There is what? That's no defense of the hate being thrown her way, but it gets exacerbated when she feeds into it. You can't control what people say about you on social media, but you can control whether or not you respond to it.

You say there's no defense of the hate, then say she should react differently. Just ignore it? Like she has since the project was announced? Even when a hack journalist from Breitbart is actively taking part in it and sending his shitty minions at her? You think this is just on social media and doesn't spill into the real world? I'm asking because I don't understand your stance on this, not putting words in your mouth. Do you expect everyone receiving that level of vitriol to just shut up and take it?

No, she can respond however she wants. She can fight back however she sees fit. I'm just saying that when you feed the trolls on social media, things can blow up. So I should have said "you can control HOW you respond to it." Easier said than done, for sure. I'm not sure how I would respond in that situation, though. Twitter has become about the worst thing ever.
But seriously, this "don't feed the trolls" solution doesn't seem to be working, at least not anymore. We've been saying that for decades.
While I agree with you that exposing them and calling them out will obviously bring in more of them, it also has the benefit of showing regular folks (like you and I) what they're dealing with on a daily basis. It's one thing to say that it's just mean things being said, but it's another to actually experience it, non-stop, for days or weeks or months at a time, in addition to the ones who take it even further into the 'real world'.
Anyway, I just don't think Leslie Jones has done anything wrong here. If it gets more people talking about the problem, it's a net positive.

Yep, Twitter is horrible, has been from its inception.

At least we can agree on that point.

Maybe this will lead to Twitter being shut down. We can only hope!

If only the news would stop reporting Twitter stuff as news we'd be good.

That recap makes no mention of the death threats (including one in a YouTube video) or the Breitbart writer who encouraged his 337,000 followers to go after her by sharing fake tweets (where it appears she makes slurs towards Jewish people). Or that it was 14 straight hours of continuous harassment, and Twitter didn't respond until the 12th hour.
So yes. It's a short recap, indeed.

The original is one of my favorite comedies of all time. I also found this movie very funny. I thought the script was fun, the effects were great and there were enough nods to the original to keep me entertained.
I think it's being overly criticized. I'll take just one of the criticisms that's been pointed out to task, about the proton packs and what they do.
That's just one example of a criticism that isn't justified.

Not really. The original the proton packs existed because they had to capture the ghosts and wrangle them into a trap to contain them because you obviously couldn't kill them and then store them. Here there's really no purpose for the proton packs because in the finale there blowing away ghosts with proton shotguns and grenades which seems to work much better.
Spoiler:
Why should Twitter shut down? Because racist assholes can't control themselves? Why not deal with the racist assholes instead?

I learned reading People Magazine the other day that Leslie Jones is like 48 or 49 years old. Far older than I would have guessed. She's the oldest SNL hire in history. Twitter is obviously too new fangled for her.

Do any of those trolls have jobs? Do they do anything that's positive or enriching with their lives? What kind of toxic environment breeds people like that?

The amount and vindictiveness of all this racist trolling aimed at Leslie Jones was beyond abominable. All this for a fucking movie. For fucks sake...

But not surprising at all.
A lot of white people I know hold black people in contempt, but they really, really hate black women. And Leslie Jones, being large, loud, and mouthy, hits every dog whistle that sends them into a frenzy.

To me, "Black," is just a description of what someone looks like, just like blonde, brunette, or redhead. It is not an assigning of character or worth as a person.
I don't like Leslie Jones' work that I've seen, but that doesn't mean she can't give a performance that I'd like. I don't blame her for the new Ghostbusters movie. She didn't write, produce, or direct it. Sending her vile, hateful, racist messages is totally repugnant and unacceptable. As a white man I am embarrassed by behavior like that.
Actually, it makes me both sad and angry. Freaking Neanderthals.
It is so pathetic.

I don't even hate Christopher Nolan films as much as most of these misogynistic and racist assholes posting on twitter hate this film.

By the way, the most privileged group in society is NOT men, it's attractive women in the western world.
