.

I'd even go so far as to say that you can see the same thing with X-Files and Alien. The best X-Files episodes weren't written by Carter, and the series spent its last half -- no to mention the two season revival -- crawling up its own ass. And Ridley Scott essentially blew up the Alien mythology himself with Prometheus by explaining the Space Jockey and tying a bunch of Ancient Aliens and panspermia nonsense to the xenomorphs.

The full art that's being used for the Revenge of The Sith 20th anniversary poster is pretty cool. The guy who made it posted it on his Facebook page.

.
Add to that the Rule of Two because then you get dumb shit like Inquisitors. "we want more evil Jedi/Sith for conflict in all these hundreds of hours of additional content... but "rule of two." So here are some evil Jedi/Sith that totally have the same abilities and lightsabers but we'll just call them something else."

Explaining the Force should have ended with Midichlorians. That went over like a lead balloon so I don't know why they keep trying to explain it. The Force just is. Different Jedi and Sith can use/manipulate the force in different ways resulting in some having different powers than others. That way Vader isn't just the evil version of Obi-wan. Rey can do different things than Luke. Kylo can do different things than Vader. Sidious can do different things than Yoda. I'm good with all that, but I don't need an explanation. Some are born with it and some can learn it. That's the extent I need to know.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

Not having explanations allow for differing factions and views . . . The Rule of Two could easily be worked past that way. The Sith believed that . . . not all Dark Side users are Sith. The problem occurs when you present these things as work-arounds (well, there are these other Sith . . . ) and think every new derivative must keep blowing things up bigger (e.g., the Marvel super power problem).

The concept of Force Witches is interesting, and I really liked the basic concepts behind The Acolyte.

I'd put forth the notion that the OT was masterful because Lucas had steeped himself in mythology, storytelling, and the art behind it all. As time evolved, the creators (pick whichever ones you want) based their work on them. This is why the work of people like Ridley Scott begins to deteriorate. They are no longer incorporating feedback -- either from others or from history.

The "Rule of Two" doesn't make a lot of sense when you think about it. I guess the plan eventually worked, but it just sort of sets up a cycle of an apprentice who has to kill his master, then take on another apprentice who will eventually kill him. Can't say it's a relationship I'd want to enter into.

But they did sort of a do a workaround for the Rule of Two by introducing dark Jedi like the Inquisitors and Asajj Ventress. And it also sets the Sith up as being a particular thing that imbalances The Force in a way that other Dark Side users don't.

No, it never did. But neither do lots of other religious tenets that exist. That's why "workarounds" don't work while providing other views, interpretations, and understandings of the Force do work.

(The Rule of Two also does not work in politics, but that's for another forum.)

Specificity detracts from the Force is what I've been saying. It's not kung fu, it's not superpowers. You "train" in it through faith, not practicing your moves. Kylo Ren sees those little droplets after telepathically speaking to Rey? Mysterious, interesting. Them being a "dyad" and being able to teleport objects? A stupid asspull.

The Force already dips into Abrahamic theology with the "Chosen One" (which I think is stupid itself, but fine) and having "a will". It doesn't need the Trinity. It incorporates Taoist idea that everything good, bad, and otherwise is all part of the whole. It doesn't need celestial bureaucracy. It takes animism from Shinto and other folk religions. It doesn't need midichlorians.

Has there been any news out there for when tickets for Revenge of the Sith go on sale? We are a few weeks away and I'd like to know what theaters in my area are going to show it.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

Star Wars celebration is coming up next weekend from Japan. I follow a Star Wars Facebook group and a whole bunch of people flew out to Tokyo this week for the event. Some have never previously traveled outside of the U.S. because they are hardcore fans. The event is completely sold out now.

https://www.starwarscelebration.com/en-us.html

I know the Star Wars YouTube page has been televising it yearly. I guess a lot of focus, promotion-wise, will be on Andor season 2 and the Manalorian and Grogu movie.

