The Dark Knight Rises - 3.5/5

After 8 years in seclusion, Batman resurfaces to take on an enemy that is even more dangerous than the Joker. Bane and his band of mercenaries plan to fulfill Ra's Al Ghul's prophecy of burning down Gotham City. Fitting sequel to The Dark Knight but not as good. Thought it was a little too long with too many subplots and of course there is no Heath Ledger.

Mask of the Phantasm and Return of the Joker need more love.

That's The Way Of The World (4/5)

The discussion about Edgar Wright and Ant-man made it seem like a good opportunity to finally watch this. Harvey Keitel plays a record producer who is forced to watch his record company marginalize the production of an album with a promising group (played by Earth, Wind, And Fire) to concentrate on massaging the sound of a new, pretty awful "family singing group" the company has just signed to compete with other family singing groups that are currently in vogue. It's not necessarily a new story about the conflict between art and commerce, but Keitel is great to watch as the consummate professional artist who has to navigate between the two poles- and the story is well paced with a strong, entertaining finish.
Well worth tracking down.

Ivan the Terrible, Part 1- More politically dubious, visually stunning, cinematically stylish propaganda fare from Eisenstein. Not as kinetic as some of his previous work, the largely interior setting becoming a bit claustrophobic about a third of the way through. Still, as pure cinema, it's stunning to behold, even when the narrative falters.

Edge of Tomorrow- Derivative but fun Tom Cruise sci-fi action flick doesn't reinvent the wheel, but is solid, functional entertainment with a nice edge of wry humor. Nothing inspired, but lots of fun. Bill Paxton steals the show as usual. An entertaining mishmash of genre movies past.

The Swimmer.

Burt Lancaster decides to swim back to his house via all of his neighbor's pools, interacting with them along the way. It's a bit deeper than that but that's the basic premise. Very interesting film.

Re: Last movie you watched

Ravenous - I know this film was received poorly upon release, but has garnered a cult following in the years since. Seeing it for the first time yesterday, I have to side with the critics. Nice snowy scenery, but a fairly forgettable cannibalism driven story. The "black comedy" aspect I'd heard about was lacking -- other than the incongruous electric keyboard driven score, which ended up being the most memorable aspect of the entire film.

Strange Days - Kathryn Bigelow is a damn fine director. The script (co-written by James Cameron) offers up an interesting take on the techno-thriller genre. An ambitious idea, but feels a tad dated by today's standards. The story showed promise, but it ended up being a more conventional film then I had expected. I wouldn't have minded if the film was morally ambiguous -- darker, messier. Having every plot point tied-up in a pretty bow by the end left me slightly disappointed.

The People vs. George Lucas - I thought this might be a scathing critique of the man and his constant tinkering, or perhaps a more balanced look into the love/hate relationship of a large segment of Lucas' fanbase. Unfortunately, the documentary offers little new or enlightening content for dyed in the wool Star Wars fans... more like a CliffsNotes version of the same ground covered in every Star Wars message board for the last fifteen years.

Oddly this is the only entry in that series where the characters don't feel one dimensional to me. In fact, it's the only entry that actually seems to have any character for the title character at all.
