"Blood Father".
Mel Gibson is a troubled ex-con whose screwed-up runaway daughter returns trailed by a bunch of killers. Mel tries to save her, and hi-jinks ensue.
This is a tough little thriller, -it's relatively short and seems low budget, -but what makes it work is Mel. Say what you will about Gibson's off-screen activities, he's still got a dynamic presence and he's really good here

The Monster - low budget monster movie starring Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks). Effective at times, but overall very unoriginal. Nothing here you haven't seen done better before. The climax is pretty bad.

Compulsion - 3.5/5
Two sociopathic graduate school students from wealthy families put their intelligence to the test by planning to commit the perfect murder. Based on the 1924 Chicago murder trial of Leopold and Loeb. A flawed film that is carried by excellent performances from Dean Stockwell, Bradford Dillman and Orson Welles.

Blackhat - 4/5
In order to find the cybercriminals who hacked into a Chinese nuclear power plant and the Chicago stock exchange, an infamous hacker is released from prison to assist the FBI. If the criminals are apprehended, he will have his sentence commuted and become a free man. Another good film from Michael Mann with breathtaking cinematography and some of the most realistic gunplay like no other can do.

Wilby Wonderful - 3/5
Indie Comedy/Drama about a day in the dysfunctional interlinked lives of several people who live on a small Canadian island. N
ot very original, but some of the performances are pretty good.

Nighthawks...loved it. The sense of tension and grit. Of course, the end was obvious but the tension was still palpable. Reminded me a little of a Freidkin film, in look and feel with the international scenes. Really good role for Stallone and I wish he made more like this, Copland, but he just made movies that suited him in over-the-top action. Too bad. And when wasn't Rutger Hauer the quintessential 80's bad guy? He's so bad ass.

Lost in the Pacific (2016)
A "Blockbuster" movie from mainland China. Reportedly cost $10M to make. Stars Brandon Routh from Superman Returns and Legends of Tomorrow.
Embarrassingly bad. It's SyFy channel production value and I couldn't believe the main antagonist of this movie was:
Spoiler:
It's currently available on demand here in the States. 100% skip.

Just pure action and eye candy entertainment. Nothing more. If you're not a fan of Diesel or the 1st movie, it's probably not for you.

Kicks (2016)...this was the straight dope. In fact, I liked it better than Dope. This was gritty and surreal. The kids were just fantastic, you'd have no idea they were actors. Had grit, heart, morality. Not bad at all.

Ouija: Origin of Evil...not half bad once it gets going after the 40 minute mark. Surprised me. No real jump scares or anything, but it was pretty creepy and the ambiance created was well done.
