Zift - 3.5/5

Bulgarian neo-noir/black comedy about a fighter who after taking the fall for a murder he did not commit in the 1940's is released from prison almost 20 years later.
Once out he must deal with a new Bulgaria under communism, a wife that he left behind and his former partners in crime who have a score to settle.
Good film that I feel could of been better if it would have explored more of how Bulgaria was under communism than just using it for a setting.

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)

This movie is a terrorist attack against cinema. I liked Alien vs. Predator quite a bit and I'll defend it any day against the naysayers, but I couldn't say anything good about the sequel if someone forced me to at gunpoint. The characters are the most unlikable bunch of twats I've ever seen in a movie; the "bad" ones got what was coming to them but I wanted the "good" ones dead too, usually within 30 seconds of them being introduced. As for the action scenes, 70% of them are too dark to see anything, and the 30% that I could see were shot and edited so incompetently that I still couldn't tell what the fuck was going on. Calling Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem a terrible sequel to a good Paul W. S. Anderson movie would be an insult to Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Blue Ruin - 8.5/10
Low budget revenge thriller with a less than competent protagonist. Very well made and, at around 90 minutes, you won't get bored. And not a traditional Hollywood ending.

Plastic - 5.5/10
A British caper/con movie that lacked the finesse of many others that I've seen and mostly featured youthful/eye-candy actors. You kind of knew who'd make it and who wouldn't but it lacked the necessary depth and twists and turns to really succeed. An odd mixture of gloss and grit.

Life In Flight - 1.5/5

A New York yuppie architect who seems to have it all realizes he doesn't when he meets someone with whom he can connect.
Another film about people with money bitching about how miserable their lives are. Poor babies, go cry somewhere else.

In the Mouth of Madness - 4.5/5

When a best-selling author goes missing, an investigator for an insurance company tries to track him down. On his search he enters a terrifying world which seems like is right out of one of the author's novels. Creepy, twisted and the last great film from John Carpenter.

Yeah, whatever is wrong with AVP 1, it's Shakespeare compared to the horrible second installment. Apparently the two biggest movie monsters can't command good screenwriters or directors.

Kiss of the Damned - 2.5/5

A writer falls in love with a woman who is a vampire. He lets her turn him so that he can be with her forever. All is well until the woman's mischievous younger sister shows up to turn their world upside down. Not a bad film but also not what I expected.

Re: Last movie you watched

Midnight Movies: From the Margin to the Mainstream- Wonderfully affectionate documentary about the midnight movie experience in the 70s and 80s as popularized by the Elgin theater and others when you had to track down 35mm screening in the pre-DCP days. A fascinating look at how cinema brought together various subcultures and at artists working on the fringes of the system, the communal aspect of filmgoing and the magic of being in a cinema with others, a magic which has all-but disappeared in the age of YouTube and home video. Great stuff.

Indie Sex- Interesting but scattershot documentary about sex in cinema, told primarily by various film critics and handful of filmmakers. Some interesting material, but the subject is so broad and the documentary doesn't entirely find a focus.

Kings of Summer. Great flick... I have not enjoyed a blind-buy movie that much in years.

New Captain America. Best Marvel super-hero movie since Avengers. I have a rough time deciding on if it is better than Avengers and the first Iron Man. All three are very close in quality.

Rocky (1976)
Rocky II (1979)
Rocky III (1982)

It's amazing how quickly this series went from fairly low-key to bombastic and ridiculous. It feels like there should be about four movies in between Rocky II and Rocky III. It's like jumping from Batman to Batman & Robin, or from Pink Floyd's first album to The Wall.

The Wall is a great album, and wait until you see how cartoony IV is.

Yeah, I'm certainly not comparing The Wall to Batman & Robin or even Rocky III in terms of quality, only that jumping from Rocky II to Rocky III is almost as jarring as going from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn to The Wall. It seriously feels like there should be at least two movies between Rocky II and Rocky III. The 1980s hit this series like a Mack truck.

And I'm well aware of how silly Rocky IV is. I've seen all six movies, several of them many times over. I'm just blowing through them all right now in a marathon. I've been making an effort lately to actually watch the DVDs and Blu-rays that I buy, not long after buying them rather than letting them sit on a shelf for months (as is my usual custom), and I recently got the Rocky Heavyweight Collection Blu-ray set.

Next up after Rocky is Pirates of the Caribbean, none of which I've seen.
