Outside of a couple recent flicks, that's about the coolest top 10 ever.

The box office roared to life again...in China. Deadline reports that a Chinese flick cleared over 100 million over the past 5 days. Just imagine if President Trump took things seriously, he could have been the guy who saved Hollywood if he got American’s back to feeling comfortable seeing films in theaters. I guess Trump still has time to fix things to the point where folks feel comfortable seeing films in theater’s just in time to be re-elected but he needs to get cracking on things right now.
Liberal brains like mine would explode if Trump ends up being the guy who gets asses back in seats but hey, if he could pull that off he deserves to get re-elected. Trump should be looking at the Chinese box office and thinking to himself...hmm, I could be the man who saved Hollywood but the $64,000 question is he thinking this thought or just sees China on the news and just lets that act like a red sheet in front of a bull sending him into a rage.
Stranger things have happened, but for the above to happen the folks who kiss Trump’s rear need to be encouraging him to be the guy that saved Hollywood.

So, WB isn't releasing Tenet's numbers until Sunday... I have a feeling they are going to be below estimates. Obviously these are very shaky examples but so far Unhinged and Dark Mutants are not 'legging out'... they are dropping about as much as they would in regular times, and on a much smaller scale. Even if Tenet hits 30million for the wknd... what happens if it just crawls to 120m domestic, and only makes 350-400 million worldwide? China is already a disappointment, estimated to top out at 60m.
Worrying times for sure...

Unhinged made $9m so far which is $5m more than I would have guessed it would make during regular times. And New Mutants was a dud.
I don't think you can really speculate much on how Tenet will do at this point, its looking at a $30m opening in China and has solid word of mouth, it has also crossed $100m ww which is a decent enough start considering the circumstances.
Frankly I'm surprised so much is hinged on it since it didn't seem to have that much hype going into it - studio was banking hard on the Nolan brand, the movie itself didn't sell itself that great.

$20M for opening weekend is not good. But, I know they are severely handicapped by not having LA and New York. It's going to really need international money to break even if that's even possible. Unless WB plans to keep it in theaters long enough for LA and NY to finally open.

Yeah the 25 to 50 percent capacity is also hindering them as well. That’s a lot of ticket sales lost.

Definitely on the low end of expectations.(this is the four day total) Even with good legs, starting so low will be a real challenge...who knows, maybe it will have 8 weeks of 10m+ We'll see if WB shuffles things around some more, there's also the risk that Nov-Dec could see some setbacks and shut downs.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Whenever LA or NY theaters do open, I'm sure they will be more than happy to keep Tenet playing in multiple screens and an extended time than show classics again that would make almost no money. People who do choose to go back to the theaters now want new releases, not to see Back to the Future for the 50th time or Avengers Endgame for the 100th time. And there's very little inventory on new movies right now anyways since so many got moved to 2021.

This analyst is pretty new on the scene, (found via Box Office Reddit) he posted this info - pretty brutal numbers.
Canada (Aug 26 - Sep 2) $3.75mn
US Sneaks (Aug 31-Sep 2): $3.4mn
Thursday: $1.6mn
Friday: $2.9mn
Saturday: $3.5mn
Sunday: $3mn
Monday: $2.1mn
Total: $20.2mn
Canada: $5.9mn Approx
US: $14.3mn Approx
Counting the Thurs numbers (which normally happens) it looks like the 3day wknd is 11m.

Hopefully it gets a few more eyeballs once NY and LA open. Fun flick, but people aren't clamoring to sit inside next to strangers for 2.5 hours.

This must all be bad for theaters. I'm not sure how they can turn a profit while seating 1/6 (or whatever) of a theater.
I feel comfortable going. Just staying extra sterile. Will get packaged food, not popcorn, etc. Because movies are probably the most predominant thing in my life, I don't mind going to theaters right now.

Man, numbers are confusing these days. But here's whats available.
1. The Little Things $4.8m
2. The Croods 2 $1.84m ($43.9m cume) (+2% in attendance)
3. WW84 $1.3m ($39.2m cume)
4. The Marksman $1.25m ($7.8m cume)
5. News of the World $540k ($10.35m)
- Promising Young Woman $260k ($4.36m)
- Our Friend $135k ($446k)
Croods 2 is doing exceptional with $144m worldwide, WW84 is doing good but it could be doing better at $152m worldwide.

Avatar is now expected to become the #1 movie of all-time again thanks to a China re-release.
What was even the point of those re-release, especially right now? Would have made more sense as a pre-cursor to Avatar 2.

$19.5M for about 1600 screens is really good. I've never saw any promos or advertising for that movie either.
