Manchester By the Sea...just saw this with step mom. Wow! So affecting and sublime performances. Please give Casey Oscar now. Just terrific. So no frills, real people human drama that hardly seemed scripted. Devastating, but hope a great humor. 4.5 star.

Can't imagine how annoying the real life guy must be.

End of a Gun — Just when I thought Steven Seagal couldn't get any worse, he mumbles/whispers his lines and, as has been the case for the past 10-15 years, half-asses his fights, and even then, most of it is done by a stunt double in which the director deliberately frames it so the head couldn't be seen. On the plus side, Jade Ewan is hot

I like Rogan and enjoyed the first one for what it was. Should have trusted my better judgement and waited until this hit the $1 shelf.

very nice movie. syrupy sweet and the music is very manipulative, but overall it worked. could see why it wasn't a smash though. played it way safe and just this shy of corny.

Moana
Caught a late afternoon show today. Really enjoyed it. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was hilarious and I enjoyed the songs along with the stunning animation.
A solid B+ from me.

Nocturnal Animals - 4.5/5
A woman in a crumbling marriage receives a manuscript from her first husband whom she hasn't seen in almost 20 years. As she reads the story, a noirish violent tale of revenge, she starts to see similarities within the narrative to her failed first marriage. A well made film with Oscar caliber performances (Adams, Gyllenhaal and Shannon) that looks beautiful on the surface but beneath it is cold and ugly. One of the best of the year.

The Nice Guys - 1.5/5
In 1977 Los Angeles, a P.I. and an enforcer for hire team up to find a missing woman who was involved with pornographers and holds a secret that many people are willing to kill for. What a giant disappointment this was and the blame goes to the writing. So many bad jokes and a ridiculous storyline loaded with coincidences that tries to be socially concious. Why in the world didn't anyone tell Shane Black that making Ryan Gosling's daughter in the film a major character was a bad idea. Yep, The Nice Guys is actually a trio of two grown men and a 13-year-old girl whose supposed to represent innocence and the voice of reason in a world of sleaze and nihilism. If this was even half the movie that Inherent Vice is, it wouldn't be that bad, but unfortunately it's not.

Central Intelligence - 3.5/5 I certainly laughed at this movie a lot more than I thought I would. Great chemistry by all involved.

Suicide Squad: Extended Cut — Enjoyable if not messy action movie that I liked more for the characters than the plot, which had shades of X-Men to it, and certainly thinly written villains. Unlike the Batman vs. Superman: Ultimate Edition, this new cut doesn't do very much; not sure why it was even removed in the first place.

The Childhood of a Leader - 4/5
At the end of World War I an American politician moves with his family to France in order to assist with The Treaty of Versailles. While there his son starts to engage in sociopathic behavior as he does what he pleases and manipulates the adults around him. An interesting debut with a European art-house feel from actor turned writer/director Brady Corbet about the roots of evil and those who refuse to see it. Looking forward to what Corbet (whose worked with some interesting directors such as Lars Von Trier, Michael Haneke, Greg Araki, Olivier Assayas and Antonio Campos) does next.
