An interesting look at the film, just half a year after it came out:
(I suggest playing it at 1.25x or 1.5x. Dude talks slow...)

Is the video from the future? It's only been 6 months.

At least you didn't say it had been one and a half parsecs since it came out.

I’ve watched TLJ several times since the BD release. Every viewing solidifies it in my mind as the best SW film since Empire.

I’m convinced this is part of some long con.

My memory sucks, but I thought you hated it. Or was that just the Canto Bight stuff?

I actually came around on TLJ after seeing it on BluRay after I did not like it in the theater. After a few more viewings now and letting everything sink in. There are 2 ways I look at the film: Watching it as its own entity and in that context, I actually think it is a very good and entertaining film. Watching it as part of the Saga or part of The Sequel Trilogy, it just doesn't work for me.

Not taking the bait of watching it again...

I've seen it two and half times and each time it comes up as a sub-par Star Wars movie...and a sub-par space fantasy movie...for me.

I’ll agree with this. And I’ve only seen it once. After my first and only viewing in the theater I remember texting my brother saying the exact same thing, it’s the best SW since Empire. And although it kind of sounds like hyperbole all you really need to do is the math.

All the Star Wars films following Empire:
RotJ
Episodes I, II, and III
Clone Wars
The Force Awakens
Rogue One
Solo

I have yet to see Solo but I would certainly place TLJ above all those others.

That's where I am.

If you look at at it as a film, it does some interesting things and it is competantly crafted, but it's an abject failure as Star Wars Episode VIII. As far as the greater saga goes, it turns the sequel trilogy into a clusterfuck.

It's like Alien 3 in that regard. Alien 3 was, in and of itself, a good movie, but outright diasterous as the third entry in the Alien franchise.

Agreed and that's a great analogy. Oddly enough I rated TLJ higher but enjoyed Solo more.

No, I’m probably the biggest fan of TLJ here. And I’ve come around on Canto Bight as well.

Not sure I'd agree, but not sure I'd disagree. I loved it.

I can see Canto Bight fitting in the Star Wars universe. I can see the storyline they were attempting fitting into the Star Wars universe. It just didn’t work in this movie. (I’m pro-Last Jedi.)

sanctimonious tripe.

I hated it because it was boring, poorly written, and done Luke Skywalker wrong.

I think you're the second-biggest fan of TLJ here because I loved every minute of it, including Canto Bight right from the first viewing.

The Last Jedi is the first true Star Wars film.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi (R. Johnson, 2017) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Rian Johnson used cinematic technique in ways no other Star Wars movie had. Dialogue, shot composition, lighting, and mis-en-scene that both drive the plot and the themes all throughout it. All of these technique elevated the "movie" to "film" territory, for me.
