Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Wonder Woman broke $100m for opening weekend and looks to be landing at $101.4m (Domestic). Very impressive! I will admit to being a naysayer, but kind of regretted that once the reviews started rolling in.

It also completely suffocated Pirates of the Caribbean, which made more on Tuesday than it did on Friday, dropping it a franchise ending 65% to $21.8m.

I usually don't root for a movie when it comes to the box office, but I'm genuinely happy. Hopefully the actuals hold to that number.

Damn, WB must be shocked and thrilled about this. Wonder if it can knock out Guardians as the top summer film.

Highly unlikely. Guardians 2 made $46.5M more on its OW and has made $355M to date and will probably end around the $380M mark. WW, even with less competition (been reading the tracking on Mummy has been poor), will barely cross $300M.

Still, indeed Warner is thrilled, though not sure shocked. They knew damn well it was not going to open to $65M... Wouldn't surprise me if their internals suggested around the $100M mark.

Hopefully this will put the "a female superhero can't open a movie" nonsense to bed.

I think this particular movie has legs. Anecdotally, I've never seen so many of my female friends this excited about a superhero movie. A few are planning multiple trips.

Agreed.

Another thing, and could be just my area, but this has sold out the first three showings today and another two will sell out later.

The word of mouth, though, might give it that extra boost that other DC movies didn't get. Could be a surprise. And I'll say a surprise because I do believe people on here and from people that I talked to just didn't have too many kind words to say before it was released. I, for one, didn't see a whole lot of press to this (compared to like Spider-Man and now Thor) but this acclaim it's getting is making me want to check it out.

And with this being a success, can we FINALLY get that Black Widow film we've been wanting??? And hopefully we get that female badwoman DC film that's been discussed. Beautiful woman kicking major ass with a good script, should be easy box office gold one would think.

Not sure about the press part, but Gadot, Pine even Jenkins were on just about every talk show; and I saw a ton of a TV spots.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love it to get to the $390 range, but that is really, really, REALLY tough in the summer, even with lackluster competition. Just for comparison, the first Guardians *only* managed a 3.53x but that was in August and didn't face much, if any, competition (it's why Suicide Squad managed to do what it did in August in spite of horrible reviews). Mind you, in order for WW to get to win the summer, it needs a 3.9x multiplier. Not happening.

As for Black Widow, for w/e reason Marvel doesn't see too interested in doing one. Instead they're going with Captain Marvel as their first female led film. Could things change? Sure, but Feige has a blueprint/plan for the MCU and it doesn't seem to include BW, but with Comic Con coming up in July, I guess they could make a surprise announcement.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

$100 million is a nice opening, but it's still less than Suicide Squad's opening weekend. So it's probably going to make comparable box office to that film. WW cost about $25 million less, so Warners should be very happy, even if WW won't crack $400 million domestic/$1 billion worldwide

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Except Suicide Squad had horrible word of mouth and review scores, so it was certainly front loaded. If The Mummy gets hit hard with negative reviews this week, I could almost see Wonder Woman landing at number one again.

Wonder Woman made even more over the weekend than originally estimated. It opened not with $100.5 million, but rather with $103.1 million.

No surprise. On a box office forum everyone, or most anyway, figured Warner was overestimating the Sunday drop (26% vs 18%).

If Mummy matches current tracking ($40M) and WW's good/great WOM still holds, I can see it edging it out.

Very nice for WW; surprised it didn't make more on Saturday though. But a great hold for Sunday made up for it.

A 7.9% drop from Friday to Saturday is excellent. GOTG1 dropped 18.1%, GOTG2 8.5%

Agree, but my thinking was it would make more Saturday and drop more Sunday. Either way it is doing well.

It's all in how you calculate. Most places make note that since Friday is Thursday "Previews/Midnight" + Friday, the Friday to Saturday comparison is being misused.

For example:
Wonder Woman made $11m on Thursday and about $27.8m on Friday, that gets reported as $38.8m for "Friday". As such, it's a 7.6% drop from "Friday" to Saturday ($35.8m), when in fact it's actually a 29% gain on Saturday over Friday.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 made $17m on Thursday and about $39.1m on Friday for a total "Friday" of $56.1m, on Saturday it made $51.3m, which is actually 31.5% higher, but gets reported as 8% lower.
