We Are Still Here - 2/5

After the loss of their son, a middle aged couple decide to get a fresh start by moving from the city to an old house in the snowy country. After strange things start occurring, they invite their psychic friend and her husband over to find out if their son is trying to communicate with them. I was enjoying the first half for the minimalist creepy slow burn atmospherics found in ghost films of the 70's like The Changeling and Burnt Offerings. Then the second half does a complete 180 by turning into a predictable gore fest and ruins what came before.

Funny movie. Had some good laughs. I will say that F*ck can be funny if used in the right context. I thought Melissa McCarthy's profanity in The Heat was hilarious. However what makes it so funny is the contrast with Bullock's prim and proper character. If too many characters are all throwing the word around constantly, it stops being funny. I don't know how many f-bombs were dropped in this but they relied on it way too much. All in all a good watch. Applegate was very good as the bitch in charge of the PTA making Mila's life hell. Just tiresome with the propensity to say fuck every other word.

Under the Shadow - 4/5

During the war between Iran and Iraq, a doctor is drafted into the army leaving behind his wife and daughter in their Tehran apartment. After the building is struck by a missile strange things start to happen. Are there supernatural forces at play or do the strange occurrences represent the oppressive nature of a woman living in a war torn theocratic society? Another good international horror film that doesn't insult the intelligence.

The Shallows Ryan Reynolds is one lucky man. Blake Lively is a good looking lady. That being said, this movie was like one scene from JAWS extended into a feature length film.

Silence (2017)

2 hour and 41 minute movie about religious persecution in feudal Japan.

Beautifully filmed, but very long and sometimes tedious to watch. This movie is definitely not for general audiences.

Would never watch this again let alone buy it.

Just the run time would make me not want to see this movie. Even some of the war movies which I love, I rarely watch because of the >150 min. run times. I remember taking a new girlfriend, who I eventually married several years later, to see REDS. Even with an intermission I couldn't wait to get out of there.

Hannibal - 1.5/5

In between the less than mediocre Gladiator and the sabre-rattling garbage that was Black Hawk Down, Ridley Scott made this mess. After watching stuff like this, it makes me wonder why Ridley Scott is cosidered one of the greatest directors of all time. Compared to Michael Mann's excellent Manhunter and Jonathan Demme's horror masterpiece The Silence of the Lambs, this is one giant embarrassment. Steve Zaillian was hired to do a re-write of the original script by David Mamet, which was rejected. If what we saw on film is supposed to be a huge improvement on what David Mamet wrote, then someone is either incompetent or has played a very cruel joke, and I have a feeling I know who that Sir is.

Ridley's made at least one bad for every two good, though I don't agree with you on the two you've cited. I never warmed up to "Hannibal", although I didn't care for the book either, and I had really enjoyed Harris's other novels.
I know they were trying to tailor the script to get Jodie Foster on board, and I believe she had a problem with the last part of novel, since Clarice essentially becomes Lector's companion, similar to way Gillian Anderson's character was used in the TV series. Obviously, they didn't get her on board.
