I think the budget was something like $80 mil, but they’ve done some pretty heavy marketing, which is probably almost as much.

Harley is a secondary character to a secondary character. This was never going to be a $100M opening movie. Unless you're really into the DC lore, this wasn't going to have a big mass appeal and splashy opening like Aquaman or Wonder Woman.

DC is doing fine. Aquaman was a smash hit. Shazam made some money and was well reviewed and Joker was also a smash hit and will win some awards Sunday.

and making it PG-13 would have only pissed off the older people saying Harley's an edgy character and you can't dumb it down for the kids and masses.

E Unit

DC is about 2 for 10. Not sure it's a viable model if it can't retain moviegoers, especially if they continue to do R Rated movies. Not to mention the tons of kids who love DC characters and probably would love seeing them in a dark as hell storylines WB continues to churn out. But yes, I know the Harley movie was not meant for the younger crowds, so it won't cast the wider appeal that an Aquaman or WW does. But I guess close to breakeven is all WB is hoping for at this point.

Neither terrible or good. However, given Warner's history of being reactionary, doubtful The Suicide Squad will be rated R (as was suggested back in November).

Birds of Prey became a Margot Robbie vanity project and totally tanked it herself with one curious decision after another. Fairly disastrous for Warner, because it tarnishes the box office potential of future female-led DC projects that don't feature Wonder Woman.

We are never getting Gotham City Sirens because of this box office disaster.

Parasite opened over the weekend in the UK and is now holds the title for best opening weekend for a non-English language film, edging out Apocalypto from 13 years ago (£1,389,856 vs. £1,360,111). Worth noting, Parasite played on half the number of screens, though inflation would put the Mel Gibson flick on top. It's currently at around $175m worldwide.

I dunno. They expected $45m out of it this weekend and it pulled $33m, I'm not sure that's "box office disaster" material for a sub-$85m movie with no big draws (Quinn is a secondary character, they didn't advertise a Joker or Batman cameo, and as much as I like the cast, none of the them are big box office draws. Also it doesn't appear to feed into a bigger picture (DCEU) and the advertising has been pretty awful with no hint toward what the movie is actually about). But we'll see how it plays out in the long run.

Jim Carrey the 90's comedy superstar beat Will Ferrell the 2000's comedy box office star.

I guess there will be even fewer comedies now that Downhill finished in 10th place.

Probably goodbye to Will Ferrell as a box office draw though he has not been putting out a lot of movies in the last couple of years.

As is normal for a weekend following a holiday week, drops were a bit steeper than normal (Sunday night on Holiday weekends is typically stronger). But overall, a decent hold for Sonic, a poor opening for The Boy 2, and a proper drop off for Downhill. And Parasite should cruise by $50m in the next week. A much stronger showing for Impractical Jokers than I would have anticipated.

$40m is little low for a Pixar flick but I feel like there wasn't a ton of anticipation heading into it. They'll likely play up the COVID-19 angle. It slightly edges out The Good Dinosaur (which is Pixars lowest).

I got a email from Cinemark with their movie lineup for March and there are probably only 4 new movies coming out this month.

It seems Hollywood is releasing less movies theatrically these days.
