Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is up to ~$605,400,000 worldwide. It went past MI8 this weekend (Superman is the next one at $615,636,363). It will likely continue to screen domestically until Sony/Crunchyroll releases Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc (October 24). I wouldn't rule out $1 billion if it screens in China.

It looks like the Taylor Swift documentary will be no. 1 this weekend with around $30 to 32M
The Smashing Machine looks like a flop with around $6M

Smashing Machine didn't do so hot, Swift killed it as usual, One Battle had a decent hold and crossed $100m worldwide. I'm curious if the low pull for the Avatar sequel rerelease is a bad omen for #3.

3M for a movie that’s 3 years old, has been on digital and physical media and has already made over 2.3 billion.
I wouldn’t think too hard into it.

Yeah, only three years is really short for a rerelease

Speaking of re-release, Perfect Blue performed very well for an anime release (4K restoration in standard screenings): $711,695 (471 theaters). This is GKID's 3rd release for the movie. It also outperformed the 1st release: $446,062 (491 theaters). https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl635731969/
And for the curious, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is up to ~$757,633,973 worldwide (went past How to Train Your Dragon and F1) https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/world/

Taylor Swift Smashes the Machine! The studios are upset with her for beating them at their own game.
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/05/b...ox-office.html
Some studio executives were annoyed that she dropped “The Official Release Party” on the theatrical release schedule with only two weeks notice. She also managed to fill a lot of seats with almost no marketing, relying nearly entirely on her own social media feeds and coverage by the news media. Studios spend tens of millions of dollars on promotional campaigns for wide-release movies.
Taylor Swift’s ‘Showgirl’ Promotional Film Collects $33 Million
“The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” drastically outperformed “The Smashing Machine,” a vehicle for Dwayne Johnson, known to fans as the Rock.
Taylor Swift pulverized the Rock at the weekend box office.
“The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,” essentially an 89-minute commercial for Ms. Swift’s latest album, sold an estimated $33 million in tickets at cinemas in the United States and Canada from Friday through Sunday, according to Comscore, which compiles box office data. Less a movie than a collection of bonus features on a DVD, “The Official Release Party” played in 3,702 theaters and was easily No. 1.
The audience for the not-quite-a-movie was roughly 88 percent female and 70 percent white, according to PostTrak, a film industry research service. Critics did not review “The Official Release Party,” but Ms. Swift’s fans loved what they saw. They gave it an A+ grade in CinemaScore exit polls. (Ms. Swift did not disclose how much she spent to make “The Official Release Party,” which collected an additional $13 million overseas.)
Ms. Swift’s return to theaters — her concert documentary “The Eras Tour” was a top ticket seller in 2023 — siphoned attention away from Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” (Warner Bros.), which fell to second place in its second weekend, collecting an estimated $11.1 million, for a new domestic total of $42.8 million.
“The Smashing Machine,” an A24 sports drama starring Dwayne Johnson, the former professional wrestler who is known to fans as the Rock, came in a weak third. The film collected about $6 million in wide release and cost $40 million to make, not including marketing.
A24 had been promoting “The Smashing Machine” for months, in part by aggressively positioning Mr. Johnson as a possible Oscar nominee. Reviews have been warm. Ticket buyers gave the film a B-minus grade in CinemaScore exit polls.
A24 said in a statement on Sunday that the film, co-starring Emily Blunt and directed by Benny Safdie, “stands as a creative achievement that will resonate far beyond opening weekend.”
Ms. Swift’s cinematic stunt — she said “The Official Release Party” would only play for one weekend — was a surprise win for theater owners, many of whom are still trying to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Multiplexes in the United States and Canada had their worst summer since 1981, after adjusting for inflation and excluding the pandemic years, when many theaters were closed for long periods.
But Ms. Swift’s movie was less enthusiastically received in Hollywood. Some studio executives were annoyed that she dropped “The Official Release Party” on the theatrical release schedule with only two weeks notice. She also managed to fill a lot of seats with almost no marketing, relying nearly entirely on her own social media feeds and coverage by the news media. They both were on a comparable number of screens. It wasn't like Taylor took screens (or that many) away from Smashing Machine. I don't see that much crossover between the two films. Don't think Smashing Machine would have done much better on it's own. Unless movie goers were staying away from the whole spectacle of swifties taking over the lobby all weekend.
Hollywood execs knew her album was coming out and she could very easily do something like this.

Not a very impressive debut for Tron, though I can't say I'm surprised there

Wow, Kiss of the Spiderwoman got absolutely pummeled. Even in limited release and almost no marketing money, those numbers are absolutely horrendous. There are no spins, that fucking sucks.
Probably didn't help that Lionsgate was giving Fandango free promo codes to see it. That's how I saw it this weekend.
And Smashing Machine was also a massive flop as well.
This is really a crappy weekend for box office.

Lionsgate is a distributor where movies go to die at the box office. I think they are having cashflow problems and spending virtually no money on advertising theatrical releases.

However, for me, the two sequels were bonuses that I didn't expect, so I'm glad we got them. Tron Ares is a fun movie that I will definitely buy on Blu Ray.

Given how far apart Tron sequels have been, I'm not sure I'd be alive for the next one if they did make it.

Anime continues cleaning up at the BO while studios continue to struggle reading audiences. Hohumm opening for Shelby Oaks ($1.4m budget, but with a release that wide I assume more was expected there) and a poor showing for the $55m Springsteen. Decent opening for the $30m budgeted Regretting You.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Regretting You had a decent crowd today at a premium Dolby showing, so I imagine that the weekend gross will be higher when the final totals are reported tomorrow, probably surpassing Black Phone 2. I did feel a little out of place, reminded me of when I went to a sold out Sinners and I stood out quite a bit. This time the audience was mostly teen girls. I don't see an official thread for it, but the movie was good if a predictable, hit the emotional cues as needed throughout to make you tear up. I was reminded how bad a movie like Big Bold Beautiful Journey was when it regularly missed getting emotion out of what should have been obvious touching scenes.

Sony's next anime film is Scarlet (directed by Mamoru Hosoda). It's planned for early 2026 (delayed from December 12). There is no known Crunchyroll involvement with this one.

I'm surprised at how many of these anime movies seemingly show up out of nowhere to take over the premium screens. (to my annoyance as I'm not into them) Overall it's been a pretty ho hum October, But looking forward to checking out Back to the Future in it's one(!) time on Imax this Friday. Zootopia 2 and Wicked 2 should inject some life back into the box office for November. I don't see Predator Badlands and Running Man moving the needle much past their limited genre appeal.
