Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Wright, 2010) — The Reviews Thread

I said it before and I'll say it again, if there's one movie you shouldn't judge based on it's ads, it's Scott Pilgrim. It's ads were shit-sandwiches, completely failing at getting across the tone and feel of the movie. I didn't care much for the books, and since the ads were crap, if it weren't for Edgar Wright's involvement, I would've steered clear of the movie too.

If you're basing your opinion of the movie off of the ads, you are wrong.

Because a tiny handful of us played and particularly loved that game. The reference isn't a joke. Your enjoyment or lack thereof of that nod (in the books or in the movie) doesn't impact the material. There's no arm-flailing "get the reference? get it? get it? get it?". There's no pause for applause or laughter. There's not even any indication that the name of the band is a reference to anything at all. It's just a quick, wholly unintrusive wink. Bryan Lee O'Malley had to call the band something, he's a video game-savvy guy, and a name like "Clash at Demonhead" fits with the way the band's presented...an I-went-to-art-school-and-take-myself-too-seriously sort of ring to it. That's all.

Not knowing that "Scott Pilgrim" is the title of a song by Plumtree doesn't have any material impact on the movie or the books. If you dug the song beforehand, maybe you'll have an extra bit of attachment, but it could just as easily be titled anything else and still work every bit as well. The same goes for Clash at Demonhead.

It is irrelevant, much like your opinion.

You are seriously asking for factual empirical evidence about why a movie is good. Why don't you just ask someone to prove that chocolate is the best flavor of ice cream.

I honestly disagree with this. The ads were exactly what the movie was, only the movie was of course much better. But I easily got the premise, the fun, the fights and the style from the ads.

I really don't know why people are bagging on them so badly.

Because the ads failed to capture any of the heart of the film, and may have had something to do with the films poor box office (in my opinion).

I think the film itself is the reason for the poor box office. It's so esoteric, it isn't even funny.

It was a chore. I'm not gonna rip this film to shreds but if I start looking at my watch to see how much of the film has passed then I know it's bad. It really dragged for me and felt a lot longer than the actual run time.

Okay, I'm confused. So only cranky old farts will dislike the humour and find no "heart" (whatever that is) in this and only snot nosed young punks wont appreciate the sheer brilliance of the references that should simultaneously enrich and have no bearing on the quality of the film?

Unless you are between the ages of 20-45 you are simply not qualified to form a legitimate opinion on this film. I thought that was common knowledge, Christ.

I loved this movie, but can see it having a more limited appeal, especially if you're not familiar with the video game genre.

Wait. I thought it was clearly established in this thread that you don't have to have ever played a videogame (or played with yourself) at any point in your life to enjoy this movie.

The absurd extremes people are going to in this thread (without having seen the movie) are making me

I think at this point we're just having zany fun. Might as well just roll with it and join in.

I wanted to have some fun. I think I would enjoy having some fun. But PixyJunket would pee in my Ovaltine.

That's why I buy Quik and Ovaltine and just switch the contents. That or I buy Bosco from time to time.
