Re: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D (2012, some hack)
The original film is in my top 5 films, so of course out of morbid curiosity I'll see any entry in this series.
This, not surprisingly...looks terrible.
I still think Hooper's sequel to his original film, even though a complete tonal shift, is the 2nd best in the series.
And here are the rest in order of quality...
TTCM: The Beginning
TTCM (2003)
Leatherface: TTCM III
TTCM: The Next Generation
If this latest film can beat out The Next Generation, I'll consider it a roaring success.

It looks like every other modern horror reboot/remake/sequel. The usual group of attractive teenage walking cliches falls victim to the usual Saw/Hostel-like gore and violence. It would be awesome to see something original for once. And Trey Songz? Seriously???

FWIW, I think Leatherface is the 3rd best in the series, almost even with TCM 2. It's dark as hell, unremittingly brutal, and it's got Viggo. Great metal soundtrack, too.

That trailer does nothing for me, but kudos on the studio not spending a gillion dollars on making this. These type of movies don't need to be expensive to work, and the cheaper they are, the more likely they are to "risk" releasing R-rated horror movies, as they won't have to go so far to be profitable.
One early complaint I have is this doesn't look like it is set in the 70s at all. I don't know how you go about making the time setting believable, but House of the Devil did it in spades. Why can't this? Give those actors some retro hair cuts or something.

I won't blame you for not paying attention, but this takes place 40 years after the original.

I'll also chime in saying that I kind of liked the 2nd and 3rd movies in the franchise, while nowhere as good as the original, I thought they were better than most horror flick sequels. The third one suffers from obvious editing to water down the violence though. The latest movies were far too glossy; the best part of the original was the grittiness and sense of claustrophobia. Next Generation was just goofy and awful.

Which would make it damn near impossible for Leatherface to be the same brutal and relentless maniac he was in the original. He sure doesn't look 70 years old or so in the chase scenes. A bit of a continuity error on their part if you ask me. This should have been a sequel set shortly after the events of the first one but it is obvious that didn't happen.

I'm a bit confused, because I recall when this was announced it was to take place right after the first film.
According to it's wikipedia page this supposedly takes place right after the events of the first film.
But yeah it seems it could be contemporary. Who the fuck knows.

It is supposed to be a direct sequel to the original with Bill Moseley taking Jim Seidow's place (RIP) as the cook/dad. However, the way the movie looks is like it is spawned from the Platinum Dunes camp rather than from the Hooper/Henkel mindset.
