Rituals (1977)
Fantastic low-budget backwoods killer flick starring Hal Holbrook. Five doctors go into the woods for a six-day getaway and a disfigured killer fucks with them. A lot. Powerful film and Holbrook's performance is exemplary. Loved it.

Standard Operating Procedure - 3.5/5
Disturbing Errol Morris documentary about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers in Abu Ghraib. Could have dug further to uncover those higher on the chain of command who gave the orders and were never held accountable.

What if Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket was a music professor and Daniel-san from the Karate Kid was a drummer?
What if they were involved in a sadomasochistic in the classroom student - teacher relationship?

I would say its better than the second one but the bar was set pretty low. An OK rental but no interest in ever revisiting.

House of Wax- Joel Silver's remake spate continued in 2005 with this retelling of yet another horror classic with more sick gore, hip young stars, and sickly green colors. Not terrible as far as these things go-audiences seemed to find Paris Hilton getting a spear through the head to be immensely satisfying, it was featured in some marketing campaigns-but it's mostly dull. The technical elements are strong-some neat production design, great KNB makeup, some moody cinematography-but it doesn't feel very unified, a by-the-numbers splatter film affair, the one moment that's somewhat inspired is the big and expensive final set piece, but it's mostly just sickly gore largely lacking in purpose and annoying characters-stop running up the stairs to get away from people! A decent time-waster, but not much else.
The Others- Alejandro Amenabar's immensely stylish ghost story taps into guilt, pain, and loss like all good ghost stories do. It's extremely classy and very handsomely made, special kudos to DP Javier Aguirresarobe for the stunning lighting which is worked into the plot. It's moody and beautiful, and intelligently written with a nicely classy European sensibility, though there aren't many scares. But it's not a film concerned with making you jump out of your seat as much as it is being moving and sad, and it does that well, even if the twist ending is a bit of a one-trick pony. Beautifully shot, it bears repeating, and well-acted, and well-written to boot. A nicely smart horror film.

Life Partners (2014)
Low budget indie with Gillian Jacobs from Community and Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl. It's about a lesbian (Meester) and her straight best friend (Jacobs) suffer tension in their friendship after Jacobs character meets and falls in love with Adam Brody's character.
Watched this with some free credits from Cinema Now. It's a decent time waster. it was also just posted to Netflix.
Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
Also watched this via Cinema Now. Long and bloated story about Young Moses (Christian Bale)
The visual effects were amazing, but this is not the kind of movie I would ever re-visit. Overall, it was better than The Counselor, which I hated.

Comet - Romantic drama about two completely unlikable characters (played by Justin Long and Emmy Rossum), it could be done on a stage but with enough nice visual flourishes to make it rather distinctive. It's essentially told in six scenes occurring at different times, intertwined. A decent watch, I enjoyed it. Directed by Emmy Rossum's husband, second movie in a few months that has been super low budget and directed by the spouse of the lead actress (the other being the excellent Faults).

The Immigrant - 3.5/5
Two Polish sisters in the 1920's travel across the Atlantic in persuit of the American dream. One of them diagnosed with tuberculosis is quarantined on Ellis Island, while the other on the streets of New York will do whatever it takes to survive and make sure her sister is taken care of. A very well made film that is let down a bit by the predictable melodramatical script.

In Fear - 4/5
Psychological horror film about a young couple in Ireland who get lost on their way to a hotel in the country.
An effective film whose sense of dread reminded me of The Blair Witch Project and Wolf Creek.

Forgetting the Girl - 2.5/5
A photographer is haunted by the drowning of his younger sister, which he witnessed as a child. No matter how he tries, he can't escape the psychological effects of the incident in his interactions with women. A film with lots of potential and some good moments that can't decide what it wants to be.