Do you any of you here pay any attention to the event? Or do you just wait for announcements to come on the socials if they do. I watched the last 2 and they are kind of fun to watch, but they are all-day events. And I only catch them in bits.

As of right now, Fandango doesn't have them available yet. At least in my area.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

BFI is screening the original theatrical cut of Star Wars in their upcoming film festival:

https://www.indiewire.com/news/break...ng-1235114076/
Original 1977 ‘Star Wars’ Cut to Screen at BFI’s Film on Film Festival 2025

The rare screening of the dye transfer IB Technicolor print will open the festival, with a 35mm print of "Twin Peaks" closing it in honor of the series' 35th anniversary.

A galaxy far, far away has gotten just a little bit closer: George Lucas’ original 1977 theatrical cut of “Star Wars” is screening publicly for the first time in decades thanks to the BFI Film on Film Festival. “Star Wars” will open the 2025 festival June 12, as shown in a dye transfer IB Technicolor print first produced for the initial British release (the print is preserved in the BFI National Archive)....

Check out the full list of films at the 2025 BFI Film on Film Festival here.

That's cool but will Disney allow it?

I don't think the BFI would announce it without having the proper licensing/approval.

There may be a bit of a loophole here in that BFI is using the print it already has, so Disney doesn't have to provide a print, so Disney may be able to abide by the letter of any agreement they had with Lucas on loaning out copies of Star Wars, if any such agreement exists.

Personally, I think Disney can do what they want, and they don't really care what version is screened, but they don't see any monetary value in restoring and releasing the original cuts. But since Disney has to do nothing for this BFI screening except approve it, it got through.

Would be nice if they made a nice 4K scan of that print and press some discs.

Now that is something Disney would care about and stop. Just because Disney can't be bothered releasing discs doesn't mean they'll let anyone else do so. There's a giant difference between letting a film institute screen a copy they already have vs making more copies.

4K77 is likely the best fans are going to get bar an official release.

the more the Star Wars brand degrades the closer we are to them releasing a cleaned up version of the original unedited movie.

You all can come to my house sometime and watch the non-anamorphic SD originals from the DVD special edition extras that I found in a little free library even though Story and IBJoel don't believe me.

Heh.

That's what they all say.

There's always the Despecialized Editions from Harmy. You can pick the blu-rays at conventions, in addition to other means that no good Jedi will discuss.

I didn't mean to imply that they would do it without Disney's consent of involvement(although I did nothing to make that clear).

I’m going to go out on a limb and say if they don’t release the original cuts in 2027 (the 50th Anniversary) it’s never happening.

The idea behind the two thing was likely due to not wanting to have a bunch of power hungry Sith Lords running around at the same time. The power struggle would be insane. We see already what just one sith can accomplish or try to force onto society. But you’re right, the whole system sets up the "I must get rid of the guy in front of me if I’m to become the boss". I wish Ventress would have made her way into the prequels. Cool character.

Probably an unpopular opinion here but I don’t even care anymore. I’m fine with the special editions and enough of the changes are positive versus the few negative ones. However, I do hope they come out for the fans that want them.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

I would believe that you found a set in a little free library.

Just 2-3 years ago I was at a Savers thrift store and looking at the DVDs and saw a Star Wars trilogy set on the shelf for $3.99. I didn’t think much of it because I have the silver box DVD set and the first Blu-ray set of 1-6 but something compelled me to pick it up. Maybe it would have been a cheap, quirky set to add to my collection.

I slid the discs out and nearly had a heart attack; it was a slim case release of the limited editions, the SE version on one disc and the unaltered version on the other, for all three movies.
There was nothing on the outside to indicate it was the Limited Edition so the sorters at the store just put it out with the rest.
I ran over to my wife with that box acting like I’d found the golden ticket.

So yeah, I can believe a similar set being tossed in a little free library by somebody who didn’t know better.
