Mississippi Grind - 3.5/5
Character study of two gamblers who become friends and decide to make some big money by hitting the road. Good film that mostly relies on the leads played by Ben Mendelsohn & Ryan Reynolds in what IMO are their best roles to date.

October Sky...1st time viewing. what a wonderful, wonderful movie. i don't watch many inspirational, PG movies (like my edge), but so good. ranks up there with the best of the inspirational movie genre. had all the tropes of an old timey movie, being 1957 and all, the authenticity, the dialogue, the actors, it all worked so well. such a well done, feel good movie. and that it was based on a true story and Homer's book made it all that more goosebumpy. had them and a smile on the whole time.

Being a remake of a remake, it should come as no surprise we've seen the plot before. Clint Eastwood did it a couple times. A small town in the middle of nowhere is run and terrorized by the greedy mining company. Amazingly accurate shooting from a moving horse. Men falling off roofs and thrown out windows. Pretty cliché.
But if they didn't pull off a decent piece of entertainment. I actually enjoyed it. Might even consider owning it one day if I find it in the dump bin.
Sorry to Matt Bomer but he is just way too pretty to be in a western. He looked out of place no matter how much they tried to dirty him up. Haley Bennett who played his wife did well as the confident and defiant, good shooting townswoman who has had enough and sets the wheels in motion.

John Wick 2 They ran out of ways to kill guys. Plenty of action and wooden dialogue, exactly what you would expect from a John Wick movie. The nice thing about this movie is that Keanu Reeves is a competitive shooter and does his own stunts. He also frequently runs out of bullets. So both of those adds realism. Of course then he falls down 3 flights of stone stairs and gets stabbed after having been hit by a car and he pops right back up, so the movie isn't a total slave to realism.
I think 20 guys were killed before the credits so don't expect too much character development and you'll be fine.

Will admit to having preconceived notions based on previous reviews. It was entertaining as they all are. The Vegas climax was huge and well done. Most of the movie was a "been there, done that" atmosphere. The addition of Alicia Vikander was interesting although I will admit as others online have written, she did look very young for that job. I'll stick with the first three. He seemed more interesting when he had no idea who he was or what was going on and he just worked from instinct.

Manchester By The Sea...a silent masterpiece.
The Girl on the Train...well, i saw the whole thing which i guess is something, but this was not a well done movie and doesn't hold a candle to the captivating Gone Girl. Emily Blunt is fine and i like her in most things, but this was so blah and everything was so uninteresting and finding out the pieces and seeing the twist a mile away didn't help any.

Billy Lynne's Long Halftime Walk...didn't hate it, but could have been done better. PTSD is more than that and Lee made it too stylized. Alwyn was good as Billy. Even Stewart didn't bother me. Hedlund didn't impress me and found him too stiff. That Leigh chick, the cheerleader is so cute.
This should have been more emotional. The only emotional moment was Billy and sister's hug at end. Dialogue seemed stilted as well. Didn't feel like an Ang Lee movie. And don't know what the hoopla over video is, unless you can't see it on regular bluray. Either way, just look ok and filmic.
Wanted to have a better time with this movie, but not sorry I saw it.
