The Monuments Men (2013)
Didn't care for it first time around but on second viewing, found this quite interesting. Based on a true story of army brigade which during WW2 was tasked to protect, find and retrieve stolen art works from retreating german troops. Could have done with a tighter script (less dispersed characters) but still fine.

Usually a movie I would not like but this was alright.
Sterling K Brown before he hit it big played a small role as Eva Mendes husband.

It had some funny moments but wasted its potential with that cast.

Lucky - 4/5
After collapsing in his house and winding up in the doctor's office, a 90-year-old nonbeliever starts reflecting on his own mortality. Besides the fact that Harry Dean Stanton & David Lynch are in it, it reminded me in some ways of The Straight Story. A very good film and fitting farewell performance by the late great Harry Dean Stanton.

Tag (2018) - Fun comedy excelling due to the ensemble rather than the material. Would make for a great double-header with Game Night. 3.75/5

Maybe Steve Martin has some pedo fantasies since he wrote this though maybe Danes was in her mid to late 20's?

Mortal Kombat - Netflix. Forgot how much fun this film was when I saw it in theaters, a rare time I did a midnight showing back in the day. Also, my bro in law received a credit on this film so that is cool beans.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Saw this in Imax, with the 50th anniversary restored version. Completely awesome and still impressive sfx-wise and direction-wise. Just a few things were a bit of a miss (Poole's death, the costumes in the space station, in one - and only one - shot of the apemen we see the actor's skin near the eyes beneath the mask), but the rest is completely on the dot. Visionnary. I can only imagine in 1968 people sitting through the last 15-minutes of mind-boggling images!
on a sadder note the egomaniac Kubrick took the Oscar (his only one) for the special effects 'directed and conceived by' but in truth it was a team of four, including Douglas Trumbull, that really did all the conceiving and directing!

Blindspotting (2018)
While not every aspect of the film worked well, Daveed Diggs & Rafael Casal were fantastic in this.
Definitely one of my favorite films released this year.

Supergirl (1984) — Yeah, it's pretty bad but had moments that I appreciated, particularly the sequence in the Phantom Zone and Helen Slater, despite being saddled with some awful dialogue, was utterly charming (can't say the same for Hart Bochner who had the charisma of a block of wood) and at least Faye Dunaway camped it up know what kind of a schlock movie she was in. Another nice touch was at the beginning when, over a radio, it's explained why Superman was absent. 2.75/5

The Garlock Incident (2012)
Low-Budget Found Footage film written by Ana Lily Amirpour.
The concept was intriguing (though not original) but nothing interesting happens in the entirety film. Moments intended to shock me, came off extremely boring.

Skyscraper. basically just another Rock movie, but i didnt hate it. its a good turn off the brain movie
Patch Adams. I've loved this since it first came out but in the years since I've read alot of this movie isnt factual at all. (exp his girlfriend in real life was never murdered) but its still a fantastic movie 5/5
Phantasm - my second time seeing this one. While alot of it looks dated effects wise but its creepy and weird and makes me what to move onto the second third and fourth films, 5 was just.....not the same

I missed Fathom Events' recent Anniversary Screening of the film, so I decided to re-visit it after a long time away.

Invisible Man (1933)
Still awesome almost a century later. The sfx are impressive, and the character is creepy enough. James Whale was THE director for those monster movies.

Isle of Dogs (2018)
Saw this at the theater. Enjoyed it (as with all Wes Anderson films) but plot was a bit too complex. Plus the fact that some characters speak japanese and some english (plus we saw acopy subtitled in french!) was a bit demanding at times. I much prefered Fantastic Mr Fox which was taken from a book by Roald Dahl and had a slicker script/story. Still, fun and different.

Je vais mieux (2018) (I feel better)
Saw this at the cinéma. Light and sympathetical french comedy about an architect who strains his back and learns that it might be psychosomatic. His shrink suggests as a cure that he stops being too nice all the time and stops groveling and starts saying what he really thinks. It works well for him but all his environment is quite taken aback by this new straightforward persona. Amusing.

Our Kind of Traitor (2016)
Nice Brit film adapted from John LeCarré. A school teacher and his wife, while on holiday in Morocco befriend a russian mafia accountant who then asks for their help getting in touch with MI-6. What should have been a simple task snowballs into a James Bond-esque series of adventures.
Well-paced and written.

Six-String Samurai (1998)
A clear case of form over content. NIcely-shot, slick but pretty empty script-wise. In a distopian future, the Soviets have conquered America and only Las Vegas and its King (Elvis, of course) still resists. When the King dies, canditates from all over the States try to reach Vegas for the replacement tryouts. One particular warrior makes his way, one silly sword-fight after another to try and reach the kingdom.
Basically one and a half hours of the main character fighting all sorts of bizarre foes (like Communist Elvises, Spacemen, Death itself, etc.) with Elvis-like music in the background. Not unsufferable and even watchable but very empty.
