We actually had a thread that was for Future Star Wars films but I think it also wound up locked. Honestly that’s part of the problem too if you ask me. Like it or not The Last Jedi is still a hot button topic, and I don’t think locking the reviews thread was the right move.

Not trying to tell the mods how to do their job, but you want us to stay on topic of a thread, but lock us out of one designated for discussion of something that remains controversial. I agree a lot of it goes in circles, but it’s likely going to keep spilling into other threads.

I posted a link to the whiny thread. I'm not a mod so I can't move posts to there. A mod mentioned to start one, so I did. If a mod wants to edit my OP, I grant my blessing.

The thread you are referring to wasn't locked. The Rise of Skywalker one was. TLJ is not locked. You're just saying incorrect stuff now.

I feel stupid, but I literally could have sworn at one point the reviews thread was locked as well. Guess I’m wrong.

The Secret History of Star Wars

In an effort to save this thread

That article is one of the most interesting perspectives on SW and ESB I’ve read in years.

It articulates some things that I’ve felt all my life but was never really able to put into words. The massive differences between SW and ESB. The original film didn’t take itself seriously whereas the sequel takes itself very seriously. Virtually every prequel, sequel, side deal since has really been a sequel to ESB, following its tone and approach.

The hype is starting to come back, but man The Last Jedi killed my love for Star Wars. I have not been a fan of what Disney has done with the franchise. Rogue One and Solo were decent enough, but fuck the sequel trilogy so far.
I really hope The Mandalorian is good.

The Secret History of Star Wars book is really good as well (though a lot of the content is available on his website).

Easily. I haven’t heard a convincing argument as to how any of the Prequel Trilogy films are better. It has more going on and character interaction stuff than ROTJ, though I still love that one. So yeah, not a crazy notion.

I respectfully disagree as ROTJ is better than TLJ (IMO), as that was the last truly great SW movie. I know you'll respond with the Ewoks and Death Star 2, but that doesn't make it a bad movie (just inferior to ANH & ESB). ROTJ has the Throne Room Scenes which are arguably the best scenes of any SW movie (nothing in the PT or ST can even rival them). ROTJ has a great space battle and you have to think of it in the context of 1983. Jabba Palace is cool, the death of Yoda, the Sail Barge Scene, and the Bike chase on Endor. Again, not saying it's a perfect movie as ROTJ has it's flaws, but I think it's a damn good sequel. ROTJ has to literally sit next to 2 classics of it's genre, so it is easy to pick apart.

Now if you want to say that TLJ is the best SW movie since ROTJ, then you may win me over.

Edit: Now if you're talking about ROTJ SE, then I can't defend those changes. Jedi Rocks is terrible, Darth Vader NOOOOO is uneccessary, and Hayden Force Ghost looks creepy.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

Can someone post chapter stops for TLJ BD where character development is shown so I don't have to subject myself to the entire movie again? Thanks.

I agree. SW and ESB, 8/10s, all the others 5/10.

The final battle between Luke and Darth Vader made ROTJ and is probably one of the single best scenes in the entire Star Wars saga.
Jabba was a nice reveal.
Slave girl Leia is iconic.
But the acting quality took a severe drop in the third installment. It was very simplistic with Luke's going on and on about "the good," "the good side" and the Emperor just being bwhahahaa, I'm evil, do the wrong thing so you can become just like your father bwahahaha.
And Luke and Leia being brother and sister!? That ruined the whole love triangle.

TLJ has some cringe moments, but the acting by everyone is pretty solid. The story and message is done better in TLJ. DJ even gives a member of the resistance food for thought about morality. And cute animals are restricted to just being cute animals and not plushy warriors that can take down the galaxy's strongest military. And I actually like the casino scene because it world builds.

Actually, It think the bulk of the articles on that site are supplementary materiel he wrote after compiling the book. There's some retreading of facts, but it's mostly new angles on the material, like critical responses and such.
The Secret History of Star Wars

Interestingly, the author says the book came about as a result of discussions on online messaging boards.

I was one of the people he discussed with before writing the book as we were both members of www.originaltrilogy.com. Michael is a good guy and he did a lot of research but the book is slanted against Lucas as everyone he consulted at the time (mid 00’s) was a PT hater. My point is that the facts are correct but many of his observations are from an Anti-Lucas/Anti-PT point of view. You have to remember the context of that time as there was a section of the fanbase that hated Lucas just like they hate Disney now.

No doubt the book is probably inspired by George Lucas's attempts to revise history after the release of the prequels, and the PT defenders that took GL's new explanations/history of the series as gospel. Personally though, reading the book gave me the impression of more "dispelling the myth of George Lucas" than actually disparaging him in any way. I do think the work itself is even-handed.

I thought they just quit, that doesn't mean the movies are dead.

If Lucasfilm continues to mine the Skywalker time period, they need to do a Thrawn-centric movie or limited series.

Who the fuck knows. Disney and Lucasfilm aren't exactly forthcoming on what's going on behind the scenes.

If they had B&W developing something like a KOTOR trilogy, then it might still be on the table. If they just handed them a trilogy to do anything they wanted to, then whatever they were working is most likely not going to happen.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

I feel like their trilogy is dead. They were the writers, so if they're not working on it, it's not their trilogy anymore. If someone else takes their premise and runs with it, whatever was written so far is going to be rewritten to fit the new person's vision. Also, if Lucasfilm had been happy with the direction they were going at all, they would've at least put it on indefinite hiatus. The fact that it's dead means that whatever they were working didn't fit Lucasfilm's view of what the next trilogy should be.
