Picked this up on Blu and went to watch it last night but the disc was cracked down the middle.

Neither. We're talking about "The white man has stolen my land so I stick it to him in my casino tourist traps" Indians.

I know a lot of people here seem to love this and I am not trying to shit on anyone but WTF did I just see? This has to be one of the worst movies I have seen this year. Would knowing anything about the book/comic have helped at all? Maybe I just didn't get it but then again it didn't seem to be a really deep movie either...I thought I would be in a real treat when I poped this in on Saturday but I could barely get through it.

Didn't know squat about Scott Pilgrim before I saw the movies in theaters, and I loved every second of it.

Different strokes, it's all good. Silver Spoons was better though.

Nope, what you see if what you get. Though I don't know what there is to "get".

I didn't know much about it going in but enjoyed the hell out of it. You either accept the movie world they created or you don't -- don't try to figure out whats "really happening" (ie: "this is all in his head!" -- or at the very least just accept that you never see the real world, just the world through Scott's eyes) -- just go with what is happening. They run ads now comparing it to musical, but instead of musical numbers they break into fights. That isn't a terrible description.

It's extremely well made for what it is, if it works for you or not is a different thing entirely. But if you aren't into the outlandish and occasionally referential nature of it, you simply aren't its audience.

Also, the story isn't particularly deep, it's just boy meets girl through videogamer eyes.

My experience exactly. Noisy, entirely too self aware & utterly pointless. The supporting cast at least seemed like they could have somehow eked a decent movie out of this, but Micheal Cera just sank this movie for me. I can take him in certain roles, but a movie like this would have greatly benefited by having a lead actor who is able to at least change facial expressions.

Most of the actual game references were to two button games of the 80s (with exception of Pac-man which was more or less no button).

Though to your complaints, most people have the capacity to learn more than two buttons.

Cera is starting to wear thin, though he was well suited to this role.

Good concept and good execution. But I also don't like Cera in certain roles and this is one of them. I wouldn't say he completely ruined the movie for me but it turned what could have been very enjoyable to just decent.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Wright, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

I netflixed this earlier this week and thought it was great. I don't really remember any of the trailers but the film was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be. The editing, music, style, cast... it all worked for me. For those of you who didn't like it, what exactly were you expecting?

I also thought Cera was fine, but then again I can't think of a single role I've seen him in where he bothered me. I'll definitely be picking this one up on blu-ray in the future.

I really enjoyed it. Honestly though, I tend to like Cera but could have done without him in this. The rest of the cast was pretty great (especially his friends). I like Shwartzman as well, but didn't really like him as G. (I guess maybe they are just too familiar for me to accept as anybody but themselves, so if it's not a comedy built for them it doesn't feel right.)

You're just angry that you put so much time into being a rockstar and now kids can just buy the exact same experience for a couple hundred bucks.

Count me as one of the people who are "Michael Cera'd out..." BUT I really enjoyed Pilgrim and I really liked him in the role. I wasn't expecting much out of the movie but was pleasantly surprised.

The beginning reminded me of Shoot 'Em Up. If you don't buy into it in the first 10 minutes then the rest of the film isn't going to sway you one bit.

Not necessarily. I was kinda digging it at first but eventually it became excruciating to get through. What a mess of a film. Give em points for trying something...unique, but this just didn't work for me... disappointed I wasted a movie night on this.

I hated the first 10-20 minutes of Scott Pilgrim. Smug unlikable characters in a movie that was trying way too hard.

However, I ended up really liking the rest of the movie, and it's probably my favorite movie of this year.

The only part of the movie that I didn't "get" was the bollywood homage with the first evil ex. Loved the rest of the film, though.

it was in the book...that's the only scene in the film that i'm not crazy about especially when i'm showing the movie to someone who hasn't seen it. they basically give the same reaction stacey pilgrim gives.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Wright, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

Late to the party, but I watched this over the weekend and enjoyed it quite a bit.

In fact, I think this surpassed the graphic novels. For one, the plotting was tighter. But my biggest problem with the novels is that I had a very hard time distinguishing the characters...several were drawn alike. Obviously, with live action that's not a problem. I also thought that the video game aspects were better integrated in the film (whereas in the books they felt like more of an after-thought). Finally, I think a story that is primarily about bands and musicians work best in an audio/visual medium.

First book, right? I don't remember it playing out in the book as a "song" but I skimmed through that one pretty quickly.

Yes. Stacey's reaction perfectly matches what I thought the first time I saw it.
