Kimetsu no Yaiba/Demon Slayer. It's a really popular anime, probably bolstered by the fact that it's not streaming simultaneously.

If I had full efficacy with my vaccine already I probably would've taken my daughter.

it was the #4 movie worldwide last year (#2 if you count money made in 2021) and released after the pandemic started.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

It's also the highest grossing theatrical release of all time in Japan, passing Spirited Away.

I took my daughters. They liked it. I thought it was ok, but I didn't watch the anime. There really is no effort to draw in non-fans of the anime. It picks up right were the show left off and not much effort is made to explain who the characters are or what the situation is. Animation was very good though. Anime is only one season at this point and is on Netflix

Some actually big box office numbers. These are early estimates.

A quiet place part 2 is on track to make $57M this holiday weekend.

Cruella is on track to make between $27 to 30M

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Updated Estimates for AQP2 have increased to $58m+ for the 4-day, $80.5m global (12 markets). Early estimates were $17m for Cruella and $30m for AQP2.

that's $48.8m for the 3 day for AQP2, pre-pandemic estimates were at $60m for the 3 day when it was coming out in March 2020 and capacity was 100%.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

A pretty generous take, an 11m 2nd wknd is doing well? And a 60% drop for Quiet Place 2, with all of the good reviews/audience scores. This underscores what I mentioned in the other box office thread last wk, there is no going back to box office before the pandemic.

54% drop for AQP2, the Friday drop is due to it including Thursday evening grosses last week. That's a pretty standard drop but definitely worse than #1s 34% drop (which is normally what happens with sequels)

The theater is in a reboot mode right now, it's too soon to call anything about its long term recovery, they're still waiting for a current film to cross $100m domestic again (which AQP2 will do next weekend). Cruella and Conjuring are interesting since they're both streaming.

The holiday wknd threw me off as well, so yeah a pretty standard drop...and it's doing great for a mid tier film. We've got the big tests coming up with F9 and Black Widow...

Eh nevermind you were right, the current estimates are updated to a 59% drop. Though Conjuring did slightly better than estimated.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

EARLY Weekend Estimates:

1. In the Heights - $13m

3. Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do $11.3M (-53%) - Total: $45m
4. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway - $10.2m
5. Cruella - $6.8m (-38%) - Total: $56.1m
6. Spirit Untamed - $2.9m (-52%) - Total: $11.3m

A Quiet Place II is the first movie of 2021 to cross $100m domestically (on Friday), edging out GvK which is stuck at like $99m.

Yikes, the latest has In the Heights coming in at #2 with 11.4m. About the only positive thing you could say about this wknd is having four films over 10m.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I saw The Hitman Wife’s Bodyguard last week in the preview showings. While I got some entertainment out of it, I don’t think the movie has much replay or return business factor. I think it will tap out at around $35M here in the states and maybe make $70 to 75M overseas.

F9 is going to dominate next week.

Yeah, I don't see crowds going to the theaters to see this past the first weekend. At best, I'd rent it.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Good news! QP2 will likely top out at 150m, and F9 at 175m is my guess....and that paves the way for Black Widow to hit 200+ domestically. (maybe the only one this yr?) We're still likely to see a ceiling of 700m worldwide for the biggest films this year, and we'll just have to see how the marketplace adjusts going forward.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

A lot more from D+ than I would've guessed, good for Disney but not so great news for theaters. 80m opening may not get it to 200m domestically, which would be disappointing imo.

The Disney P+ number is irrelevant.
