Man, I had no idea King Arthur was so expensive. How do they possibly run up a budget like that without a single bankable movie star attached?

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
I'm sure quite a bit went to visual effects, production and costume designs plus the costs of any delays. Looking at Wikipedia, this was supposed to come out July 22, 2016 and got pushed back three times.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Man, already a few movies out of the gate not doing well so far this summer. King Arthur and Baywatch probably won't crack $40 million, Alien is already down to just $10 million in it's second week, and Pirates didn't even crack $80 million and is going to have a huge drop next week with WW coming out.

Usually there's a breakout comedy...wonder if it will be Rough Night this yr? Looks like the same scenario for June... first out of the gate Superhero hit (WW), a fifth pic in a series under performing (Transformers)...Mummy will probably be middle of the road. (in terms of Box Office)

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Guess we can add Alien as a bomb too domestically. King Arthur, Alien, Baywatch, Pirates, and maybe even Fate of the Furious won't make it's budget back in the US. Not a good start to summer.

Pirates looks to be correcting upward which bodes well for it having some reasonable legs (usually correlates to decent word of mouth)

Doubt Universal is crying. Movie crossed $1B worldwide. Plus, get used to studios counting on the overseas market to make a profit (Pirates 5 has already made $208M OS), domestic just isn't as strong as it once was.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
The metric of a movie needing to match its budget, domestically, to not be considered a bomb doesn't really apply in this day and age, but it's still a benchmark.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Domestic is still strong. Look at Beauty and the Beast as well as Guardians. Domestic just doesn't fall for the same BS anymore like overseas continues to do it looks like. I've heard that the overseas cut just isn't that good compared to domestic. I'll be curious how much money the production/studio company gets compared to the domestic side. I'll be curious how profitable this new Furious movie is when you factor in the marketing and everything else. For a budget of $250M w/o including marketing, how do some of these movies even make a nice profit?

Pirates V is up to $325m worldwide, doing particularly strong business in China, South Korea and Russia.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Don't kid yourselves about domestic takes not being important to the studios. It is, but for a different reason.
If that trend of dropping profits continues you would see theater owners start bouncing back against the studios to change the % takes, the same way Disney has been asking more from them to show certain Marvel films.

EDIT: Nevermind, it looks like it landed at number 11 last week, not 10. It looks like Fate of the Furious held the 10 spot with about $30K more than Beauty and the Beast.

It's also kinda cool seeing Beauty and the Beast hanging in the top 10 with the Blu Ray coming out next week. Has that ever happened before? Has a movie come out on DVD or Blu Ray while still being in the top 10?

$11m Thursday Previews for Wonder Woman. Early tracking had this as $65m - $70m (per Warner), it seems the good reviews will boost it higher.
That's a record for a female directed movie.

Will WB and Hollywood in general take note? Probably not. But I'm glad Jenkins was responsible for this success. Now will it have legs (so to speak)?

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
It's now looking like $86m - $95m for the weekend, likely between Doctor Strange ($85m) and Guardians 1 ($94.3m)
Captain Underpants is doing quite well so far and looks like it'll pull about $24m for the weekend.
Others:
Pirates 5 estimated $22.5m for the weekend (-64%, $115.5m total)
Guardians 2 estimated $11.5m for the weekend (-45%, $357.2m total)
Baywatch $7.5m (-59%, $40.7m total)
I actually think they're low across the board on their estimates for this weekend, but we shall see.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Tracking was mostly pre-reviews. The hype, imo, was mixed until it flat out cleaned up critically.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Like a Pixar movie? Not quite, although I think it'll be closer to $70 mil. Talking to co-workers today, a couple of comments stuck out when discussing WW - one was "I'm a bit tired of the 120th superhero movie, but I'm taking my kid because she wants to see it" (as told by a guy), to "This is the same stuff as the last Batman-Superman movie, right?" (as told by a woman).
I'm starting to think as great as it is to see a stong female action movie that has been made well with a good story, there's the DC universe stigma that has penetrated to the common viewer, skewing/dulling their wanting to see this. But if it's a family with girls (or just kids), it'll prompt more interest. Another big issue is that if....IF DC starts putting out good movies, Marvel got nearly a decade of superhero universe movies ahead of them. There will eventually be a breaking point. DC started way too late, and basically screwed up any chance to get on the level as Marvel. The Hollywood market is over saturated with these movies.
